hot dog
wrlang24 December 2006
A Hot Dog Program is a PBS film about the hot dog in America. They introduce you to hot dogs and eateries all over the country, some nationally famous, some only locally famous. The film made me very hungry while I was watching it. If you don't like dogs, then you better not watch this, if you love dogs it's a must see. Some interesting ways of preparing dogs and some interesting way of eating dogs. Most come from the same factory, some from other places, but all in the USA. I'm going to have to look up some of these recipes and tag some places to stop on my travels. An interesting and well made documentary that makes your mouth water and gives you the urge to visit a dog stand.

Creating great nostalgia....about the lowly hot dog!
planktonrules18 September 2011
Here with "A Hot Dog Program", Rick Sebak investigates the history of the best Coney Island hot dogs as well as hot dogs around the nation. It's full of old photos, film, interviews and his nice narration. And, when it's all complete, you wish there was more! Sebak has a knack for making the must mundane things interesting in his quirky documentaries. After all, he was able to take cemeteries, old amusement parks and ice cream and turn each into a lengthy and yet compelling show! Think about it--ice cream or hot dogs as the subjects of documentaries! And, it sure helped that Sebak has a nice folksy sort of narration and gentle pacing that you can't help but enjoy. Deep? Probably not--but enjoyable.

A Simple Masterpiece
ReelCheese16 July 2006
It's been said that in the world of entertainment, sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. That's never been truer than in Rick Seback's "A Hot Dog Program." This masterful, fun documentary takes viewers on a cross-America tour of popular (and unusual) hot dog outlets. Along the way, he delves into the national obsession with the wiener-in-a-bun, including an interesting history into how our favorite bad-for-us treat came to be and, yes, how they are made. This PBS effort is a true slice of Americana, even for those who prefer hamburgers or burritos, and is highly recommended. Seback made an equally excellent documentary on ice cream.

an absolutely fun program

An absolutely entertaining program about the hot dog, and some of the most popular places in the US to get hot dogs. Written and produced by Rick Sebak for PBS, the same man that brought you An Ice Cream Program and Sandwiches That You Will Like, this is a fun program for all to watch, unless you're a vegetarian.

Watching this program makes me want to someday take a cross country trip to visit all of these establishments, especially my favorite, the place in New Jersey that serves deep-fried hot dogs. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go get a hot dog.

Definitely gets a 10/10.

i LOVE it!!!!!!!

it's funny about what the person before me said about taking a road trip because i feel exactly the same way!!! you may think it's sad, but i look forward to watching the hot dog program on the 4th of July just as much as i look forward to fireworks. like a fatty tradition of sorts. i just wish i had a hot dog to go along with my watching.

it's on KOCE every year, but i think i should have bought it by now considering the fact that i always wait for it to come on. i never knew hot dogs could come in so many different ways with so many different toppings. they have to be our national pastime food, for sure. so go watch this program, have a hot dog, and spread some peace.

WARNING: Do Not Watch This on an Empty Stomach
goleafs8421 May 2008
This is one of my favorite shows Rick Sebak has come out with.

It's great seeing the hot dog stands across the country, and hearing people's stories of the place, such as Pink's in Hollywood, with Ruth Buzzi talking about going there and "sneaking food", to who "Mory" and "Florie" are in Chicago, Gray's Papaya, which has been featured in a movies, as well as TV and Nathan's in New York City. It makes me want to go to those places and I liked seeing Nathan's annual Fourth of July Hot Dog eating contest.

In addition, I enjoyed seeing all the hot dog variations; From the slaw dog to the Chicago Dog, the Chilli dog, the origins of a corn dog and a hot dog where the wiener is deep fried. I haven't tried the latter, but after seeing a Chicago dog, it made me want to try one. I managed to find a place in Seattle that makes it and it was delicious. Now I need to go to Chicago and go for the real thing.

Word of warning though. If you watch this show on an empty stomach, you will get a craving for a hot dog or two. You may not be hungry and you may want one anyway.
