Return to Sleepaway Camp is a horror movie that is a direct sequel to the 1983 cult classic Sleepaway Camp. The story occurs at Camp Manabe, a summer camp where mysterious and gruesome murders occur.
Return to Sleepaway Camp is a movie that not only misses the mark but shamelessly crosses the line of good taste and decency. It attempts to blend horror and comedy but ultimately fails by presenting a disturbing narrative that revolves around the bullying of a child. This misguided attempt at humor is not only tasteless but also highlights a lack of sensitivity toward the genuine issue of bullying.
The movie follows the experiences of a young, socially awkward teenager named Alan, who becomes the target of bullying from the entire camp for being a bully himself.
As the campers and staff members fall victim to an unknown killer, Alan finds himself caught in a web of suspicion, abuse, and fear. The movie explores themes of bullying, revenge, and the dark secrets that haunt the camp.
One of the most concerning aspects of this movie is how it encourages the audience to laugh at the suffering of a child. The one-hit wonder and producer, director, and writer of this movie, Robert Hiltzik, seemed to have forgotten that bullying is a grave matter that should never be trivialized or used as a punchline. By attempting to find humor in such a dark theme, Return to Sleepaway Camp not only fails to entertain but also disrespects the victims of abuse. Even though Alan was a bully, it was not okay for others to bully him. Ultimately, Return to Sleepaway Camp is a prime example of how two wrongs do not make a right.
Attempting to combine bullying and comedy is an ill-conceived idea that results in a movie that is both profoundly unsettling and morally reprehensible. It fails to entertain, educate, or provide any semblance of artistic value. Return to Sleepaway Camp is a misguided and offensive attempt that should be avoided by those seeking responsible and thoughtful cinema.
