Sarcastic title, but not completely lost touch with reality.

The literal translation of the title of this movie is: Occidental Looking for Death.

Although the title is sarcastic, it is not completely lost tough with reality. Had that girl done what she did during the Cultural Revolution, the title would be very proper because she would have probably be executed as a western spy trying to infiltrate China.

Don't know if this particular incident depicted here in the movie was real or not, but the same thing did happen in real life in the 1980's China, except it was a Canadian or American teenage boy who tried to learn martial arts and he entered via Hong Kong, and his experience was pretty much the same as the French girl depicted in the movie.

Occidental Looking for Teacher

The literal translation of the title is NOT as the previous user commented. It means Occidental Looking for TEACHER -- shi (professor) not si (death). Also the other commentaries are very biased. We have enough misunderstandings already.
