Desiree Hartsock, ABC's latest "Bachelorette," dropped by HuffPost Live to discuss life on reality TV.
A HuffPost Live viewer grilled Hartsock why there wasn't a gay or lesbian "Bachelor" or "Bachelorette" yet. Check out the clip above to see what Hartsock had to say.
Of course, ten years ago Bravo had their own form of a gay "Bachelor" series, with America's first gay reality competition show, "Boy Meets Boy." The show, which had various men in a Palm Springs palace fighting for Bachelor James's heart, though some were secretly straight.
"Boy Meets Boy" was not renewed after the first season due to poor ratings and backlash from the gay community concerning the manipulative series.
Season 9 of "The Bachelorette" begins this upcoming Monday, May 27.

On Monday night, E4 launched a new dating show that involved fairytale fancy dress, power ballad singing and catapults.
My Little Princess is the latest in a long history of bonkers dating shows that have made it to the small screen and in tribute to the TV commissioners who considered them wise ideas and in any way romantic, we've collected together our 15 personal favourites.
My Little Princess
Men dressed as princes, who must impress an evil king to secure a date with his daughter. Standard. Throw in lots of mud, talking horses, power ballad sing-offs and men being thrown off bridges. Obviously. My Little Princess blends Tool Academy and Takeshi's Castle to make the ultimate dumb dating show.
Singled Out
The classic MTV series hosted by Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy in the Us featured a wild audience of contestants, who looked like they'd been dragged in from a booze-laden Spring Break wet T-shirt contest.

Birthday shoutouts go to Christopher Gorham (above, with his family) , who is 38, Halle Berry is 46, Marcia Gay Harden is 53, Steve Martin is 67, and Sarah Brightman is 52???, and in addition to her many accomplishments gave us one of the greatest songs of all time. It's also Tim Tebow's 25th birthday, and below you can see him in a hilarious pose from next month's GQ. Either he's completely clueless, or I have to give him credit for self-parody.
Sex Is The Question is the largest survey ever attempted by a Us federal agency for gay and bisexual men. Sponsored by the Center for Disease Control, it will be used by state and local health departments to better understand the HIV epidemic among gay and bisexual men and potentially create new techniques to reverse the trend. 2010 and 2011 were particularly great years for Korean indie cinema, with lots of very worthwhile productions making it to the screen and showcasing a wealth of upcoming talent. One such outing was “Re-encounter”, from writer director Min Yong Keun, who worked on the gay themed shorts “Boy Meets Boy” and “Just Friends?”, and who provided one of the segments of the sexually charged “One Night Stand” anthology. The film first screened at the Pusan Film Festival, winning notice for its skilful and powerful tackling of an emotionally difficult subject. The film stars actress Hye Hwa (Yoo Da In, recently in “The Client”) as a young woman called Hye Hwa, who works as a vet’s assistant and spends her spare time rescuing and caring for abandoned dogs. Although seemingly cheerful, Hye Hwa is emotionally scarred from the stillbirth of the baby she fell pregnant with in high school, and the subsequent...

The sexual politics of The Inbetweeners are deceptively nuanced and really quite moral – it should be a set text in gender studies
Ok, so it's the oldest plot in the book. Boy meets boy meets boy meets boy meets not enough girls, they get together into a hit sitcom then go off on holiday together in a disappointing big screen spin-off. It's enough to make you nostalgic for Are You Being Served?
Is The Inbetweeners Movie any different? No, not really. It is understandably targeting a Farrelly-weaned, young adult, summer holiday audience. It is predictably heavy on the puerile, gross-out gags and teen holiday set-pieces, light on the clever one-liners and unfolding pathos that gave the series such an edge.
It's not a great film, but it has its laughs and it puts a feel-good full stop on a modern comedy masterpiece. As with any successful sitcom, audiences will be...

Like sands through the hourglass ... something, something.
Okay, I forget the rest, but it's one of the most recognizable openings in TV history. Days of Our Lives has been airing on NBC every weekday in the United States since November 8, 1965, and in the 46 years it's been on the air has tackled every subject possible. Except one.
Until now.
Starting on Thursday, June 23rd, Dool will begin its first coming-out story, as teenager Will Horton will begin his emergence from the soap closet.
"Hi, I'm Will! I'm a blond kid with pouty lips. If I wore striped shirts, I'm sure you'd love me!"*
*Atwt reference.
Before we begin our journey with Will, let's meet the major players in order to initiate the Dool virgins, but first let's take a look back at some Dool history.
Maybe we can get an inkling of what to expect by revisiting a couple of the show's most famous storylines.

Television used to be so ... uncomplicated.
You knew that the TV season ran from September to May, and the summer months were a barren wasteland, and you could spend that time doing "summer" things, such as surviving piranha and shark attacks, attending summer camp near crystal lakes, finding a dead body near the train tracks that would lead you and you buds to learn life lessons about friendship, and oh, oh, those summer nights!
Occasionally (as you'll see), the networks would throw something new up during the summer that would catch the eye, but it's only been during the last decade or so that networks such as HBO, Bravo, and Syfy have discovered that there's actually a huge audience for fresh programming during the months of June, July, and August.
Check out these memorable shows, all of which debuted in the months when it was still fashionably legal to wear white.

... Dalam Botol shocks conservative politicians but is criticised by gay activists for negative ending
Boy meets boy. Boy falls in love with boy. Boy has a sex-change procedure in a misguided attempt to please his lover. Boy regrets his decision, moves back to hometown and falls in love with a girl.
The plot of … Dalam Botol (… In a Bottle), Malaysia's first feature film with gay lead characters, is causing a stir in the Muslim-majority country, where consensual sodomy is illegal and depictions of homosexuality in pop culture are taboo.
The film opens next Thursday, but has already provoked the ire of religious organisations. The youth wing leader of the conservative Pan-Malaysian Islamic party (Pas) called it a "shocking" attempt to promote gay culture.
Malaysia's censorship board advised the film's producer, Malaysian novelist Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman, to cut a nude scene and drop the word Anu – the Malay word for...

It’s love (I guess) for Edwin and Lucas…
Hi and welcome to our look at the latest happenings on Dutch soap Good Times, Bad Times. Regular followers of Gays Of Our Lives know that I’ve long had a love-hate relationship with this glossy soap opera, praising it for introducing out and proud gay character Lucas Sanders, but deriding it for not coming forth and providing Lucas a viable love interest-- not to mention some lousy storytelling.
But after teasing viewers with two straight guys and a boyfriend who turned out to be a serial killer, the show finally gave Lucas a real boyfriend in the form of cutie-pie Edwin Bouwhuis.
As in every TV coming out drama, Edwin denied he was gay….
When Lucas and Edwin first met, Lucas was certain that Edwin was gay and brazenly went after him. After a few breakfast meetings, Lucas declared Edwin the love of his life.

Bravo's Boy Meets Boy was ahead of its time. The 2003 dating reality show, which had confirmed bachelor James Getzlaff choose between a bevy of available men (some of whom were secretly straight), was one of the first shows specifically geared towards the personal and romantic lives of gay men.
The cast of Boy Meets Boy
Alas, Bmb didn’t exactly burn up the airwaves and its first season was its one and only. Nor did it set off a stampede of similarly themed programming.
Nonetheless, reality TV has always had at least a hint of gay. Even the first reality show, An American Family, also gave us Lance Loud, the first openly gay person on television, . And Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the flagship that led Bravo into a new age of gayness and popularity, not only helped make gay judges and “experts” a staple of competitive reality TV,...

Q: I´ve been reading the Kathy Griffin book and while it was much less fun than I was hoping for, there was something that really annoyed me -- besides the fact that in her world "the gays" is a synonym for hair dresser or shopping buddy. Kinda makes me wish she´d actually let me at her hair to change that attitude. Anyway, in the book she says that Andy Dick got punched in the face by Wesley Snipes for using (and I quote) "the n-word" in a club. Later there is another Dick story about one of his stand-up appearances where he called the audience repeatedly (and I quote again) "faggots.” So why isn´t it "the n-word" and "the f-word" Or "nigger" and "faggot"? -- Thomas,...

The Seventh Annual TV Land Awards aired last night on ... well, TV Land, and it was a gay couch potato's dream come true. It had a thirtieth anniversary tribute to the classic nighttime soap Knots Landing (and a warmly received marriage equality shout-out by the show's creator David Jacobs), a typically adept hosting job by Neil Patrick Harris (whose Twilight Zone-ish opening musical number can be seen here), and a tribute to Sid & Marty Krofft that ranks as the greatest ten minutes of TV since Andra's freak-out on Boy Meets Boy.
Unfortunately, it also featured some "meh" moments. There were tributes to a couple of shows I never watched (Home Improvement, Magnum P.I.) and the inexplicable tribute to Two and a Half Men as a "Future Classic".
But all in all it was a great night, and we've got some of the highlights to scorch your senses ...

In modern reality television’s 16 years on cable and eight years on network, the genre has given television more (and often better) gay portrayals than scripted programming. Whether part of competitions in artificial contexts or fly-on-the-wall footage of real people's lives, reality TV has offered moments so unexpected that viewers might not have believed them if they occurred on a drama or sitcom.
With the fall television season now underway and reality shows bound to create more such moments – Dancing with the Stars has Lance Bass and Survivor has a gay contestant once again, among others – now's a good time to look back at some of the more memorable moments, ranging from progressive portrayals to cringe-inducing scenes.

Bravo, Trio play executive shuffle

NBC Universal cable channels Bravo and Trio are shuffling development executives in the wake of a departure at Bravo. Amy Introcaso-Davis has been appointed vp development and production for Bravo. She replaces Jamila Hunter, who left the network and is said to be in negotiations with 20h Century Fox Television to join their comedy development team. Fox declined comment. Introcaso-Davis previously led development and production on the East Coast, but will add the West to her responsibilities. Her credits include Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Boy Meets Boy and Celebrity Poker Showdown. She reports to Frances Berwick, senior vp programming and production, at Bravo. Berwick also has recruited two of sister channel Trio's executives to shore up Bravo's ranks in anticipation of bulking up on original programming.

'Nip' soars; 'Queer' snores
NEW YORK -- The new wave of fall series proved a mixed blessing for cable original programming Tuesday. The 10 p.m. FX drama Nip/Tuck actually performed better than usual in the face of increased competition, grabbing 3.7 million total viewers -- its highest tally since its July premiere. The series also topped its highest yield among viewers 18-49 by 300,000 people, reaching 2.7 million in that demo. But the Bravo makeover series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy took a small hit in the same slot, reaching 2.4 million total viewers after snaring 2.8 million the previous week. Another factor that may have spurred the decline was the absence of lead-in Boy Meets Boy, a Bravo original series that has ended its run.

Bravo's gay power couple

NEW YORK -- Gay-themed programming on Bravo continued to stay hot Tuesday, with a solid premiere for Boy Meets Boy and a record-resetting episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. A gay dating show that airs at 9 p.m., Boy bowed to 1.6 million total viewers and just over 1 million viewers in the 25-54 demographic. While slightly under the yield of the Queer premiere three weeks ago, Boy improved the time slot's 25-54 ratings average for 2002-03 by 434%. Even more impressive at 10 p.m. was the performance of Queer, which became the highest-rated program in Bravo's history by netting 2.8 million total viewers. The series undoubtedly gained new viewers from its trial run on NBC in primetime July 24. The combination of Queer and Boy powered Bravo to its highest-rated night in primetime ever among viewers 18-49, beating out all other basic cable nets Tuesday. Bravo didn't have the good news all to itself. The new FX series Nip/Tuck outdelivered Queer at 10 p.m. with 3.3 million total viewers. That's a 10% step down from last week's premiere, but the series improved on its 18-49 yield in Week 1 by 5%, drawing 2.1 million in that demographic.
