A Tribute to King Kong takes place as part of the The St. Louis International Film Festival Sunday, Nov. 6 beginning at 6:00pm at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium. The first film screened will be the new documentary Long Live The King, which explores the enduring fascination with one of the biggest stars — both literally and figuratively — in Hollywood history: the mighty King Kong. Produced and directed by Frank Dietz and Trish Geiger, the creative team behind the award-winning “Beast Wishes,” the documentary devotes primary attention to the 1933 classic, celebrating the contributions of filmmakers Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack, stars Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, and Bruce Cabot, writer Edgar Wallace, and especially stop-motion innovator Willis O’Brien. But Kong’s legacy is also fully detailed: the sequel “Son of Kong,” the cinematic kin “Mighty Joe Young,” the Dino DeLaurentis and Peter Jackson remakes, even the Japanese versions by Toho Studios.

A former aide to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was shot and killed in New Orleans early Saturday morning in what police believe started as a robbery attempt. Thomas Rolfes, 25, was in the city with his fiancée over the weekend to plan their wedding when he was fatally shot once in the chest near the intersection of Claiborne Avenue and Amelia Street, police said at a news conference on Monday. He was found unresponsive at about 4:30 a.m. on Saturday and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. There were injuries on Rolfe's hands, indicating that there may have been a struggle,...

Show of hands if you saw That Scandal twist coming. What, no one? We didn’t think so.
At the midway point of the ABC drama’s fall finale on Thursday, Olivia was escorted into a private medical room and then underwent an apparent abortion. That was followed by an epic, seemingly irreparable quarrel between Liv and Fitz, after which she moved out of the White House.

For a city that is the home of a 16-time NBA champion, is one of just two markets to house a second NBA team and features a state university that has won 11 Ncaa basketball championships, Los Angeles doesn't always get the respect it deserves as a hoops Mecca. You could throw out a starting five of current All-Stars including Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Paul George, Tyson Chandler and Kwai Leonard and the media and fans would still find themselves hyping New York or Chicago before sunny Southern California. The new documentary "The Drew: No Excuse, Just Produce" isn't intended to rectify that misconception, but it provides a lot of historical fodder to support the argument that basketball's real hot spot is Los Angeles. Directed by both former NBA and UCLA player Baron Davis and newcomer Chad Gordon, "No Excuse, Just Produce" is a love letter to The Drew League, a...

Jackie Earle Haley, the last actor to wear and use Freddy Krueger’s iconic finger knives on screen, highlights the list of notable performers who will voice characters in Bethesda’s upcoming survival horror title, The Evil Within. Haley, who also played Rorschach in Hollywood’s adaptation of The Watchmen, has been outed as the game’s main villain, Ruvik. His opponent, Detective Sebastian Castellanos, will be portrayed by Anson Mount of Hell on Wheels fame.
Dexter fans will also be happy to hear that Jennifer Carpenter — who is most famous for her role as the serial killer’s sister, Debra Morgan — will appear in the game as Detective Castellanos’ partner, Juli Kidman. She rounds out an impressive cast that will lend an air of credibility to the brand new IP.
Released alongside this news is a trailer that mixes gruesome gameplay footage with shots of the aforementioned actors doing their thing.

By the looks of it, the Tribeca Film Festival might finally be growing out of their awkward teenage phase and moving into a new era where the nab more than just Sundance and SXSW festival rejects. Artistic Director Frederic Boyer has managed to nab some noteworthy American indie projects such as Lou Howe’s Gabriel (see pic above), Keith Miller’s Five Star, Adam Rapp’s Loitering with Intent, and Tristan Patterson’s Electric Slide.

"Under the Dome" has gotten pretty exciting the last couple episodes. Read on to find out what we can look forward to going into the season finale next week.
We'll confess -- the show has been a bit of a slow burn, especially compared to the book. Now, the book covers less than a week, so obviously a show that is going to at least have a second season has to last longer than that. So, at times, the show has been a little slow, a little meandering, a little ridiculous (we still can't get over that appliance truck that crashed into the water tower -- what was it Doing on the road? Refrigerator emergency?)
However, last week and this week have more than made up for some of the slower offerings this summer. Big Jim is morphing into the villain we know him to be from the novel and it's been delicious to watch.

Maxine has been a busy little beaver on "Under the Dome," what with organizing her giant "Mad Max"-style fight club and black market area.
Big Jim/Barbie/Maxine
As Maxine says, it's been nine days under the dome. And the missile was, what, a few days into the dome coming down? So it's been, at most, six days since everybody was taking shelter at the cement factory.
So Maxine's been quite the industrious little scalawag in the ensuing six days, charging people goods in order to get into the Cement Factory, where they can trade up by fighting each other. She blackmails Barbie into fighting, but he throws it, which she was expecting.
Meanwhile, while Barbie is investigating fight club, Big Jim is busy investigating Bird Island in East Lake, where he finds Maxine's mom Agatha (nee Claire), who reveals why Max won't deal in prostitution -- because Agatha's...

Hello again, Dome fans! More domes than ever on Under the Dome this week, thanks to Angie’s heretofore-unrevealed passion for snowglobes and yet another trip to the smaller Dome, which has been nicknamed “The Mini-Dome” by Joe. Early in the episode, Julia mused on the curious coincidence that a woman named Alice died right as a baby named Alice was born. She said, “Circle of Life.” Don’t you mean Dome of life? Let’s run down the list of this week’s Most Valuable Domes:
5. Angie’s SnowDomes. Since everyone knows that the best cure for the my-mom-is-dead...

Under the Dome continued on the crazy train in "Thicker Than Water," with stories all over the place. And none of them were particularly compelling.
In Chester's Mill, it's been just over a week since the Dome appeared over the town. But the show, of course, has been on for two months now. Are you drawn to any of the characters? Do you care about them? I wish I did and I really do want to... but I just don't - and that's a problem.
Julia and Barbie had chemistry immediately and the secret about what happened to her husband was an obstacle for them to overcome. That situation resolved itself with the foundation of truth and then a few lies. With almost a snap of the fingers, it was resolved. Now, they are a charming couple, but with little substance.
Meanwhile, the teen pairing of Norrie and Joe started...

The dome is still up after a failed missile attack, but the people of Chester’s Mill are starting to panic. With a dwindling water supply, all hell breaks loose.
Things go from bad to worse when a runaway truck crashes and knocks out a key water pipe on the July 29 episode of Under The Dome. Plus, the lake is full of methane and the town’s insulin supply is running out. Life under the dome doesn’t look promising.
‘Under The Dome’ Recap — ‘The Endless Thirst’: Julie & Barbie Kiss
An odd screech running across broadcast frequencies alarms Julia (Rachelle Lefevre) and Dodee (Jolene Purdy). Realizing that the signal is coming from inside the dome, they set out on a mission to find its origin and see if they can restore all broadcast frequencies.
Angie (Britt Robertson) manages to escape from Junior (Again!). However, when Junior (Alexander Koch) alarms his dad,...

When the Dome appeared over Chester's Mill, deaths began to pile up from both the force field and then from the residents. Last Monday, they faced a new deadly threat through the spread of Menigitis. On "Blue on Blue," the threats expanded even further and now include the U.S. military.
Panic ensued when the military pulled out, but only a day later they returned and brought with them the residents' loved ones for a visit. These meetings created more conflict, but also provided answers.
Julia received word from Peter that he was sorry for leaving her behind and in financial ruin. Sad for her, but excellent for viewers. Maybe now she can move on and develop a relationship with Barbie. They were immediately at ease with each other and have amazing chemistry with each other.
She forgave Barbie for his misrepresentation with the simple gesture of taking his hand.

"Under the Dome's" action heats up on Monday's "Blue on Blue," when the military decides to try a drastic measure to get rid of the dome that is encasing Chester's Mill.
Here are some things to look forward to:
The butterfly effect comes to the dome, though in a more literal way than the normal meaning of "the butterfly effect." But it spurs the U.S. military into action, leaving the town wondering what may become of them.It doesn't take long for Junior to step into his role as Deputy Junior -- someone sure likes strappin' on a gun. Several more puzzle pieces are dropped into place about Barbie, while Julie gets a visit at the dome from her sister-in-law, Mary, who has a message from Peter. Line of the episode: "I'm excited to meet your folks. Can't wait to tell 'em you're shacking up with an underage girl and two lesbians.

When I heard that The CW was developing a prequel to Sex & The City that focused on Carrie Bradshaw's introduction to Manhattan in the mid-80's, I was ... wary.
In the first place, The Carrie Diaries changed Carrie's backstory. In Satc she spoke about how her father walked out on her and her mother when she was young, and she never saw him again. In Tcd, her mother has just died, and her father is trying to raise Carrie and her sullen sister (who we also never heard of in Satc) by himself.
That I can handle, but the fact that it takes place in the 80's was a potential deal breaker. I try to steer clear of any TV show or movie set in the 80's because they usually get it so ... wrong. It's either so eye-rollingly obvious or annoyingly anachronistic (Excuse me! Your movie takes place in early 1983, but features "Karma Chameleon,...

"I want to thank three persons,” said Michel Hazanavicius, accepting the 2012 Best Picture Oscar for “The Artist.” “I want to thank Billy Wilder, I want to thank Billy Wilder and I want to thank Billy Wilder.” He wasn’t the first director to namecheck Wilder in an acceptance speech. In 1994, Fernando Trueba, accepting the Foreign Language Film Oscar for "Belle Epoque" quipped, "I would like to believe in God in order to thank him. But I just believe in Billy Wilder... so, thank you Mr. Wilder." Wilder reportedly called the next day "Fernando? It's God."
So just what exactly was it that inspired these men to expend some of the most valuable seconds of speechifying airtime they'll ever know, to tip their hats to Wilder? And can we bottle it?

Got a concept for you. Ready?
Patron superheroes.
You’re lovin’ it already, aren’t you?
For those of you who have never been Catholic, here’s a quick definition of patron saint, via the invaluable Wikipedia: “A patron saint is a saint who is regarded as the intercessor and advocate in heaven of a nation, place, craft, activity, class, clan, family, or person…(They) are believed to be able to intercede for the needs of heir special charges.”
I mean, when you think about it superheroes and patron saints have a lot in common. Both are dedicated to helping the good guys (though the definition of “good guys” is liable to change) and both have powers that help the aforementioned good guys. You’re Lois Lane falling from a window, you yell and here comes Superman to prevent you from splatting. You’re a Giants fan, you want your...

Red Tails seems to be a Hollywood war movie on its surface, but it offers much more than the expected action sequences. It’s the story of The Tuskegee Airmen, a group of black pilots who fought in World War II as part of a Fighter and Bombardment escort Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps. At the time, the American military was racially segregated and these black soldiers were subject to much discrimination, both within and outside the army. Before President Truman integrated the armed forces, black pilots were given the most rundown planes (“from Uncle Sam’s junkyard”), the fewest promotions, and the most dangerous (or boring) assignments. Despite these adversities, they trained and flew with distinction. Throughout the course of the Red Tails they must overcome not only the racism, but also conflicts in their own trust and tragic losses amongst friends. It’s square, old-fashioned melodramatic entertainment to be dure,...

On Saturday, March 26th, the Directors Guild of America hosted another event in celebration of their 75th Anniversary. Last month, they honored George Lucas with a screening of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) and discussion between Lucas and Christopher Nolan. This time, the DGA hosted a panel honoring Lucas's benefactor, Francis Ford Coppola. Unlike the Lucas event, the DGA did not screen one of Coppola's many feature films, but asked three directors, David O'Russell (Three Kings, The Fighter), Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Thirteen), and Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood) to prepare short reels of some of their favorite scenes as a spring board for discussion. Each director's selections were fairly classical while also featuring some oddities: Hardwicke picked ten minutes from Apocalypse Now (1979), P.T. Anderson chose a selection from The Conversation (1974), my personal favorite of Coppola's films, and an odder choice, Youth Without Youth...

After an unexplained one-week hiatus (what is this, The Sopranos? Oh Man It Kind Of Is), Top Chef is Back for Episode 8, “An Offer They Can’t Refuse”. What awesome Quickfire are they gonna throw at us to make up for lost thyme? Ut ohhh: Guest Judge Isaac Mizrahi. Padma torturedly explains, “Just as a runway show is designed to attract the buyer, a plate is designed to entice the palate.” Meaning, we had to have Isaac Mizrahi on for some dumb cross promotional thing our producers agreed to and after this sentence let us never speak of this again. Angelo is excited, saying “Two of my favorite things are food and fashion.” Haha, of course they are. We know what some of your other favorite things are too, and spelling “crocodile” is not one of them: This week’s Quickfire will only focus on aesthetics, and whoever has the...

It’s Fashion Week in New York, and that serves as inspiration for the Quickfire Challenge on Top Chef, with food as the art form.
While Padma plugs her jewelry line, Isaac Mizrahi makes for a rather controversial judge, snapping his fingers at Dale, throwing in a random comparison to Charles Manson. While it all seems like a thinly-veiled promotion for Fashion Week, at least Mizrahi makes for interesting TV, wouldn’t you agree?
Quickfire Challenge
With Mizrahi as the guest judge for this episode, the judges are instructed to create a dish with winning presentation, par for the course. The twist? Padma and Isaac will not be tasting it; it’s purely for aesthetics.
The judges are creative as usual, although removing the taste component of food definitely throw them off. Tre creates an abstract piece of “dots” and slices of salmon that’s oddly pretty, but quite simple.

The Lions win again! And the increasingly well-dressed denizens of East Dillon are ready to party. Too bad they don't have anywhere to go.
Wait, this is "Friday Night Lights," so Buddy Garrity (Brad Leland) opened a bar just for the occasion. And it has TVs, which is awesome, because though the Lions still might not be ranked, but they do warrant aerial photography on network TV.
When the celebrating is done, Vince (Michael B. Jordan) returns home to find his mother cleaning the apartment. This can't be good. The lack of bags under her eyes tells us she's not back on the pipe, so it must be something else. His father's been paroled. A-whaaaa?
We're already getting misty and the opening titles haven't even started. Oh, wait. There they are. Time for a 42-second jam band induced emotional breakdown.
Turns out that trashy redhead rally girl who got wasted...

As we close the second season of Lie To Me, Cal Lightman is having a very bad day. First he discovers Emily and Rick are a little more than friends, and then he finds a friend of his own – old journalist pal Julie – has been murdered in a hotel room where she was meeting with a source investigating a high-profile councilman.
Smartly, Cal doesn’t poke around, just waits for the cops to arrive (preserving evidence on TV? what’s that?). However, he doesn’t get the cops, but the FBI. Ben turns up, along with his boss, played by Conor O’Farrell (who will always be the child molester from the “Suspect” episode of Without A Trace to me, unfortunately). The two FBI agents allow Cal to sit in on their interview of the congressman, played by another perpetual guest star, Brian Goodman (Day Break, Leverage, Lost, Criminal Minds...

HollywoodNews.com: Sophia Bush of ‘One Tree Hill’ traveled to the Gulf to see the devastation of the recent oil spill and was moved to action by what she witnessed.
Now, the actress, who is involved with the fundraising site Crowdrise, will be running a half marathon in November to benefit the Gulf.
Below is a blog she recently posted about this experience:
So … running. When I think about running my brain turns into an athletic commercial. I see feet pounding the pavement in high tech sneakers. Dry fit gear comes to mind immediately. Vibrant colors, taught muscles, and music with great bass. I see beads of sweat forming along the runner’s brow. I envision fists pumping, chests heaving, and the sound of an elevated heart beat.
I do not, however, see my face on the athlete in my imagined montage. I don’t see myself running anywhere. Don’t get me wrong,...

The Apprentice star Karren Brady has told Hello magazine that she regrets going back to work so soon after her baby was born.
It seems that Karren was back at work just three days after having her daughter, Sophia, who’s now 14.
Karren told the magazine, “It was a mistake and most people would look on it with shock, as they should.
“When you’re young and in a career, you don’t think it will last a lifetime…
“You think it will slip through your fingers if you take time out.”
And Karren, who’s the vice chairman of West Ham football club revealed that she’s only been on holiday three times in the last 15 years.
She said, “On the rare occasion I did go away, I’d always be working, on my laptop or BlackBerry, and almost never left the room.”

According to Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios – The Howling Commandos will appear in the Joe Johnston directed, The First Avenger: Captain America starring Chris Evans….but they may not be specifically called The Howling Commandos.
According to Devin over at Chud.
“‘The characters will be there as part of the larger Marvel Universe,’ Feige told me. One character he would confirm was Gabe Jones, a black guy known for carrying his trumpet into battle.”
So, who are The Howling Commandos?
The first group of Howling Commandos was an elite special unit formed in World War II. The original team consisted of Nick Fury, Corporal Thaddeus Aloysius Cadwallander “Dum Dum” Dugan, Private Gabriel Jones, Private Robert “Rebel” Ralston, Private Dino Manelli, Private Isadore “Izzy” Cohen and Private Jonathan “Junior” Juniper who was killed in action after the first few issues. A real life "Gossip Girl" series is coming to the small screen. On Thursday, April 10, Bravo Media's Executive Vice President and General Manager, Frances Berwick, announced that the television network has picked up "NYC Prep", a documentary series which has similar prep school-set as The CW's popular TV series.
The new documentary is billed to chronicle the lives of a group of six affluent teenagers in Manhattan's social circle. "Bravo continues to intrigue audiences with real-life depictions of relatable characters who live in exclusive worlds," Berwick explained. "We'll watch as these teenagers manage the ups and downs of not only being in high school, but what comes along with growing up as part of New York's elite."
Through press release, it is further promised that "NYC Prep" will present a world where "everyone's beautiful and everyone's connected" as well as the price behind the privilege the kids have. The new...

Some homegrown interloping mixes with a strong international showing this week to give an overall balance to what's playing at your local multiplex. Comic book fans can salivate over "Watchmen," arthouse fans can enjoy a Louis Garrel double bill, and a Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse-inspired serial killer movie bridges the gap.
