- Philly Boy tells the true story of MC Breeze aka Joey B Ellis, a self made, independent recording artist, who started making records with money earned from a Domino's Pizza job in 1985. His record Discombobulatorbubalator went on to be the first hip hop record banned from radio because of its strong language and subject matter. This ban led to the record becoming extremely popular among Hip Hop fans of the era, and has held its own as a Hip Hop classic to this day. The story includes interviews with various artists discussing Breeze's impact and influence as a Hip Hop pioneer.
Philly Boy mostly covers MC Breeze's independent career prior to meeting MC Hammer. When Breeze met MC Hammer, Hammer had not yet released his first record. Breeze and Hammer were at a musical event in New York called the New Music Seminar in which Breeze battled MC Just Ice and won. MC Breeze was at the event to thwart the release of a Def Jam recording artist that also went under the name "Breeze". MC Breeze later signed a record deal with MC Hammer's label, Bust It Records, which was distributed by Capitol records. In 1990 he recorded 3 songs for the Rocky V movie soundtrack, which led to two music videos for the songs Go For It and Thought You Were The One For Me. Millions of records were sold, the singles charted high and led to a world tour through Europe, Japan and the Netherlands. This all came to an abrupt end after MC Hammer became jealous of MC Breeze's quick success and released him from the label, saying it was for personal reasons. The film also discusses some personal points Breeze's life, to include when one of his brothers was hit in the head and brain damaged, as well as how his other brother was shot and killed in his own home in 1996.
Philly Boy covers the adversity of an unsung Hip Hop pioneer.
