‘Tis the season for all streaming platforms to embrace horror on a massive scale, making the options endless for your Halloween watchlists. We’re breaking down this month’s streaming highlights by platform. While Prime Video may not deck the halls for horror’s sacred holiday like Hulu, it does bring some notable gems worth checking out this Halloween.
Here are eight newly added horror movies you won’t want to miss on Prime Video in October 2023.
Bubba Ho-Tep
Don Coscarelli takes a creative approach to addressing the sluggish nature of standard ancient mummies; he unleashes the monster upon a pool of potential victims too feeble to outrun it. Bruce Campbell stars as an aged man claiming to be the still-living Elvis Presley. When a reanimated mummy in cowboy gear starts feeding off the residents in Presley’s nursing home, he teams up with John F. “Jack” Kennedy, who uses a wheelchair,...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Bounce tells the story of a teenage girl who wishes she could trade her family for a new one on Christmas Eve. Josann McGibbon, the writer and EP on Disney Channel’s Descendants franchise, and the scribe on such movies as Runaway Bride, Three Men and a Little Lady and the Co-ep of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, is adapting Shull’s novel.

Two-time Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo solidified himself as an industry powerhouse after turning in a jaw-dropping performance as the revered Martin Luther King, Jr. in Ava DuVernay‘s masterpiece “Selma.” His portrayal introduced the world to his breadth of roles, which includes over two decades of complex character work, often excelling in the grey area of his characters’ moral ambiguity.
Oyelowo’s latest film is “Don’t Let Go,” the Blumhouse-produced, Jacob Estes (“Mean Creek“)-written-and-directed sci-fi thriller.

There was a moment back in 2008 that casual science enthusiasts might remember, just before the Large Hadron Collider was first activated, when armchair observers experienced a frisson of semi-superstitious worry. The nuclear research device, after all, was specifically designed not just to discover the unknown but to create the conditions under which to examine it, and no amount of rational thinking could entirely obliterate an abstract uneasiness that maybe we were going too far, that some cosmic catastrophe might ensue: our collective lizard-brain instinct of “what if?” It’s that unfounded, unspoken anxiety that Blaise Harrison’s debut feature “Particles” evokes so well that it threatens to obliterate the very slight coming-of-age story it adorns.
Set with clever specificity in a small French town on the Franco-Swiss border, below which the Cern Large Hadron Collider goes about its borderline-mystical physics, the film follows a group of local teenagers, in particular Pierre-Andre (Thomas Daloz) or P.

In “Relive,” David Oyelowo plays an Lapd detective who gets a call from the cell phone of a teenage girl whose body he discovered shot dead in her bathtub just hours before. The victim was his niece, Ashley (Storm Reid), and so the cop can’t believe his ears when he hears her voice on the other end of the line. Except Ashley is still dead. Turns out the call — not a recording, but an actual conversation — is coming from four days earlier, which means he has a chance to alter the past, and save her life.
On paper, that sounds like a compelling premise for a supernaturally tinged crime movie, as well as a possible comeback project for writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes, who could use a do-over more than most in Hollywood these days. Estes’ career started strong 15 years ago when his first film, “Mean Creek,” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.

Jacob Estes could be making it a Sundance trifecta with Mean Creek (2004) and The Details (2011) being joined Only You – a horror, sci-fi, thriller that is without details in terms of plot or release dates. Starring Storm Reid, Mykelti Williamson and David Oyelowo, production took place in July of 2017 with Jason Blum backing the project. Knowing the Blumhouse – they’ll want to let this cat out of the bag with a bang, and a Sundance preem a la Get Out would do the trick.

Susan Johnson, noted indie filmmaker and director of the Netflix social media sensation “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” has signed with CAA and Management 360.

Back in my video shop days (I have mentioned that before right?) I used to love finding hidden gems. You know, the movies that you never saw a trailer for, never saw them near the cinema they just kind of arrived in your local video shop and you were immediately drawn to them. Some examples off the top of my head could be the likes of Mean Creek, Donnie Darko, Napolean Dynamite, Bubba Ho Tep or any number of others. The thing that always got me into them was the unassuming box cover and that one actor that made you go “Oooooh I like him”.
Entanglement struck me as one of those movies that, while looking hugely unassuming, was going to surprise the crap out of me.

Kevin Phillips’ feature directorial debut is a knock-out. There’s no other way to put it, really. Comparison is being made by many to Stand By Me, but I think it’s closer to Jacob Estes’ 2004 thriller Mean Creek. To talk about either film, the same spoiler is unavoidable: a bully dies, accidentally, and the rest of the film is how the characters deal with it. Where the two films depart is that fallout and the tone therein. Mean Creek handles how the guilt can consume you, and while Super Dark Times absolutely deals with that, the manifestation of it is drastically different. It’s strange, occasionally comedic, and always intriguing.

It was back in 2014 that we wroted about director Jeremy Breslau's striking short film 1982 and now Breslau is back with an euqally strong piece of work. Bailey Chase (Batman v Superman), Hayley McFarland (The Conjuring) and Trevor Morgan (Mean Creek) star in The Chaplain, the dark tale of a former army chaplain trying to free his daughter from her occultist boyfriend. And possibly something else. It's a solid, solid piece of work and with the filmmakers opting to forgo the festival circuit entirely and instead bring it straight to audiences online you can watch it in its entirety below right now!...

Watch an exclusive clip from the film featuring Sid (Justin Chon) and Grace (Jessika Van) share a sweet moment in front of a Buddha statue.

Set to release on Sept. 2 from Image Comics is Jeff Lemire and Emi Lenox’s Plutona, a miniseries about a rag-tag group of five kids who bump into the dead body of a famous superhero.
“The book isn’t so much about the superhero as it is the kids who find her. It’s about how this discovery, and the decision they make, starts to affect their lives and their friendship,” said writer Lemire via email interview. “It’s a very grounded story told from these kids’ point of view.”
Lemire isn’t new to superheroes, stories focused on kids, or original creator-owned work. He has worked on books like Animal Man and Justice League United for DC Comics, Sweet Tooth for DC Comics’ Vertigo line, and Descender, an ongoing comic for Image Comics that was picked up by Sony for an upcoming film adaptation.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Rory Culkin has quietly but steadily been carving out an interesting movie career. Teen movies are like buses, only more so: you wait forever for one and then 300 come along at once. In 1995, following a lengthy dry spell, the teen genre was spectacularly reborn in a blaze of weird and wonderful movies that spoke to teenagers head-on and took pleasure in rejecting received notions of adolescence on screen. The triple threat of Clueless, Empire Records and Mallrats gave rise to a decade of unparalleled production that spawned teen movies of every shape and size, from Mean Girls to Mean Creek; Scream to Spider-Man.

Ever since memorably appearing as Mel Gibson's son in M. Night Shyamalan's 2002 hit "Signs," Rory Culkin has shied away from big projects, favoring indies with roles he can sink his teeth into. He had a great run as a teen actor, impressing in "Mean Creek," "Down in the Valley" and "Lymelife." Now 24, Culkin shows he has what it takes to lead a film in Lou Howe's assured feature film debut "Gabriel" (currently screening at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival). In "Gabriel," Culkin stars as the titular character, a young man struggling with mental issues in the wake of his father's suicide. It's a performance that Indiewire's Eric Kohn praised as Culkin's "best." "Appearing in every scene," Kohn wrote, "the actor imbues Gabriel with a wily attitude; while recovering from a meltdown that precedes the start of the story, he's always on the brink of another one." Indiewire sat...

When we first see Rory Culkin in the opening minutes of "Gabriel," the feature-length debut of Lou Howe, there's an alarming uneasiness to his presence. The actor's jittery brown-green eyes suggest a paradoxical state at once fully alert and lost in another world. Culkin remains that way for the duration of the movie, which finds the title character struggling with mental health issues in the wake of his father's suicide and pining for the affections of a long-lost childhood love. He's angry with the reality of his conditions while seemingly in denial of the fantasy he uses to escape from them. No matter the melodramatic trappings of the material, Culkin's fierce performance elevates the experience. Every since 2004's "Mean Creek," Culkin has shown a penchant for dark, brooding roles, and "Gabriel" provides him with plenty of room to flesh out that potential. Appearing in every scene, the actor imbues Gabriel...

This Friday sees the release of The Kings of Summer, one of our favorite movies out of Sundance this year (where it was titled Toy's House) and also one of the best coming-of-age movies in years. It's hilarious, heartfelt and involves a summertime story that's up there with Stand by Me, The Sandlot and Moonrise Kingdom as an immediate classic for the seasonal subgenre. And the film's director, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, certainly knows the body of work he's following. To get the gig he even made a short "tone reel" comprised of clips from such great movies as Stand by Me, Superbad, Mean Creek, Son of Rambow, Millions, The Wackness, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and many others. Fortunately he was very successful in adding something familiar yet highly...

I wish I knew just what the heck writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes thought he was up to with this mealy, wan attempt at a black comedy. His debut 2004 film Mean Creek -- most definitely not a comedy -- was an emotionally ruthless, brutally observed look at the stark cruelty of children, but in this oddest of followups, the petty selfishness of grownups, the ostensible target of his would-be skewering, gets off so easy that by the time this suburban round-robin of lies, infidelity, lawn care, and unintended consequences has wound down, you’ll wonder why it was wound up at all. Tobey Maguire (Brothers) is Jeff, a Seattle-area doctor with a nice wife (Elizabeth Banks: What to Expect When You’re Expecting), a nice house, and a nice life... all of which he is doing his very best to flush down the toilet. Nearly everyone he knows -- including...

The devil is in "The Details," but only in that this smug and airless comedy feels like 91 minutes in hell. The first few minutes promise a Rube Goldberg whirligig of bad behavior, unhappy coincidences and plain old rotten luck, but all writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes ("Mean Creek") can deliver is a group of jerks acting like jerks. If there were any recognizable human beings on screen, this might have delivered the sort of squirmy, uncomfortable laughs that have sustained "Curb Your Enthusiasm" through multiple seasons, but the perpetrators and victims...

“The Details” is one of those dark comedies where everything that can go wrong does. The sophomore film from Jacob Aaron Estes, whose previous film “Mean Creek” won the John Cassavetes Award at Sundance in 2004, was the biggest sale of the 2011, purchased by The Weinstein Company for $8 million. Of the dozen movies this writer saw while he was at the fest, it was one of the more accessible, but didn’t exactly ring of “Little Miss Sunshine”-like success either. The film stars Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks as Jeff and Nealy Lang, young parents who have hit a rough patch in their marriage. Jeff is a doctor, Nealy is an interior decorator and while it’s probably neither’s fault, the passion has clearly gone out of their relationship, the image of the happy suburban couple is immediately shattered by a screaming match between the couple during the opening credits.
