It’s been an exciting time for scary movies, with everything from “Get Out” to “It” turning 2017 into the biggest year for horror box office receipts on record. With $733 million and counting, according to Box Office Mojo, it’s never been a better time for the genre. Diehard fans also took note of a momentous new gathering for likeminded souls — The Overlook Film Festival, an exclusive new horror film festival that took place within the confines of the Timberline Lodge in Mount Hood, Oregon. The intimate enclosure — where Stanley Kubrick shot some of the exteriors for “The Shining” — provided a platform for the world premieres of the Blumhouse production “Stephanie” and A24’s “It Comes at Night,” in addition to live performances, interactive gaming and panel discussions, threaded together with the enthusiasm of a crowd eager to celebrate all things terrifying and spooky.
Now, The Overlook is on the move.

As you may have noticed, tomorrow is Halloween. To celebrate, “Tales From Beyond the Pale” is celebrating with a listening party in New York for Season IV’s final two episodes: “Conviction” and “The Vampire Party.” Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid, the horror podcast’s co-creators, shared a few thoughts on the stories’ conceptions — and what comes next for “Tales.”

There’s a reason you were always warned not to let the bed bugs bite. As insidious as they are disgusting, the tiny creatures leave their mark — even in audio form. “The Mattress King,” one of two new episodes of Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid’s “Tales From Beyond the Pale” premiering this week, serves as a potent reminder of that all-too-timely fact.
Written by Clay McLeod Chapman, the 30-minute narrative is joined by Douglas Buck’s “Hidden Records.” Kevin Cline, Tony Todd, Susan Corbett, Alexandre Lazarre, and Esinam Beckley lend their voices to the latter story, which tells of a wayward teenager whose record collection includes an LP that links the worlds of the living and the dead — namely the boy’s departed father.

Your ultimate Halloween horror movie binge is here. Edgar Wright has joined forces with Mubi to list his 100 favorite horror movies, and the collection is full of classics and surprising choices that range from 1922 to 2016. The director, who himself has given the genre a classic title thanks to “Shaun of the Dead,” names recent horror hits like “Raw,” “The Witch,” and “Train to Busan,” as well as classics from horror masters James Whale and Mario Bava.

Seeing is believing, but hearing can be too. The newest season of Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid’s “Tales From Beyond the Pale” has delivered audio tales about spooky goings on in such far-flung locales as the Stanley Hotel and the film industry itself, with this week’s two new episodes — which IndieWire can exclusively premiere — taking place in rural Pennsylvania and Montreal, respectively.

“Barricade” finds a just-married couple on their honeymoon, where the aftereffects of nearby fracking unleash something chthonic from the ground; Fessenden wrote the 23-minute tale, which features the voice talents of Roxanne Benjamin, Jeremy Gardner, Tony Todd, Samuel Zimmerman. It’s like a short film in sonic form, with the details of just what those beings look like left to the listener’s imagination.

“It” may be a box office smash, but it’s hardly the only horror movie worth talking about these days. Just 17 years in, and the 21st century has already played home to a remarkable number of truly chilling and inventive horror offerings, from a resurgence in J-horror remakes to a continued affection for the classic series of yesteryear, to the massive dominance of the “Conjuring” movie universe and even a “Saw” franchise so dominant that it’s already cycled back into resurrection territory, and that’s just the mainstream stuff.

The Overlook Film Festival is something special. Easily the best genre event I’ve attended, Overlook was created for horror fans by a team whose passion for the genre runs deep. Not only have they scoured the globe for the latest horror movies that fans will get excited for, but they’ve also worked with some of the most creative people in performance art and immersive entertainment to offer attendees one-of-a-kind experiences.
Most film festivals focus heavily on the feature programming side of things for obvious reasons, but The Overlook Film Festival has enough alternative programming that you could spend your entire time focused on it. In fact, I’d say that calling it “alternative programming” does a disservice to what they’ve put together, as their special programming was stronger than the films they screened.
If you want the traditional film festival experience, that is entirely possible. If you...

The newly formed Overlook Film Festival has announced it inaugural year programming lineup, including 37 films (20 features and 17 short films from 16 countries), along with a bevy of location-appropriate genre-themed parties, interactive events, and live experiences. This year, the festival will also fete director Roger Corman with their Master of Horror Award. The award “was established to honor a living legend who has contributed lasting innovations to the genre throughout a long career, inspiring new filmmakers for years to come.”
The fest is styled a 4-day celebration of horror that runs from April 24 – 30 at the historic Timberline Lodge located in Mt. Hood, Oregon, featured in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” as the location of the infamous Overlook Hotel. The new festival comes from some of the same minds behind the now-defunct Stanley Film Festival, a similar horror-themed gathering based in a hotel in Estes Park, Colorado that inspired Stephen King to write his 1977 “Shining” novel.

Herschell Gordon Lewis, a horror icon long known as the “Godfather of Gore,” has passed away of unspecified causes at 87. He was best known for innovating the “splatter” subgenre with 1963’s “Blood Feast,” which Lewis made on a $24,500 budget partly as a response to “Psycho” — he wanted to show the act of murder on film in graphic detail, not just the aftermath. Something Weird Video broke the news on Facebook.

Editor's note: Angus Scrimm, who passed away over the weekend at 88, was a veteran horror actor best known for his role in Don Coscarelli's 1979 cult classic "Phantasm." In his later years, he regularly collaborated with low-budget horror filmmaker James Felix McKenney in films ranging from "The Off Season" to "Automatons." Most recently, Scrimm acted in McKenney's episode of "Tales From Beyond the Pale," which premiered on Indiewire last month. Here, McKenney shares his thoughts on Scrimm's friendship and work ethic. I had the extremely good fortune to direct the man called Angus Scrimm in three feature films and an audio play. I interviewed him for an internet radio show and various DVD bonus features, and co-presented his Lifetime Achievement Award at last year's New York City Horror Festival. I was honored to consider him a friend. We last spoke on the phone just before Christmas. We talked about holiday plans,...

Pre-order the third season of "Tales From Beyond the Pale" here. The story of "Cannibals" involves an established director who confronts a young filmmaker who's been ripping him off. Is this something you've experienced firsthand? Well, I've done my share of idol worshipping — writers and directors I became obsessed with and whose work I devoured. I started off with Cassavetes. I watched his films over and over again, but beyond the film work I really dug into his personal life. I wanted to know what brand of cigarette he.

Pre-order the third season of "Tales From Beyond the Pale" here. How would you say this medium of storytelling differs from filmmaking? From novels? Doing a radio show is like making a movie because you’re dealing with getting performances from actors and working with a sound effects mix to tell the story. But it’s really more like a novel, because radio enlists the audience’s imagination as an active participant. A film shows you pictures, a book makes you supply your own, and so does radio.

It was not looking good my friends. A couple of us just got out of our last screening for the day at Fantasia and were about to hoof it down to a local comedy club for the first ever international presentation of Tales From Beyond the Pale when we looked outside. God was opposed to our desires and his rage translated into forks of lightning across the Montreal skyline. And it almost worked. We fled underground and arose at the other theater thinking we would have to resort to more cinema when God let up his guard. The rains ceased. The ankle...

Purveyor of all things celebrating indie horror, Larry Fessenden, brought his Glass Eye Pix team to The Stanley Film Festival in Estes Park, Colorado for a live performance of Tales from Beyond the Pale, the anthology audio play that channels the old days of scary radio dramas. Y'know, that era when all it took was some actors, some sound effects, some music and your imagination to frighten the heebie-jeebies out of listeners. The series has previously featured the macabre works of Fessenden, Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), Simon Barrett (You're Next) and Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) among many others. For Tales from Beyond the Pale: The Stanley Edition, Fessenden and McQuaid pulled together an acting troupe which included Aj Bowen (The Sacrament), Martin Starr (Silicon Valley), Jocelyn DeBoer (Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead) and even our pal Sam Zimmerman from Fangoria. Fessenden took a leading role as "Jack Landon.

Director Larry Fessenden’s latest feature, Beneath, focuses on six freshly graduated high school seniors who cross paths with a massive, human-eating fish one day on Black Lake. The film is a potent blend of physical and psychological scares, and it’s getting a Blu-ray & DVD release via Scream Factory on March 25th. With the home media release coming soon, I recently chatted with Larry about his experience making Beneath.

Well, I really loved how contained the story was. It all takes place on a lake, on a tiny rowboat, and I’m a fan of the experiments Hitchcock would get up to where you sort of limit your options. He made a...
