There are few monster movies that can claim to have as much respect in cinema history, as well as just sheer scope of influence, as 1954's "Godzilla." Also known as "Gojira" in its native Japan, the heralded classic of the kaiju genre remains a haunting dissection of the atrocities of World War II through the lens of a nation contending with the horrors they faced, namely the atomic bomb. It's also, not for nothing, one heck of a showcase for old-school practical creature effects. The now-iconic titular monster was brought to life using a practical suit worn by Haruo Nakajima. A legend was born of that performance, but he paid the price during filming.
In the 2017 book "Godzilla on My Mind" by William M. Tsutsui, it's explained that the costume used in "Godzilla" was created using "a framework of bamboo stakes and wire, with thick overlays of latex and plentiful padding of urethane foam.

Pigeon Shrine FrightFest have unveiled Graham Humphreys’ stand-out poster design for 2024 which marks the 25th anniversary of the UK’s most popular genre festival and the festival’s move to the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square. States Humphreys:
Although FrightFest marks its first quarter century, the significant change of venue is this year’s focus. The soaring black Art Deco tower of the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square (completed in 1937) is as iconic to London as the Art Deco Empire State Building in New York. In the 1933 movie ‘King Kong’, the giant primate scaled the Empire State Building. It seems a fitting homage to have our own monster scale the Leicester Square landmark… the top of the world for the king of horror festivals.
FrightFest Co-director Ian Rattray observed:
The move to our new venue after many successful years is bittersweet, but we are excited about the fresh opportunities and experiences it will bring.

Even in this age of instant YouTube gratification, movie trailers are a big deal. They get us hyped for an upcoming project by making promises that the eventual film will (hopefully) pay off. The best sizzle reels are even able to do this by giving a taste of things to come without ruining any surprises or plot twists. Think about the teaser for Alien with its cracking egg and unnerving siren sound, or the deft use of a choral version of Radiohead’s “Creep” in the classic promo for The Social Network. Both of those examples speak to the haunting nature of their movies while allowing space for the film to stand on its own down the road.
But some trailers do their job too well. Some trailers outdo the movies they advertise, sometimes because the film has a concept too shallow to sustain more than three minutes, and sometimes...

In the summer of 1968, months after the releases of We’re Only in It for the Money and Lumpy Gravy and a few months ahead of the release of Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention found time for a five-hour concert on the Sunset Strip. A new box set, Whisky a Go Go, 1968 — due out June 21 — chronicles the unique evening, which the band recorded for release but, in Zappa’s signature fashion, divvied up for spare parts on other recordings. Given their close-knit relationship as global entertainment industries, gaming and the movies have long had a symbiotic connection. Movie tie-in games, for instance, have been a popular feature in gaming for decades, with numerous short-form releases over the years attempting to distil linear, cinematic storylines into interactive ones — albeit with varying success.
A Brief History of Gaming and the Movies
Of course, it’s not been uncommon over the years for studios to churn out poor quality movie-tie in titles that barely represent the characters and narratives we’ve fallen for on the big screen. However, there have been some outright successes and unexpected releases in alternative gaming genres.
In addition to being video game franchises, movies have even inspired online casino games and plenty of other activities throughout the iGaming sector. IP such as King Kong, Jurassic Park and even The Lord of The Rings have all been transformed...

The rising star on transitioning from man to beast for Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes.
When Owen Teague was four years old, he saw Disney’s Beauty And The Beast and wanted to be in it. Not do a voice in it — actually be in it. “My mum was like, ‘Um, okay, sure, but that’s an animation. There are community theatres you can audition for?’” So he started doing community theatre, mostly musicals. Then, in 2005, Peter Jackson’s King Kong arrived. Seven-year-old Owen was bewitched. When his mum explained that King Kong was played by an actual guy in a performance- capture suit, Teague saw his future.
Almost 20 years later, he is that guy. In Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, Teague plays the lead, Noa, a young chimpanzee born nearly 300 years after the events of the last film in the franchise. After a successful audition...

Over the past few years, there have been several movies and features based on Godzilla, King Kong, and several other Kaijus that have gradually made their way to the entertainment industry. While several of these movies have failed to hit their mark, Godzilla Minus One and the more recently released Godzilla x Kong have been remarkable Kaiju entries.
Godzilla x Kong: the New Empire
What makes these movies stand out? While the success of Godzilla Minus One is a whole other tale, Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has simpler guiding principles. In a new interview, the director revealed how his not wanting to make the same mistake as Gareth Edwards helped him make the two Monster Verse movies that fans dearly love.

“Godzilla” may be 70 years old, but it’s showing no signs of slowing down.
At the 96th Academy Awards last month, “Godzilla Minus One” became the first “Godzilla” movie to ever win an Oscar. The 37th entry in the franchise, the Japanese “Minus One” took home the trophy for Best Visual Effects. In fact, it was the first “Godzilla” film ever nominated by the academy in any category.
Talk about being overdue. The question now becomes … can “Godzilla” strike again next year?
As you’re reading this, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” continues to destroy at the box office for Warner Bros. Its domestic receipts have passed $150 million. Worldwide, its grosses are well over $430 million and counting. The sequel to 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” its reviews have been somewhat mixed. Many critics have compared it negatively to last year’s acclaimed “Godzilla Minus One,” which scored an impressive 98% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Whenever you visit one of the major theme park resorts in Florida you often feel immersed in the scenery and attractions, fooling your inner child to think that you have gone to a magical world. But most people know that it’s all make believe and that you should still be on your best behavior. But there are a few who tend to take things a bit too far.
A guest who was visiting Universal Studios Orlando decided to play King Kong outside of the Skull Island: Reign of Kong ride. The young boy was caught on video climbing the massive sign outside of the attraction and sitting on top like it was the Empire State Building. However he was acting more like a Donkey than a King.

Helldivers 2 has been out for about three months and in that time, we have seen plenty of new and interesting content, from mission types, weapons, and stratagems.
The community achieved a major milestone when they defeated the Automaton army and had their hopes swiftly dashed a few days later when they returned. Helldivers 2 is still going strong and has daily player counts in the hundreds of thousands and the speculations of crossovers are all around.
We’re Yet to See Confirmation of Franchise Crossovers
Crossovers in Helldivers 2 would make the game a much more strong contender for Goty.
There is one thing though that we have not yet seen added to the game that would surely boost the popularity of the game even further, franchise crossovers. In an interview with Cgm, Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt was asked about the possibility of guest characters from the game’s major inspirations making appearances.

"Enter our Miniwood world!!" Click play and have fun with this Hollywood tribute. A design studio based in Athens, Greece called Yeti Pictures has debuted a 74-second long animated short film called Miniwood. This was created by the studio in their spare time as a way to promote their work and honor their favorite movies from growing up. "It's always hard to find spare time between commercial work to make these short films happen but team projects are what keeps Yeti moving forward and keeps our passion for animation alive." Directed by Yeti's Tony Zagoraios, famous scenes from these movies are recreated in their "miniworld style," with miniature characters that are direct references to action figures or toys. It features homages to classics including Jurassic Park, The Exorcist, King Kong, The Addams Family, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and RoboCop. I'd watch vignettes like this for 100 more movies!

Dan Wallin, the music scoring engineer who recorded such classic film scores as “Spartacus,” “Bullitt,” “The Wild Bunch” and “Out of Africa,” died early Wednesday in Hawaii. He was 97.
Twice Oscar-nominated for best sound (1970’s “Woodstock” and 1976’s “A Star Is Born”), he won a 2009 Emmy for sound mixing on the Academy Awards telecast and received two additional Emmy nominations in the sound mixing category.
But it was Wallin’s skill behind the console, recording and mixing musical scores for movies and TV, that won him legions of fans among nearly all of Hollywood’s top composers and ensured steady employment for more than half a century.
He recorded the music for an estimated 500 films, including those for “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Cool Hand Luke” and “Finian’s Rainbow” in the 1960s; “The Way We Were,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Nashville,” “King Kong” and “Saturday Night Fever” in the 1970s; “Somewhere in Time,” “The Right Stuff...

The Lord Of The Rings trilogy films of the 2000s won fans’ hearts across the globe. While the story was already popular among readers of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy adventure books, the films introduced the epic Middle Earth saga to millions more.
They also made director Peter Jackson and lead actor Elijah Wood, household names. However, many are unaware that at a point, the trilogy’s visionary director had almost been cut out of the project. The Lord Of The Rings trilogy was almost doomed when Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax held its film rights.

Kevin Smith could have bought the Quick Stop market he made famous in his first film, “Clerks.” But when the opportunity arose, the indie director instead put his hard-earned cash into his childhood movie theater in Atlantic Highlands, N.J., reopening it in 2022 as SModcastle Cinemas.
Now he’s fighting to keep the 103-year-old non-profit theater going, even if “exhibition is in the toilet,” as he likes to say. In other words, local audiences sometimes prefer to watch big hits like “Avatar” in modern multiplexes, and keeping a repertory theater vibrant without the help of a pricey beer and wine license is not for the faint of heart, he has found.
No matter: The “Chasing Amy” director is leveraging his pop culture brand to focus on bringing the New Jersey community classic cult movies, family films, merchandise sales and super-fresh popcorn.

When Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, the folks at The Asylum quickly put together a mockbuster called Ape vs. Monster, which featured a giant chimpanzee battling a giant Gila monster (after both creatures were enlarged by consuming a mysterious substance leaking from a space capsule). A sequel called Ape vs. Mecha Ape followed in 2023. Now the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is in theatres, and The Asylum will be giving their mockbuster Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order a digital and theatrical release this Friday, April 5th. In anticipation of the release, a trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order has been written and directed by Marc Gottlieb, who previously directed Ape vs. Mecha Ape and the 1995 comedy Cousin Howard. Gottlieb’s other writing credits include Planet of the Sharks,...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire‘s lead designer cleared the speculations surrounding the kaiju’s new pink spines, revealing that it was inspired by Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. While many fans speculated that Godzilla’s pink spine was a rip-off from the Super Saiyan Rosé form in Dragon Ball Super, it actually turned out to be inspired by Goku’s Kaio-ken technique.

The box office needed a hero. It got two monster-sized heroes over the weekend in the form of Godzilla and King Kong. Warner Bros. and Legendary's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" stomped into theaters and, quite frankly, obliterated expectations. The latest entry in the MonsterVerse pulled in $80 million domestically over Easter weekend which was significantly more than pre-release box office tracking suggested it was going to make.
Put simply, audiences ate up what director Adam Wingard had to offer, which was a massive monster beat-em-up even more overflowing with action than the filmmaker's 2021 entry in the franchise, "Godzilla vs. Kong." Internationally, "GxK" also outperformed expectations, pulling in $114 million for a total global opening of $194 million. It's exactly what movie theaters needed and it's great news for those who want to see this franchise continue. So, what went so right? Why did this kaiju duo sell so many more tickets than anyone expected?...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire premiered on March 29, 2024, as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, but fans are amazed as things stand now, and the box office earnings seem to confirm that. The movie surpassed expectations for its opening day and previews, and now that the first weekend is over, it has earned an amazing $194 million, landing the best opening weekend of the year, as well as breaking into the top ten list of highest-grossing movies after just one weekend.
The movie has just started its theatrical run, and to be frank, it is projected to become a box office hit. With the success of the movie, the MonsterVerse franchise also managed to hit past the $2-billion mark, becoming one of the most lucrative franchises in movie history.

Adam Wingard's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" features an epic team-up between the legendary beasts, Godzilla and Kong, underlining the necessity to push aside a millennia-spanning feud to tackle an even greater threat. Firmly rooted in the perspective of the monsters, where most of the storytelling stems from nonverbal, evocative visuals (which are also cool as heck), "Godzilla x Kong" understands the appeal of the monster movie genre -- it's pure spectacle that often tugs at the heartstrings. While it cannot get much simpler than that, the film does a commendable job of pitting two giants against a villain scorned, whose motivations culminate in destroying the world without a second thought about the cost of such an act.
The monster movie franchise is as gargantuan as the beasts that are featured in it, spanning back to 1933's "King Kong," which kickstarted a cultural phenomenon that still feels fresh and fun to this day.

Easter continues its tradition as a great holiday weekend for a big studio movie release, proven by the sequel “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” which far exceeded all expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Almost three years after Warner Bros. released director Adam Wingard‘s “Godzilla vs. Kong” at the height of the pandemic with a simultaneous HBO Max streaming release, the franchise was able to return to traditional theatrical by releasing “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” into 3,861 theaters on Friday. Starring Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle from the previous movie, joined by Dan Stevens, Wingard’s sequel received mixed-to-negative reviews, but after making $10 million in Thursday previews “Godzilla x Kong” brought in $37 million on Good Friday, which is just slightly less than the $38.4 million opening day for “Godzilla” back in 2014.
Business kept up through the weekend for $80 million estimated from Warner Bros.

If the Barbenheimer phenomenon taught us anything, it's that audiences love the combination of hot pink aesthetics and wide-scale destruction -- and "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is here to prove it. After setting a new record for the MonsterVerse with $10 million from Thursday night preview ticket sales, the team-up sequel is now on track for the franchise's biggest opening weekend since 2014's "Godzilla," the movie that kicked things off.
"Godzilla vs. Kong" director Adam Wingard returned to helm "The New Empire," in which King Kong has a cool new metal glove and Godzilla's atomic energy has a pink glow. It looks like those selling points were enough for audiences, as Deadline reports that "Godzilla x Kong" grossed a massive $37 million on its opening day (including the $10 million from previews) and is expected to gross $75 million or more over its first weekend in theaters, with potential to climb as high as $80 million.

When it comes to the question of which character has the best rogue’s gallery, most people immediately go with Batman or Spider-Man. Some of the more initiated might even go with The Flash. But be encouraged to think bigger — much bigger.
Over 69 years, and four eras — Showa, Heisei, Millennium and Reiwa — Godzilla has faced many threats. While some have proven to be more memorable than others, they’ve all worked in the service of Godzilla’s longevity and legacy. Much of Godzilla’s lasting appeal, and how he subsists in pop culture, is due to the popular “Godzilla vs.” concept that has seen some of his greatest adversaries rebooted and reimagined through the eras, alongside the creation of new enemies — a more difficult but no less necessary endeavor.

When “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” director Adam Wingard first set foot on the set of 2019’s “Godzilla: King of Monsters” in preparation for his MonsterVerse debut with “Godzilla vs. Kong” (2021), he didn’t know what to expect. “I felt very intimidated when I got hired on ‘Godzilla vs. Kong,'” Wingard told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast.
“You do these indie movies, and you’re used to a certain size. So what does it mean when you get to the biggest level of movies where you’re over $100 million?” When Wingard arrived on the “King of Monsters” set in Atlanta, he was immediately struck by the size of the production: “The footprint was big, big, big.”
Yet, as Wingard moved from the trailers to craft services and got deeper into the soundstage, he made an interesting discovery. “I kept getting closer and closer to set, and things started looking more and more familiar,...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire."
Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong" was one of 2021's most pleasant blockbuster surprises, primarily because it represented a successful step up in filmmaking scale for the very talented Adam Wingard. More than a few eyebrows arched when the director, best known for his pulpy (and very R-rated) action and horror flicks, was tapped to referee the long-awaited MonsterVerse throwdown, but he took to the genre with gleeful ease. And, really, why wouldn't he? We were all kids once. The opportunity to make a mega-budget Godzilla and King Kong movie in one fell swoop is something many of us dreamed of as rambunctious eight-year-olds.
And it wasn't just about the kaiju combat! One of the film's most visually thrilling sequences found Kong and the Monarch team exploring the reverse-gravitational expanse of Hollow Earth (which Wingard considered his "'Star Wars' audition'). This realm,...

Franchise animation Kung Fu Panda 4 and creature clash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lead a bumper weekend of 16 new films at the UK-Ireland box office.
Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has the biggest opening of the weekend in 715 sites – a significant jump for the series, after 2008’s Kung Fu Panda (448) and sequels in 2011 (514) and 2016 (585), all through Paramount.
Conversely, the total grosses of each film have dropped, with the first title making £20.4m, followed by £17m and £14.2m for the sequels. All of these were pre-pandemic; number four will look to cross the £10m mark before challenging any of those totals.

There will be many comparisons in the next day or three between Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki’s shockingly beautiful and elegiac epic about a giant lizard triggering nationwide trauma for a country in ruins, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the newest monster smash up between the Big G and the Ape from Skull Island. But right at the top, every reader should recognize this is a fruitless exercise; a contrast as meaningful as pondering the differences between a genuine Oscar winner and a Saturday morning cartoon.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire releases in theaters March 29, 2024.
I hold a special place in my heart for Godzilla (2014) by Gareth Edwards, which remains my favorite film of the MonsterVerse saga. Kong: Skull Island has managed to improve the overall opinion over the years, unlike Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which continues to be a major disappointment even after a couple of rewatches. In 2021, Adam Wingard found the ideal balance between the titanic battles, human storylines, and just the right amount of openly absurd fun in Godzilla vs. Kong. Therefore, excitement levels were high for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Former adversaries, Godzilla and Kong must join forces to fight a mysterious common enemy that emerges from the depths of the Hollow Earth. Meanwhile, the human characters focus on exploring the unknown origins of the Titans, in addition to providing small but valuable assistance in the impending battles.

It’s been nearly 70 years since Godzilla first step foot on the silver screen with Ishiro Honda’s 1954 opus, Gojira. What started as an allegory about the horrors of the atomic bomb and war has since been reimagined myriad times to cover everything from the awesome forces of nature to geopolitical alliances, the absurdities of consumerism to mankind’s inability to curb pollution. Whether Godzilla is a tragic monster, a defender of earth, or children’s role model, there’s no denying the appeal the Big G has to audiences.
After all, it’s damn entertaining to watch a giant monster stomping around the streets of a metropolis and leaving a path of destruction. Sure, American movies like King Kong and The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms primed American audiences for features of this magnitude. Since Kaijus and monsters from various other forms of entertainment and literature have become a staple in the pop culture scene today, the popularity of hulking giants like Godzilla and King Kong has skyrocketed in recent times.

With Godzilla and Kong preparing for a titan-sized team-up in this weekend’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, now seems like as good a time as any to revisit the first time these larger than life monsters crossed paths: 1962’s King Kong vs Godzilla. The third film in both franchises and the first in both franchises to be presented in widescreen and color, this entry was a major turning point for the Godzilla seres in particular and is often credited with keeping the series alive after the disappointing Godzilla Raids Again.
Yet despite its massive influence, the film is also strangely difficult to come by in the West. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the 38th film in the Godzilla franchise and the 13th in the King Kong franchise. Throughout the years, the monsters have become some of the biggest stars in Hollywood — both literally and figuratively.
Dan Stevens, who joins Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry as leads in the film, confirmed the monsters’ star power at the Los Angeles premiere on Monday, joking he approached the CGI creatures “much like standing opposite any great movie star, really. Now that Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire has premiered, the important question is: is it entertaining? While not high art (though the recent Japanese Godzilla films have become more prestigious), audiences sitting down to watch a movie where Kong rides Godzilla while wielding an axe still want it to measure up to a good ol’ time. So, how is it fairing in the early reactions?
