Hints Of Greatness

Utaemon Ichikawa is Goto Mototsugu, an epic figure of a samurai who led a real life around the beginning of the 17th century. His master's army exhausted, when he proposes a night attack, he is turned down..... then simply rides against the enemy himself, and all the troops follow him to victory. Now his master tries to cement his power by assassinating his enemy, but Goto refuses, meets him in battle, and kills him honorably. He then quits. His former master sends assassins against him and the horde of followers who have quit to follow this beggar general, but they cannot do it.

In short, he's a romantic, quixotic figure, a Japanese beau ideal. I found this movie, that was made in 1945, then removed from circulation by the occupying forces to be a trifle abrupt. I suspect, although I saw a copy whose length matches the IMDb listing, it was cut down considerably for later reissue. Or perhaps the stories about Goto were so well known that it was not considered necessary to offer many details. In any case, there are hints of a rich story, and the lead actor hams it up marvelously. There are plenty of trucking shots to add excitement, a hint of an unconsummated romance, and likewise an indication of a nice revenge plot. For its short length, it's a lot of fun.
