Mei Lin cooks in her father's restaurant, but her father tells everyone the dishes are prepared by his lazy sons. When an emissary from the Emperor arrives and all the cooks in Chinatown are to prepare a feast for him, Mei Lin cooks a new dish for him in this cartoon directed by Yuan Zhang for the National Film Board of Canada.

Although this is a limited-animation short, the exquisite background and character design more than make up for that. It celebrates both Chinese culture and women, and so hits all the right notes for a 21st-century work, and it's about food, which means it pleases me. Definitely a pleasure to look at.

A beautiful story, inspired use of nuances and great portrait of truth. It reminds old fairy tales about the young daughter and her hidden talent. The animation is just beautiful, from the colors to moral and delicacy in fair doses.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a nice story about a female Chinese chef working in Chinatown. Sadly, her father instead of being proud of her sublime cooking, gives credit for this to his two lazy sons. However, this ruse becomes very apparent when they have a special guest and the sons are unable to do anything but make fools of themselves.

This is a film sponsored by the National Film Board of Canada and is totally unlike anything else I have seen from this government agency. Now I must admit I have only seen about 100 of their films, so perhaps there are other films like it and director Yuan Zhang may eventually go on to make other fine animated films like this, though ROSES SING ON NEW SNOW is the only credit I could find on IMDb for Yuan.

The best thing about the story is the lovely animation. It is very finely detailed but also looked very much inspired by Chinese drawings--perfect for such a film. Combining this with excellent music and an inspiring story all worked together to make this lovely short film.
