Bruce Springsteen has announced the release of Tracks II: The Lost Albums, a massive new collection containing seven previously unreleased albums recorded between 1983 and 2018.

Set for release on June 27th, Tracks II contains a total of 82 previously unreleased tracks, including 74 never-before-heard songs. Among the albums collected in the set are: LA Garage Sessions ’83, featuring songs recorded in the period he developed Born in the U.S.A.; Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, which includes material recorded alongside his Academy Award-winning title track to the 1993 film Philadelphia; Faithless, which was originally conceived for a film project; and a self-described “lost album” called Perfect World. The Makings of Curtis Mayfield is a bit of a misleading title for the oblique documentary directed by the Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician H.E.R. The name, a riff on Mayfield’s honeyed 1970 ballad “The Makings of You,” implies an intimacy with the subject and promises a detailed, if not necessarily comprehensive, introduction to the radical artist.

But H.E.R.’s film, which premiered at SXSW, doesn’t really offer any of that. The musician finds her own way to capture Mayfield, one that relies heavily on conversations with filmmakers, producers and fellow musicians. The path occasionally yields a fascinating insight — like when Jimmy Jam talks about how Mayfield was one of the first Black artists to own their master recordings — but more often it can feel a little too meandering and disjointed. Mayfield the person frequently gets lost in the mélange of testimonies.

When H.E.R. won an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Judas and the Black Messiah” in 2021, she used her acceptance to thank some of her biggest influences, including Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, and Curtis Mayfield. But when articles about her speech began popping up online, she noticed that Mayfield was the name that websites always cut from the headlines.

That experience convinced H.E.R. that Mayfield, a soul legend whose legacy spanned ’60s hits with The Impressions to a solo career that included the influential “Super Fly” soundtrack, hadn’t received the appropriate recognition from modern audiences. She attempts to rectify the problem with her directorial debut, “The Makings of Curtis Mayfield,” a documentary that sees her join an A-list roster of her musical idols to discuss Mayfield’s ongoing legacy.

As the film tells it, Mayfield was ahead of the curve on just about everything.

Off the back of a busy European Film Market, leading Spanish sales agent Latido Films has picked up Gracia Querejeta’s tenth feature, “The Good Luck,” screening in competition at this year’s Malaga Film Festival.

“The Good Luck,” based on leading Spanish novelist Rosa Montero’s title of the same name, turns on Pablo, who decides to get off the train at a seedy town and buy an old, run-down apartment across the tracks to begin a new life as if he weren’t the renowned architect he actually is. He might be running away from someone, or something, or even from himself. Everything in town seems to be stagnating except for Raluca, an optimistic woman open to any surprises that might change her life for the better. She’s decided to trust her luck, even if life hasn’t always been kind to her.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look feature film deal with George L. Tillman Jr. and Robert Teitel’s State Street Pictures.

The Bob Marley: One Love production company first inked a production pact with the studio in 2020. Tillman and Teitel’s film credits include The Hate U Give, the Barbershop franchise, Men of Honor, Soul Food and Notorious among others.

State Street Pictures’ executive suite also includes Robert Prinz, Head of Television, and Lawrence Mott, Head of Film.

We’re less than two weeks away from the return of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil in Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again – and he’s not the only member of Netflix’s Marvel-verse series due to make a comeback. Keke Palmer took home entertainer of the year and The Six Triple Eight won two awards, including best motion picture, at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards Saturday night.

The Tyler Perry-directed Netflix film also won for best actress in a motion picture, with a truly shocked Kerry Washington accepting that prize.

“You know how on awards shows when people look surprised, I never believed that they’re really surprised, until Beyoncé at the Grammys,” Washington said. “But I’m just shocked. I’m shocked. Because the women that I’m nominated with are so extraordinary. I love you all so much. I’m honored to be in a category with you.”

The 2025 NAACP Image Awards honored the best in Black excellence for the past year and we have the full list of winners!

The awards were given out across several nights with the main ceremony held on Saturday night (February 22) at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif.

The show, hosted by Deon Cole, aired live on CBS.

Keke Palmer won the Entertainer of the Year award and Outstanding Motion Picture went to The Six Triple Eight, with the film’s star Kerry Washington also taking home the Best Actress prize.

Yet another 20th century music icon is having their life story told in a new biopic as '60s pop star, Marianne Faithfull, will be the subject of a brand-new biopic by director Zaida Bergroth (Tove). As well as piling on to the increasingly popular musical biopic genre -- 2024 saw the release of A Complete Unknown, Bob Marley: One Love, Back to Black, Maria, and Better Man -- the new biopic also features some rising talent, as the stars of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Those About to Die are set to lead the new film. Musical biopics have become so regular in today's Hollywood landscape that movies are trying anything and everything to stand above the rest. Interestingly, in 2024, several musical biopics were released, such as Bob Marley's One Love, Back to Black and the Academy Award-nominated A Complete Unknown. Although technically a documentary with major artistic license, Pharell Williams' Piece by Piece told his professional and life story through the lens of LEGOs. It was an incredibly inspired and fascinating choice that interested audiences who weren't aware of how impactful Pharell Williams had been on the music industry. The movie went as far as to show real-life interviews and testimonials in Lego form, adding a beautifully colorful and nostalgic view to one of music's modern savants. Another movie that took an incredibly inspired chance in 2024 was the musical biopic of British superstar Robbie Williams: Better Man, where Williams is portrayed by a CGI monkey.

The second iteration of The Inclusion List from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023, adding to its initial class of 100 films by naming 50 new titles for the year 2023.

Four films from that year have made it into the Top 10 Most Inclusive Films for that timespan, according to the study released Wednesday, with A Thousand and One taking the No. 2 spot overall, Bottoms coming in seventh, The Color Purple ninth and The Blackening in 10th.

The list’s point system took into account talent both in front of and behind the camera, with a total of 20 points broken down into 10-point halves for both on-screen and off-screen inclusion. Two distinct processes were used, one for leads/co-leads and the other for all speaking characters. A film could earn up to 10 points for on-screen inclusion based on the five inclusion indicators across leads/co leads (up to 5 points) and all speaking characters (up to 5 points).

A Thousand and One ranks second with a score of 13.6/20, while Bottoms scores a 12.2/20. The Color Purple and The Blackening are tied with a score of 11.8/20. The highest scoring film on the list remains Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King (2022) with a 15/20.

The list also evaluated 2023 films displaying the best inclusivity across five categories: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability, and age. It named five of the most inclusive 2023 films within each of those categories.

The 2023 films that scored the highest for the gender indicator of inclusion were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. A Thousand and One also scored high on the race/ethnicity list alongside 2023’s Joy Ride, The Color Purple, The Blackening and House Party. In the LGBTQ+ category, the top five films of 2023 were All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, Bottoms, Knock at the Cabin and Saltburn. 2023 releases ranking high in the disability category included What Happens Later, John Wick: Chapter 4, Moving On, Golda and The Holdovers. Films from 2023 that scored highest in their representation of age on the big screen were Moving On, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Marlowe, The Miracle Club and Golda.

Researchers also took into consideration the race and ethnicity of crew members in the roles of director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, composer, production designer, costume designer, casting director and assistant director.

The second Inclusion List also names 25 top achievers across inclusion metrics and 50 new winners for 2023 cinema. Released Jan. 22, the results calls attention to directors, editors and distributors involved in projects with the highest percentage of women and people of color employees who aided in the process of production from start to finish line.

Out of 400 evaluated directors, five were named the most inclusive: Catherine Hardwicke, Olivia Wilde, Destin Daniel Cretton, Reinaldo Marcus Green and Kasi Lemmons.

Eight editors were noted for their work in film over the past five years, including Annette Davey, Anne McCabe, Blair McClendon, Catrin Hedström, Hilda Rasula, Harry Yoon, Mary Jo Markey.

The top distributors — companies responsible for bringing top-ranking diverse films to audiences — were listed by the quantity of how many films released: Universal (29), Sony Pictures (21), Warner Bros (18) and, for smaller distributors, A24 (14), MGM (10) and Bleecker Street (9).

Music biopics are hard to master. It is easy for music biopics to fall in conventional beats, showing classic scenes such as an artist's early work, big break, first big concert, and frictions with the industry. That said, 2024 had some promising entries in the genre. The year kicked off with Bob Marley: One Love, a Valentine's Day release that reinvigorated the box office after it got a disappointing start with flops with Argylle. One Love ended up making $180.8 million worldwide, an impressive haul for a biopic.

While One Love falls more on the conventional music biopic side, there are plenty of films that have been breaking the boundaries of the genre in recent years. Netflix’s The Piano Lesson scooped up a whopping 14 nominations to lead the way for the 56th NAACP Image Awards announced Tuesday, with Peacock’s limited series Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist topping the TV categories with nine bids. The five luminaries competing for the coveted Entertainer of the Year honor are Cynthia Erivo, Keke Palmer, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart, and sports-talk host Shannon Sharpe.

Based on August Wilson’s play, The Piano Lesson’s nominations include honors for Outstanding Motion Picture, director (Malcolm Washington) and actors John David Washington, Corey Hawkins, Samuel L. Jackson, and Danielle Deadwyler. In the top movied category, it’s joined by Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Bob Marley: One Love, Wicked, and The Six Triple Eight. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced on Monday the 207 feature films eligible for Best Picture consideration, two days before voting for the 2025 Oscar nominations begins.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the Academy Awards, but just 207 met the Best Picture competition eligibility requirements.

As stated by the Academy in a press release, “To be eligible for consideration in the general entry categories, under rules implemented for the 97th Academy Awards year, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.”

Bafta has unveiled the round two voting longlists for its 2024 film awards, with Emilia Perez leading the way with 15 spots followed by Conclave with 14.

Eighty films have been longlisted across 25 categories, including the new children’s and family film award – the first new category at the Bafta film awards for five years.

Millie-Jean Black is not TV’s typical leading detective. She’s not male. She’s not white. And she’s not pursuing cases in New York City or London.

Instead, it’s Kingston. And over the five-episode limited series Get Millie Black — a joint production for HBO and the U.K.’s Channel 4 produced by Motive Pictures, founded by former Channel 4 executive Simon Maxwell — both her life and Jamaica, the country of her birth and lineage, unfold on screen in ways previously shielded from the outside.

Created and executive produced by novelist Marlon James, who won the prestigious Man Booker Prize for his 2014 novel A Brief History of Seven Killings, a first for a Jamaican-born writer, Get Millie Black is not content with just solving crimes. Instead, the series strives to show both why Millie is compelled to solve crimes and why those crimes need to be solved in the first place.

Wicked has surged past the competition at the worldwide box office. The Wizard of Oz prequel, which was directed by Jon M. Chu, is adapted from the first act of the 2003 Broadway musical of the same name and stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, opposite Ariana Grande-Butera as Galinda, the future Glinda the Good Witch. The Wicked release debuted with a whopping $112.5 million, which was the third highest-grossing opening weekend of the year up to that point.

Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, the Wicked box office is projected to add $29 million in international markets by the end of its second weekend in theaters. With a cumulative international gross of $97 million and a domestic gross of roughly $262 million, the movie will have hit $359.3 million worldwide within just 10 days. It’s a good year for the musically inclined. This awards season is full of actors who sing. Alongside having a fantastic opening theme song, Sweetpea is full of great music that helps give the show a memorable tone, adding to its quality. The balance between comedy and drama can be hard to get right, but Sweetpea's exciting cast of characters helps bring a light-hearted feel to the British drama, while Ella Purnell's Rhiannon Lewis brings some sinister vibes. Despite developing murderous tendencies, Rhiannon maintains her endearing traits, creating a twistedly complicated protagonist. However, these qualities are what makes Sweetpea's reviews so good and the show's excellent soundtrack compliments the action and humorous moments perfectly.

While the series is filled predominately with pop music, the songs are used in a clever way that often conveys an intense and even unsettling atmosphere on occasion. Sweetpea episodes 1 and 2 use these catchy tracks to help build an identity, treating the audience to some bangers in the process.

Actors transforming into famous figures for biopics isn’t exactly a new phenomenon. In recent years, we’ve seen Marisa Abela’s Amy Winehouse in Back To Black, Kingsley Ben-Adir’s Bob Marley in One Love, Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein in Maestro, and Sebastian Stan’s Donald J. Trump in The Apprentice. But just when the market for such movies may have been running the risk of getting overcrowded, along comes Waltzing With Brando to make us an offer we can’t refuse. That offer? Titanic actor Billy Zane going absolutely all-in to play Marlon Brando in a comedy about The Godfather legend’s efforts to create a sustainable pocket of paradise on a tiny Tahitian island. The modern obsession with the 1980s and the love of biopics, and particularly biopics about musicians, collides in this latest project from TriStar Pictures. As revealed by Deadline, the next music icon getting the biopic treatment is '80s icon Boy George. The announcement reveals that J.C. Lee is set to write the screenplay for TriStar Pictures project. Lee is best known for co-writing the 2019 drama Luce, the film adaptation of the Lee's own play.

On television, he has credits which include ABC's How To Get Away With Murder, Apple's The Morning Show, and HBO's Looking and Girls. He also has extensive experience in theater, and has recently worked on To My Girls, Relevance, and Warplay. This year has seen the release of Back to Black, which told the story of Amy Winehouse. And this Christmas will see the premiere of A Complete Unknown, which brings James Mangold back to the music world with Timothée Chalamet occupying the shoes of Bob Dylan. Deadline is now reporting that a Boy George biopic is now in development over at TriStar. It’s still in the early stages, but the movie is set to be written by scribe J.C. Lee, who co-wrote the film adaptation of his own play Luce.

Films like "Bob Marley: One Love" and "Young Woman and the Sea" offer intriguing glimpses into real-life events. "Robot Dreams" and "Challengers" showcase diverse storytelling styles and captivating character studies in the drama genre.

In the wake of 2023's dual Hollywood strikes, there's no denying that it is a difficult time for the movie industry. Films continue to fall short of box-office expectations, even when they hail from previously acclaimed franchises (i.e. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga) or received universal raves. Nonetheless, there have been solid releases, especially where drama movies are concerned. On the horizon are movies about Bob Dylan (A Complete Unknown with Timothee Chalamet), Michael Jackson (Michael with Jaafar Jackson), Shirley Chisolm (Shirley with Regina King), and many others.

Biographical pictures can be a vehicle to introduce a star from the past to the younger set, a la Elvis and then Priscilla. Or to bring a lesser-known historical figure like Oppenheimer to the forefront of our consciousness.

Other times, rather than being educational, a biopic can sensationalize a tragedy or scandal, which could leave a bad taste in the mouths of fans. This was the case with the Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson miniseries.
