Realistic depiction of the tragic love affair
The literal translation of the title of this film is: the Security Guard.
On the surface, this movie criticizes the traditional Confucian teaching on marriage that emphasize the importance of the families of the marrying couple must have equal status in the society, but in reality, it criticizes the current practice:
The Confucian teaching still dominated Chinese society after the communist takeover, and the only difference is that the status is changed to political background. This was particularly emphasized during the Cultural Revolution. The film made a clever disguise in that it masks the criticism of contemporary Chinese political and social condition under the criticism of the past.
