A blue-and-white Oreo bag carved into the side of a head; a purple, four-foot-high "Elvira"-style beehive; and the Guinness World Record holder for the world's longest dreadlocks. Good Hair, Good Humour, Good Questions
In “Good Hair” (Jeff Stilson, 2009) Chris Rock offers an initiation into the world of African-American women’s hairstyling. I was immediately excited by this winning combination of a much-loved comedian and a much neglected topic.

The film gets off to a less-than-promising start, from which it quickly recovers. A rather choppy opening collage of interviews with black actresses and musicians gradually coalesces into a definition: ‘good hair’ is non-African hair, hair which is soft, smooth and bouncy. Many black women are more than willing to put their health and their finances at risk for the sake of ‘good hair’. Most of the film is devoted to explaining how and why this takes place, and it makes for a largely fascinating 90 minutes. The hazardous method for straightening hair is to use chemical ‘relaxers’, which some women will apply to their daughters’ hair as early as age 2. If not used with great care,...

Oscars Preview: Best Supporting Actress
We take a look at Anna Kendrick, Mo'Nique, Maggie Gyllenhaal and other nominees before Sunday's show.

By Larry Carroll

Anna Kendrick

Your grandparents used to be fond of saying that behind every great man stands a great woman. Such a phrase might seem sexist these days, but when it comes to one pivotal Academy Awards category, something still holds true: Behind some of the greatest performances of the year stands an accomplished woman.

It's doubtful that Jeff Bridges would be racking up all those awards-season trophies if his "Crazy Heart" performance hadn't been paired with Maggie Gyllenhaal's tender, heartbreaking work. George Clooney would have been nothing but eye candy if the pivotal supporting roles in "Up in the Air" had been given to less talented actresses than Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga. With this in mind — and the big ceremony on Sunday — here's our...

[DVD Review] Good Hair
Even if Good Hair has its faults, it deserves credit for heightening awareness of a situation bubbling up in African-American culture: the hair industry. The documentary works hard to hammer home the unfortunate truths about how the modern standards of beauty require all women to conform to a straight-haired style, which for African-American women involves a chemical which essentially robs their hair of proteins and has the potential to eat through their scalp if left in for too long. It’s a journey that starts with an innocent question from Chris Rock’s daughter and spirals into the actor’s quest to lay bare the reality of the burgeoning African-American haircare industry and the growing trend of weaves. As informative as it is entertaining, Good Hair suffers from a lack of an overarching goal, attempting to create one out of an otherwise unrelated sub-plot consisting of a hair styling...

Good Hair Review
Before Good Hair, my only exposure to weaves was when a girl fight ended in hair ripped from a belligerent head and with me standing nearby wondering what just happened. Admittedly ignorant on the subject, I was surprisingly engaged by this documentary’s informative interviews and good-natured charm that entertains regardless of gender or race.

Director Jeff Stilson takes a subject as simple as hair and expands it into a frequently funny discussion about culture, fashion, and obsession while following comedian Chris Rock’s comical quest for knowledge.

Rock has directed a couple narrative films starring himself, but this time he executive produces, hosts, and narrates a comprehensive examination of African-American style; from the roots of attraction to the frayed edges of competitive cutting. Curious after his 5-year-old’s questions about “good hair,” he travels the country to salons, barbershops, and conventions educating himself about women’s hair while a...

Chris Rock's Daughter Inspired New Documentary 'Good Hair'
Comedian interviews black celebrities to get behind the obsession with hair.

By Steven Roberts

Chris Rock and Nia Long

Photo: MTV News

Chris Rock is never one to shy away from pushing the boundaries of racial discussion in America. His HBO stand-up specials "Bring the Pain" and "Bigger and Blacker" are a testament to that. In his new documentary, "Good Hair," Rock continues to do so, all the while trying to answer his daughter's question: "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?"

"One day, I was in the car with my daughter and her little girlfriend, who happened to be white, and she was raving about her girlfriend's hair, and she used the words 'good hair' to describe it, and it kind of made me jump a little bit," Rock said.

The film deals with African-American women's obsession with their hair, which ultimately sheds a light on their own images of beauty.

(Almost) Everybody Loves Chris Rock
When Chris Rock's young daughter asked him one day why she didn't have "good hair," the comedian extraordinaire began thinking about the issues surrounding African-American women and their tresses -- or rather, their painstakingly and expensively straightened or even artificial hair. Directed by Rock's Emmy-winning collaborator Jeff Stilson ("The Chris Rock Show"), the hilarious and occasionally horrifying new doc "Good Hair" investigates beauty salon culture and the lengths black women go to for the sake of self-esteem and societal pressures.

Rock himself acts as our guide, interviewing scientists about the toxicity of sodium hydroxide relaxers, schoolteachers and other working-class people who overspend on weaves (hair that comes from heads in India, another stop on Rock's journey), and celebrities like Ice-t, Maya Angelou and the man who modeled his mane after his buddy James Brown's: Reverend Al Sharpton. Framing the whole investigation is a stop in Atlanta for the Bronner Bros.

Chris Rock's New Trailer For His Documentary Film
If you remember we reported several months ago comedic actor Chris Rock is taking a new venture- a new film titled Good Hair, to the big screen. Looks like Rock finally finished his documentary that examines the cultural pressures that forces black women into expensive, often painful methods to care for their hair. Rock said he first got the idea to explore the subject during a tour stop in Atlanta in the mid-1990s, when he came across a glitzy convention for black stylists known as the Bronner Brothers Hair Show.

The film follows Rock from the Bronner brothers show to neighborhood salons, businesses dealing in hair-care products and the streets of India, where the hair weave industry is rooted.

Rock recently screened the film at the Sundance Film Festival where it was received with an enthusiastic reception, bolstering his hopes that it can find a broad audience. Good Hair...

Ice Cube
Barbershop 2
Ice Cube
Opens

Friday, Feb. 6

An appealing cast inhabits well-defined characters with warmth and ease in this reunion of the Barbershop staff. Exec producing this time, Ice Cube reprises his turn as good-guy straight man to a winning comedy ensemble, while Cedric the Entertainer steps into an expanded role as the memorably opinionated, "semiretired" barber Eddie. Again pitting the beloved neighborhood institution against unwholesome business interests, Barbershop 2: Back in Business has a rollicking time reaching its foreseeable conclusion. With the built-in draw of an established concept and the addition of Queen Latifah, the film should have the legs to surpass its predecessor's take of $75 million.

The script by Don D. Scott, one of the 2002 hit's three writers, is more earthbound than the first installment. In place of painfully dumb thieves and unbelievable police raids is a bit of social context. Chicago itself is more of a presence, from its elevated trains to its late-'60s turmoil. Opening with a slice of back story from 1967 that shows how Eddie first arrived at the South Side barbershop, the film jumps into present-day action with his rant about biracial public figures and the D.C. snipers.

Given the controversy the first film stirred up with its skewering of civil rights icons, the comments this time around don't have quite the same shock value. As funny as Eddie's contrarian attitudes can be -- especially in Cedric's inimitable delivery -- there's a sense in the early going that the film is trying too hard, in its good-natured way, to offend. Once director Kevin Rodney Sullivan (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) relaxes into the story, though, the rants become an integral part of the nonstop kibitzing.

Having withstood money troubles and loan-shark maneuvers in the first film, Calvin (Ice Cube) finds his shop targeted by a cigar-chomping developer (Harry Lennix) who's installing Chicago's first branch of the Nappy Cutz chain directly across the street. Boasting such amenities as titanium clippers, leather smocks and flat-screen TVs, not to mention room to play hoops, the new haircut emporium gives Calvin ample reason to worry. Go-getter Jimmy Sean Patrick Thomas), who has left barbering for politics -- Eddie calls him West Wing -- tries to help Calvin save his business, appealing to his verbiage-spouting boss, Alderman Brown (Robert Wisdom).

As they navigate personality clashes and other tensions, Calvin's haircutters remain more or less united, especially against Calvin's fresh-from-barber-school cousin (SNL's Kenan Thompson), who they wordlessly agree is an annoyance and a fool. Isaac (Troy Garity), the sole white barber, is more convinced than ever of his haircutting super-talents, and Nigerian immigrant Dinka Leonard Earl Howze) still harbors a crush on take-no-prisoners Terri (Eve), who's catching everyone off-guard with her serenity-now enlightenment -- she's even willing to share her apple juice. Ex-con Ricky (Michael Ealy) is still secretive and enigmatic when Terri discovers what he's been up to, she uncovers another surprise in the process.

Introducing the role she'll play in the upcoming spinoff Beauty Shop, Queen Latifah makes an impression as Gina, an ex-girlfriend of Calvin's and a stylist at the women's salon next door -- where things really get raunchy. Gina and Eddie face off in a rousing bout of insult comedy that's one of the film's best scenes, not only for the laughs but for the underlying affection.

Colorful, witty production and costume design heighten the spirited proceedings, and cinematographer Tom Priestley effectively uses black-and-white and desaturated color in flashback sequences. Helmer Sullivan keeps it all moving at a lively pace. Despite the predictable story arc, he and writer Scott generally avoid plot tidiness, letting strands unwind and overlap, propelled by the terrific actors.

Mark Brown
'Beauty' of a suit filed by MGM
Mark Brown
Two competing movies titled Beauty Shop have led MGM to file a copyright infringement and breach of contract suit against writer-director Mark Brown. Brown is one of the creators of MGM's Barbershop franchise, which is set to spin off a movie called Beauty Shop, but Brown already is in preproduction with an indie project of his own, also called Beauty Shop and set in a black-run beauty parlor. The suit, filed Nov. 7 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, seeks injunctive relief to prohibit Brown from developing his competing Beauty Shop into a film as well as unspecified damages. It names Brown, Beauty Shop Llc., Brown's Renegade Pictures and C4 Pictures as defendants. Brown received screenplay and producer credit on the original Barbershop and is an executive producer on the upcoming Barbershop 2. MGM's suit claims that he is "developing, producing and marketing a screenplay and motion picture entitled 'Beauty Shop' that is competitive with, and highly similar to, the films in MGM's 'Barbershop' motion picture franchise with full knowledge of MGM's prior use and exclusive rights in the 'Barbershop' (trademarks)."...
