Good parts, but unsatisfying overall

I gave this a vote of 6, which is the lowest of the votes so far, so I guess I'd better justify it. This is a hybrid of the combat mecha action anime and the high school romantic drama anime. Similar hybrids have done well in the past, but this one doesn't quite work. It has some good episodes, likable characters, exciting action scenes in the first half, and a righteous theme song, but overall, I just can't give this a high vote.

The setting is interesting, with Japan being the last part of Earth not overrun by alien(?) invaders, and the government having to draft high school students to fight. The anime focuses on one high school class, which mixes school work and classes with being on alert and having to fight off Genju attacks. The first half balances the two genres pretty well, but the second is firmly set in romantic drama. The boy and the girl eventually get together, but the larger conflict against the Genju is never resolved. We never find out where they came from, why they started attacking, or much of anything else about them. For example, we see an interesting tactic in the first episode that the Genju invaders use to defeat a human counter-attack. They apparently take control of one of the Japanese helicopters and then use it to destroy the main force. It's never explained how the Genju could do this, and then it's never seen again in any other battles. In addition, there are tantalizing hints about halfway through the series that the appearance of the invaders is connected to the conflict of WWII. This is never followed up on either. The whole romantic angle is fine, but it just isn't satisfying by itself when the fight for humanity's existence is left by the wayside.

To be fair, while I'm a fan of both genres, I prefer mecha action to romantic comedy drama, so I do have a little bias. But overall I found this somewhat disappointing. If you're an anime fan, I recommend renting the first two discs, and if you really want to see the boy and girl get together, then go ahead and see the third, just don't expect much beyond that.

Aaron Sorkin goes anime

Well, kind of... If you have seen West Wing or Sports Night you'll fell right at home with this wonderful miniseries.

Instead of the White house or a TV Show, here we go behind the scenes of a Typical "mecha" squadron, with all the comedy, drama and romance that it involves.

The characters are mostly wonderful, the story is charming and it masterfully blends romantic comedy and drama, while avoiding to emphasize on the battle scenes or the threat against humanity.

Great show. I'm really happy that I bought this. I only hope another season it's on the way.

A wonderful little, over looked program.

Warning: Spoilers
Gunparade March is a lovely little program which seems to have gone unnoticed by large. Whether by poor distribution or almost no advertising. But it doesn't change the fact, this a wonderfully low key, people driven show that needs to be seen. The program centres around a group of young Japanese students who have been recruited by their country to be part of a defence force against a mysterious alien enemy and 2 students in particular. Hayami Atsushi is the average, slightly goofy young man who is teamed up with the introverted, intense but talented transfer student Shibamura Mai to pilot a new and improved model of the project's mecha. The series focuses largely on the students and their lives rather than the day to day fighting of aliens and looks at the flip side of life away from the action, the consequences and the emotional effects of the young people involved. With a few nods to films such as Aliens and Starship Troopers plus other anime programs like Full Metal Panic! and Martian Successor Nadesico that crept up before it, this series has a fusion of romance, comedy, action and despair to keep you hooked to the last episode. (From Mai's secret of her heart to the death of a colleague or to the adventures of The Unlucky girl!) Whilst fan's of deeper or more action based anime such as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Z.O.E, Guyver or Detonator Orgun may find the slow pace boring, the more grown up crowd may thoroughly enjoy this series. As I did. The characters are wonderfully diverse, the music also and the action handled with precision and style. It proved to be a wonderful surprise and one that I recommend highly. Even if the series is all too brief. 8/10!!
