Japanese slammer drama has curiosity value.
Mozjoukine1 February 2004
These series programmers were occasionally more revealing than the prestige material that came in through consular distribution or commercial exploitation.

The shock in this one comes with the sub plot about the menace in the prison not being drugs or gang bangs but athlete's foot - with a big close up of peeling skin that would never have made it into a Western production or even something from Akira Kurosawa.

Otherwise it's competent and ordinary, made by people we never get to hear about and who aren't the least interested in what I might think about their work. This is probably why the piece plays in a way that isn't familiar.
