Do you believe in destiny?
basato9216 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Shaman King is a story of a world filled with Shamans. Shamans are people gifted with the ability to see the spirits of the deceased, and are able to become one with them to achieve certain goals. Every 500 years, an event known as the Shaman Fight is held to determine the Shaman King in which the strongest of Shamans are to fight in a tournament.

Our main protagonist of the series is Yoh Asakura; an easy going & friendly Shaman who aspires to become the Shaman King in order to create an easy life not just for himself but also for his fiancé Anna, his friends and for the whole world. His spirit is Amidamaru, a 600 year old samurai. Our other protagonists are Yoh's friend Manta and his wife to be Anna. Manta is a rather short normal human, despite not being a Shaman, he can see spirits as well because according to Yoh any good person can see spirits. Manta is Yoh's first friend and supports him throughout the show, he regrets that he can't do more than that but manages to help out in the end. Anna is a spirit medium betrothed to Yoh, she takes responsibility in rigorously training Yoh for the Shaman Fight. She is extremely strict, dedicated, decisive and tough, she never takes crap from anybody, these qualities make her come off as cold & harsh which actually frightens the majority of characters on the show. Deep down she genuinely cares deeply about Yoh & the others.

Other characters include Ryu of the Wooden Sword, originally a gang leader whom through Yoh's actions & character decides to become a Shaman himself to serve & befriend Yoh & to fulfill his dream in creating "the Best Place". Very compassionate & loyal to his friends, he also has a huge fondness for Lyserg. Horohoro is a good natured & cheerful Shaman from Hokkaido whose goal is to create a vast field of Butterbur in order to save the Koro Pokkuru, a tiny spirit people, one of which is Horohoro's spirit. Ren Tao is a strong & determined yet hotheaded & impatient Shaman, a rival to Yoh at first but becomes his ally & friend, he's caring and compassionate, especially for his sister, but keeps hiding that side of him. Lyserg Diethel is a British Shaman who lost his parents to the menace that his Hao at the age of 6, since then he has vowed to avenge their death. He is very kind and caring of those around him but he is emotionally unstable and indecisive which is to be expecting from someone who underwent the murder of his parents. Dr. Faust, an insane necromancer at first, but later in the series becomes Yoh's ally, a skilled doctor who deeply loves his wife Eliza who also acts as his spirit. Lastly we have Chocolove, a shaman and aspiring comedian who to spread the wind of laughter across the world, his puns often annoy his friends. These characters as extremely well written, they all have aspirations, qualities, flaws & quirks. You really do care about them and want to see them succeed.

The 2 main antagonists of the series are Hao Asakura & the X-Laws. The X-Laws are an extremist group devoted to the cause of eliminating Hao and his followers. Even though they have a noble cause, their methods of killing their adversaries is received with great disapproval from other Shamans. Lyserg joins them because they share his similar disdain for Hao. They follow their leader the Iron Maiden Jeanne whom they treat as a Christ-like figure and hardly ever question her. Despite their reputation and ruthless agenda, they display huge amounts of loyalty to their cause, their leader and to each other, willing to die for them. Though you are made to loathe them and wish for Lyserg to return to his friends, by their last appearance you do feel sorry for them and even root for them. Hao Asakura is the main threat to the Shaman community, his goal is to annihilate mankind and create a world only for Shamans as he sees humans as the world's undoing. He is like a combination of Magneto & Apocalypse from X-men, he wants to do away with humans in order to advance society and he'd discard anyone he sees as weak for they are unworthy in his perspective. He wants to become Shaman King and obtain the Great Spirits to do so. He has a mysterious connection to Yoh & his family. Hao is a very amazing villain, he's calm & collective, fears no one, ruthless and likes a challenge. They do a good job in building him up to this formidable adversary that even you as a viewer should fear.

The music selection in this show is great, it has J-rock & J-pop songs that are catchy and energetic which fits the mood of this show. It has many other songs as well which range from happy to haunting.

The animation is good, while it is not as good as Full Metal Alchemist or the works of Miyazaki, it's still nice to look at, each of the characters have distinguishable features and the oversouls of the Shamans look pretty cool.

Overall, this is an awesome show; with great story & plot, excellent characters, & energetic music making this show an enjoyable viewing experience. I'd recommend the anime & manga which I heard is different. I'd go with the subtitled Japanese version because the English dub was done by 4Kids who are infamous when it comes to dubbing anime.

Not Just Jojos bizarre adventure for kids despite its obvious influences
jameslevay28 November 2018
Shaman king is a very good shonen anime that takes inspiration from Jojos bizarre adventure. Even though it was dubbed by 4kids back in 2003 it was a very dark series. I remember watching the anime and reading the manga when I was 10 years old and being fascinated with the shows spiritual and religious concepts along with being mildly disturbed by one of the villains. Not just a kids show if you like JoJo or yuyu hakusho or any other super natural shonen give this a watch also don't watch the dub the only thing good about that was the opening.

One of my favorite anime shows!
Queen_of_Shadows3 April 2005
I love anime. My favorite anime shows are Inuyasha,Rave Master and of course Shaman King. What I love about this anime is the storyline, the animation and the characters.

Storyline:Shaman King is about a 14-year-old shaman boy named Yoh who lives in a world where people and spirits can see and communicate with each other. He also makes friends with a boy named Morty who can see ghosts as well even if he's not a shaman.Yoh even finds a guardian ghost named Amidamaru,a great Japanease samurai who died at the age of 24.Being Yoh's new guardian ghost,Amidamaru travels with Yoh to fight other shamans and eventually, become the shaman king.Yoh even has help from his bossy, tough and rather terrifying fiancé and trainer,Ana who also happens to be a Spirit Medium who can summon and communicate with the dead with a necklace of beads no matter where in the world she is.As Yoh prepares for the shaman tournament (the biggest fight to determine the Shaman King),he makes some unexpected friends along the way and discovers the power he holds as a shaman.

Animation:The animation of this show is the best. The parts when the shamans use spirit unity or furioku are well sketched out which is why I love those parts. The expressions on the characters are priceless especially when the characters are depressed or angry and there's a shadow drawn over their eyes which viewers just can't help wondering about what will happen. The way the characters are drawn is also fantastic. Most of the wacky hair styles on the characters are good ways of remembering who's who because anyone who watches Shaman King could never forget such well drawn yet strange hair of each character.

Characters:Yoh just happens to be my favorite character on the show because of his easy-going,trusting and relaxed personality and how he can see the good in everyone even in most of his enemies.Ana's ways of torturing Yoh yet improving him are hilarious. It's really nice to see an anime girl with a whole lot of backbone and an appearance showing almost no fear. When she wasn't fighting with Yoh when he was up against a Dao-shi (someone who controls zombies with talisman),I was a bit disappointed in her but after she explained to Morty why she wasn't fighting was because she had faith in Yoh,it made me happy she was my favorite female on the show.Morty's interesting.I'd like to know and see more of his family but other than that,I like him because he's extremely loyal to his friends.Rio's awesome. At first,I thought he was going to be a freak but I saw he was funny and also helpful to Yoh.I also like how he defends Yoh's honor if someone insults Yoh.Len at first seemed like a psychopath who just wanted to destroy but after Yoh invited Len to his house,I saw Len was a decent character and liked how he became a friend of Yoh's.Trey's hilarious and I also like his dedication to nature.Lyserg at first was an okay character but after he joined the X-Laws (fighters for good but fight with no mercy)I hated him ever since and he left just because Yoh was defending someone who was evil from the X-Laws.The X-Laws are just annoying because they hide behind their fancy guns and whatnot and just blast people who they think are evil. All around, there really isn't a character I hate on this show.Altogether,I rate this show an 8/10.

Shaman king is the best!!!
jyns521 October 2006
hi, i just want to leave a comment ^_^, I was just wondering if shaman king episode 64 is the last... because I took a lot of my time watching this anime and then me and my friends were waiting for the moment between Anna and Yoh, but if episode 64 is the last, I'm really disappointed because it left a lot of questions, and then when i saw the manga written by takei, there seems to be an exciting part of Anna and Yoh having Hana Asakura, but takei wrote 200+ chapters and its really far from the incomplete anime. But you know I still enjoy Shaman king fights and many of the parts are funny... ^_^ but the thing is it is not fair for us people to not know what will happen and of course we will be all glad to watch it. Please I really need you to complete this anime. thanks! goodluck!

Something Special
mikomijade9 July 2007
there is something very special about this cartoon indeed. that is no true shaman history at all....and I guess that is not about shamans basically. So! For those who considers he(she) can find it useful in study of a shamanism - not the right place. But for those who wanna see a very kind anime - you are on board. I have heard that kids really do accept everything from the cartoon as the pure and undeniable truth about the world of shamans.....but shamans predominantly do not get together in groups and they do not make competitions......anyway - as I said the most important thing in this cartoon is a friendship, love and backing up theme. Destiny and fight against evil at all costs - these are the basic aspects of this wonderful anime - surprising is the fact that this is anime that could be rated for kids of any age.

4kids should bring us
tommypezmaster25 September 2007
i started watching this show a few years ago, and it was my daily morning fix. I really thought the idea of bringing a load of cool characters, new and old together was an excellent idea. I also quite liked voice-acting & plots, as it brings back the olden days (2003-2005)and introduces them to young children. I also thought that the characters were quite good, and the creators of this show (whoever they are) added some really interesting traits to the classic characters eg. Morty becoming a helper like Toad (Mario Game Series), and Anna & other females, Tammy & Millie becoming Shaman Queen was really good. Another thing was that they added some new characters, eg Rio who was an annoying version of the main character (Yo or whatever it's spelled)! The side stories were also rather well thought out. So, to conclude a very good and interesting series!

Digimon but with spirits
stefanozucchelli13 November 2021
Good series that begins with a boy who sees ghosts and ends with clashes between demigods to decree the fate of the world. I'm sorry that the series didn't have a real ending but was cut off towards the end but luckily the manga exists.

Great potential, but that's it
sir_daniel9310 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not comparing the Anime/Manga and I'm not comparing Japan/En version. Just the English show as it is.

First of all, I've really enjoyed the show , when I was a kid, but I did remember something seemed off at the end of it all. I've just re-watched it, and there's too many stuff that is badly made.

While the story could've been amazing, too many things don't add up and/or are left behind. Since I don't wanna make this too long I'l just make a quick bullet-point list:

  • The spirit fusion by Joco was shown once, and was left behind. - Too few moves - Celestial Slash - and that's it. - (almost) no love story/not developed one. Considering the main characters are teens, would've been quite appropriate (despite the ~2 months series span). - The overall structure was dull with a lot of "filling" moments. Few episodes introducing characters, few for the first round, 30-40 searching Dobi Village with a lot of gibberish in between, and a mediocre 2nd round/ending. - The Shaman King Tournament structure was bad on it's own. Two rounds for ALL the shamans IN THE WORLD!? - Somewhat uneven distribution of power gaining. Yoh is gaining power as it's nothing. Round 1 Yoh, would've been kicked by everyone from round 2. - With the furioko meter, they could've at least said what was Yoh power level, just because. - Zeke had mastered pretty much everything, though we saw his water elemental spirit just for a minute or two? Not to mention the other 3 spirits that we didn't see. - Zeke Didn't have even one signature move? For 1000 years? - He needed Yoh really badly, but still he just ate the Spirit King even without him? - We never saw the Spirit King? - The spirit king was just a weakling that Zeke ate like it was nothing? 1000 years vs eternity? - Almost no character development if we don't count Lemmy? - We got almost nothing from the back-story of the shamans and the spirits? - The 1080 beads were there because of...? - What happened with all the characters in the end? The pink haired girl that like Yoh? - The final battle was Mediocre AT BEST! - If Zeke is Destroyed where does the Spirit King go? - And overall, there could've been a lot more story, suspense, fight moves for 64 episodes.

On the plus side the show had a good concept and it was p(h)unny + some good characters.

I'll read the Manga at some point and hope for the best, because the show left me utterly disappointed.

64 episodes of paranormal joy.
madman_okiu15 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Yoh, a Japanese shaman, moves to Tokyo in order to train for the Shaman Fight that occurs only once every 500 years, where all the shamans of the world contend to own the Ultimate Soul; The King Spirit.

It's a rather basic plot aimed for young boys, someone (Yoh, the shaman, in this case) wants to achieve an important goal and endures many fights and tender friendship scenes to reach it. Ghosts, spirits, a superb character gallery, great voice actors and crisp animations makes it stand out of that huge pile of similar plots.

I haven't had the privilege of seeing the (overly)cut and dubbed version of it made by 4Kids, but considering their other dubbing-works I doubt it's worth seeing that way, as the original is worthy of eternal fandom.

English version massacred it
LigerZero800015 November 2004
I hope no one here is judging it by the English version... they completely changed it, removing all Japanese references, changing the character's names, and making it for little kids. Certain character's names stayed to same, such as Yoh Asakura, Amidamaru, and Anna, but many of them changed. Manta Oyamada became Morty Manta. Ryu became Rio. Lien Tao, who is Chinese, became Lenny... who is British. Horohoro became Trey. An entire storyline got cut from the English version... a storyline that explains how Yoh gets his sword. In the English version he just kind of has it suddenly, and Rio suddenly has a spirit ally. All Japanese writing, even on signs in the distant background, were either changed to English or whited out. Thankfully, 4Kids has released an uncut version on DVD, though they kept the English names.

Awesome, but strange
wolfman85524 December 2004
I just got Shaman King: A Boy Who Dances With Ghosts on DVD from my best friend as a Chistmas gift today, and it's pretty different from the TV series. It doesn't have any of the same quotes as posted on this website, and they don't use Americanisms either. It's simple, plain English. The sword is called Harusame instead of the Sword of Light. On the box it says English Dub is available as well, but I cannot find it. It still gets the same message across, but it's...different. Could somebody help me out? I would appreciate it a lot.

Anyways, it was AWESOME!! I'm watching it as we speak. I haven't seen any blood yet, except in a brief scene in Episode 3: Tao Len. And Lenny's Rapide Tempo Assault is called "Slash Dance." I recommend it for any hardcore Shaman King fan!

Not as good as the manga
falconstrife866 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Shaman King by Hiroyuki Takei (the creator) is a wonderful manga, and a great anime (albeit short). The tale of a young boy (Oyamada Manta) and his shamanic friend (Asakura Yoh) and the adventures they go through in Yoh's quest to be Shaman King - one who controls the king of spirits.

At a distant glance, Shaman King seems like another fighting show like Dragonball, but when more closely examined one finds that Shaman King is much more complex. What is at first a tournament to control the Great Spirit becomes a dramatic battle to keep the reincarnation of a former (psychotic) shaman from destroying all humans and weak shamans.

Unfortunately, though, the anime fails to bring some light upon important characters. Yoh's mother barely plays a role in the show, as compared to the anime. Manta's family is completely cut out of the show, while in the manga his abusive father presents Manta and eventually Yoh with serious conflict.

The English dub of Shaman King is one of the most painful things to ever happen to anime, though. To start, the show was originally rated PG-13. 4Kids dumbed it down to PG. Many of the characters were butchered in different ways; 1) Manta became a bratty, arrogant kid named Mortimer (not to mention his family's servant, Tamura, becomes his rich uncle Jerry).

2) Yoh became a cheeseburger-obsessed freak, who's philosophical thinking was demolished.

3) Ryu went from a brotherly young man to a self-absorbed moron named Rio (not to mention they diminished his bisexuality).

4) Ren went from a proud Chinese shaman to an irritating, British punk named Lenny (not to mention that his father En was turned into Uncle En).

5) Horokeu gained an identity crisis, holding two names (Trey Racer and Horo Horo).

6) Hao went from a frighteningly evil shaman to an arrogant, irritating punk named 'Zeke'.

However, whether it be the dub or the original, Shaman King relies heavily on the secondary characters, unlike most other shows.

Takei has also integrated history and legends into Shaman King.

The characters Amidamaru and King Hao are based on people who existed centuries ago in Japan. It also gives some insight of feudal Japan.

Horo Horo introduces the culture of the Japanese tribe, Ainu, while adding jokes. While his name is Ainu for 'Wolf', other characters often tease him and call him "Boro", which means 'rag'.

Faust VIII is based on Johann Faustus from the 1400's, and his advanced oversoul is named "Mephisto E", after Mephistopheles, whom the original Faust made a deal with to gain knowledge. One may also notice that besides being somewhat identical, the German characters Faust VIII and Eliza are very similar to Hitler's image of the 'perfect race'.

Overall, I'd say that the original animated version is okay. In any case, the English dub is the most painful way to experience Shaman King. The best way to experience Shaman King, though, is to read the manga.

Thought it was okay at first but then got better
SonicStuart12 March 2004
This show is pretty interesting but I have seen a few episodes and they were cool. But I didn't like Yu-Gi-Oh but at least the creators of it came up with something a little better but still no contest. I think Yoh is really cool! I like his style and his cool relaxed attitude! This show sort of reminds me of Medabots almost except this is ghosts instead of robots. But on the other side the spirits and the action on the show is pretty cool and all. But my other most favorite shows for the Fox Box is probably Sonic X along with Kirby: Right Back At Ya! and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Shaman King follows the adventures of a 13-year-old shaman and his teammate a samurai warrior spirit, who traverse the world fighting evil spirits and misguided shamans on their journey to be the next Shaman King. I now think the show is pretty good I just needed to see more of the show in order to get the idea of it.

User Rating: 7/10

BOTTOM LINE: NOT BAD AT FIRST BUT BETTER AFTER!

Shaman King. Japanese versus English
Lilchibi-13 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
personally, I love Shaman King. Shaman King is a great anime with a really nice plot.. and the animation is great! But personally, I thought that the English dub was horrible. As they change the plot that Hiroyuki Takei had originally planned out. Some differences are the name changes, which bothers me way more than it should. For example: Hao is turned to Zeke, Horo Horo is changed to Trey, Tamao is changed to Tamera, Morphine to Chloe.. and so on and so on. Another thing, they changed the whole Tao story line. En Tao, Who was originally Ren and Jun's Father- is changed to his uncle. Not only that- but they also state that En Tao killed Ren and Jun's father, which is totally inaccurate. I'm also pretty sure, that Chocolove isn't able to make most of his jokes, because they wouldn't sound the same in English. Also, they make some jokes about Horo Horo's name, which if in Japanese you add dots.. it becomes Boro Boro, which means sleazy, old, piece of trash.. things similar to that, and throughout the series they joke about it. I highly recommend picking up the manga or attempting to find the Japanese version if you're wanting to watch Shaman King, for full enjoyment.

Do not watch this unless you are a die-hard anime fan
telliskivi_inc20 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This show is made to be enjoyed only by the people that are die-hard anime fans. To any other person it would be hugely annoying and a true pain to sit through. Shaman King is a mixture of

1. Bad jokes. And I do mean bad. The jokes try to be funny but end up being annoying. 2. Horrible characters that are clichés of every other anime show characters. We have the carefree main character, the abusive girlfriend and a purposefully small and insignificant sidekick. There are other characters, but those 3 are the main ones. 3. A horrible story

If you are an anime fan you will probably look over all of those and still watch it but if you aren't an anime fan then stay far away from this show.

Score: 1/10

The show is so different from the manga.
Fairy_Godmoose10 April 2004
On 'Shaman King', they call Manta Oyamada 'Morty'. They call Tao Ren 'Lenny'. They call Bokuto no Ryu 'Rio'. They call Sha-Wen 'Shaolin', and Lee Bailong 'Lee Pairong'. They pronounce Tao Jun and Bason wrong. Who made this? Whoever did obviously didn't read the manga.

The only episode I watched beginning to end was the one where Yoh, Sha-Wen (Shaolin), and Amidamaru fought Lee Bailong. I didn't have a big problem with this part, but it wasn't as funny as in the manga: Manta (Morty) runs away from the battle to find a sword for Amidamaru. He finds a wooden sword, a bokuto, but gets stopped by a gang, and Ryu (Rio) saves him.

This is what should've happened: Manta still runs around, and still finds a bokuto, but the owner is Ryu, who's followed by his own gang. After consulting his conscience and his shoulder-demon, he begs for the sword, and gets hit by Spaceshot and Apache, Ryu's near-deaf stooges. He gets a bloody nose, and asks again. They hit him again. Looking even more beat-up, Manta pleads with them one final time. Ryu smashes him into a wall, and Manta lays seemingly dead. Ryu and his gang walk away, but the nose-bloodied, scratched, and bruised Manta leaps up with his heavy dictionary and whacks Ryu. Convinced Manta is a zombie, the stooges and Ryu run off, leaving Manta with the bokuto.

That was long. Anyway, these guys gotta make the anime more like the manga.

I absolutely, positively LOVE Shaman King. I am devoted fan. But I absolutely LOATHE the Dubbed version. The voices are horrible (Ren, Jun(They are not British, people) Anna...) The dubbed names are atrocious. (How the heck did Hao go to Zeke? Be reasonable at least keep it close...maybe Howie? And Lenny? I understand Len but not Lenny. And Trey Racer...what the heck? ). The plot remains fairly intact but because of the X-laws you know they are cutting out a lot of stuff. Yoh does not want to become a rock star...he wants an easy life.

Yet this comes from the fact I watched the original Japanese version before they dubbed it. I actually own the entire series. Even the manga is edited but they keep the plot very close to the original and the jokes(Some I do understand why...)

Rating Dubbed: 3/10 (I give 4kids some credit but very...very little because the ruin many animes) Subbed: 10/10

Great anime
Toxie200020 November 2003
This series airs in America on the Foxbot but unfortunately doesn't compare to the original uncut version that aired in Japan. Shaman King is about a 13-year old boy named Yoh Asakura who can control a 600-year old spirit named Amidamaru who helps him in fighting over shamans and spirits. It's still a good kids on show foxbox but anyone over the age of 8 will cringe at the voices and jokes. It's not hard to find import dvd's of the it so anyone into fighting anime like DBZ should give this a shot.
