"The Goodbye Place" is an American black-and-white film that has its 20th anniversary this year. The writer and director is Richard Kelly, who is mostly known for Donnie Darko. This short film we have here is mostly about a young boy who is abused and what happens to him that may or may not be a haven actually. The topic is pretty serious, also the tone of the film, but the story telling aspects are never good enough to let me care for the guy or be particularly interested in the movie. Age may be a mitigating factor for Kelly here, but it's not really enough of a factor to let me say this was a decent rookie effort. i am not really familiar with his later works, especially his breakthrough films, but i genuinely hope he managed to step things up since 1996. I do not recommend "The Goodbye Place". Thumbs down.
