North civilizations myths
Un-Enfant28 March 2005
Sorry for my horrible English accent, but please just remember one thing: this video is a must!

M. Senada did researches on the Eskimo community, maybe read Jean Malaurie and others, and promoted his knowledge with art in 1979, with the release of Eskimo (music) by The Residents. The music communicated the mythology of the relation between the everlasting night in the great north and the Inuits. It kept a large stroke for interpretation, being fuzzy, mystic, impressionist, romantic and nostalgic, and was an attempt to keep alive an atmosphere that could not be possible anymore in today's world, because the arctic isn't isolated anymore. Fully educational, sensible, intelligent.

The only reason I didn't give the movie a perfect note is that it kinda destroyed the magic of the music, by making harsh and direct relations between sounds and images. To make the mystery atmosphere even more present, I would have work with a softer approach. On the other side, the treatment of the pictures, the stories, the rhythm, dive us again into the myth, where we feel being an Eskimo. Above all, it's still one of the rare movie showing an artistic approach so successful. Nice initiative, which I deeply respect.
