Nia Vardalos wanted to tackle political themes in 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3'.The 60-year-old actress has written and directed the new romantic comedy, in which she reprises the role of Toula Portokalos, and did not shy away from the topic of immigration.Nia told Parade magazine: "This is the most political movie I've ever written."I said, 'I'm going to write about this in a way that people will understand we are all humans.' And it's unfair that people are forced from their homes, pushed out by famine or war or loss of income, and pushed into a society that is not necessarily welcoming them."So I wrote about it in the new movie, interwoven as part of a giant braid of the bigger story. Nobody wants to be preached to, but we're all immigrants, and that's my message. That's the theme of the third movie."Nia...

Toni Collette may just have that extra mommy sense!
The actress reveals in an episode of People’s Mamarazzi that she hasn’t let her children see one of her more famous films because she thinks it’s too frightening for them at their current ages.
“There’s no way in the world my kids have seen The Sixth Sense,” she says of son Arlo Robert, 6, and daughter Sage Florence, 9½. “It would scare the s— out of them.”
Collette was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in the supernatural thriller, which she says her kids will “eventually” see when they get older.

Film financiers are about to give consideration to a movie package that would see Tom Hanks star in and produce a cinematic adaptation of the 2013 novel The Circle, by David Eggers. With James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) originating the project as writer and director, producer Gary Goetzman would join Tom Hanks behind the scenes.
The story could not be more timely, as it sees a young woman named Mae Holland join a giant internet company called The Circle. As a huge corporation, it creates increasingly sophisticated technology, which encroaches further and further into the privacy of every citizen, in the name of transparency. As some of her colleagues are gradually revealed to have motives that are less than innocent, Mae must take steps to prevent a terrible future.
The project is an interesting choice for Hanks, who recently finished filming an adaptation of another Eggers novel – A Hologram For The King.

"In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes," it's claimed Andy Warhol once said. Some stars shine much brighter than others, though, and in the case of Hollywood we often see actors hit big early before disappearing without trace.
Brandon Routh, who delivered a sensitive and assured turn as the Man of Steel in 2006's Superman Returns, is one such example. Routh never quite got the breaks he deserved after landing that life-changing role, so it's nice to see him back in the superhero game with an upcoming role as Atom in Arrow.
Digital Spy takes a look back at a handful of stars who couldn't escape their one big role.
Brandon Routh
Plucked from relative obscurity to lead Bryan Singer's lavish Superman sequel, Routh impressively channelled Christopher Reeve on his big screen debut but found leading man roles difficult to come by in the aftermath.

Here’s a thought to make January more bearable: February is worse. Heh!
Yikes. We’re in dire need of comedy this month, and here are 10 gay tweets (and an extra one from me) designed to make this month lovable. I also tacked on a tweet from Patton Oswalt about Neneh Cherry that sent me into Drugstore Cowboy-type convulsions.
1. Richard Lawson jokes by not joking at all.
Liz Cheney is dropping out of the race to spend less time with her family.

Greg Grunberg's production company, BandWagon, recently produced a clever commercial for Promescent, a penis enhancement product. Althought we first noticed Greg in the female buddy film "Connie and Carla," he is, of course, best known for starring as Matt Parkman on the NBC television series Heroes, a series that catapulted the actor into the top tier of TV. Grunberg has also appeared on House and Love Bites, and he's been a voice-over actor in Star Trek and also voiced the FBI agent Ethan Thomas in the video game Condemned: Criminal Origins. Acting is not his only area of expertise. Grunberg's imagination and entrepreneurial drive has found success in the world of film and video production and apps like Yowza!!

Chicago – It is with mixed emotions that one regards the tenth anniversary edition of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” On one hand, it evokes memories of the crowded theaters that guffawed in delight during the film’s year-long theatrical run. On the other hand, it serves as a bitter reminder of the failed career it had promised to launch.
It was through serendipitous circumstances that Nia Vardalos’s affectionate stage show about her quirky Greek family was transformed into one of the most financially successful indies of all time. On the film’s 2002 audio commentary (included on this disc), Vardalos said that it was the most difficult for her to play the sad scenes because she was so blissfully happy offscreen. Her giddy excitement proved to be infectious in the film, but in all of her subsequent screen efforts, the actress seemed to mistake a chipper demeanor for a performance.

Actress Nia Vardalos said she can't even get a latte without someone hitting her up with an idea for a sequel to her 2002 surprise hit movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
"Over the years, I've heard from everybody about what the sequel should be. People next to me at Starbucks would say, 'hey, let me tell you my idea' and I'd be like 'hey, I'm just trying to get a cup of coffee'," she said.
It's no wonder.
Released in 2002, Vardalos's "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is the most profitable independent film of all time, earning almost $369 million -- or a return of over 61 times on investment, according to CNBC.com.
Now a special 10th Anniversary Edition is coming to Blu-Ray, slated for release Tuesday. The edition includes a DVD version and a Digital Copy of the movie and features deleted scenes as well as a 30-minute retrospective with Vardalos and co-star John Corbett.

Alec Mapa and friends on the Allure of the Seas
Alec Mapa, everyone's favorite Gaysian sweetheart, is a bundle of contractions. His standup is about as raunchy and personal as you can imagine, with graphic jokes about his sex life and even bathroom habits. But he's also a great dad. As we met aboard the Atlantis Events cruise to talk about fatherhood, comedy, and Ugly Betty, he showed up holding a MacBook at an awkward angle, trying to use the ship's flaky WiFi to video conference with his son about his behavior at school.
AfterElton: We are on the Allure, and we are talking to Alec Mapa, who was kind enough to get out of bed early to talk to us.
Alec Mapa: I know – it's miraculous.
Ae: We're huge fans at AfterElton. We haven't seen a lot of you on TV since Ugly Betty, but that was such an iconic role.

Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Larry Crowne Transformers 3: Still $30 Million Behind Transformers 2 In other box-office news, the Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts vehicle Larry Crowne opened — at no. 4 — with a measly $15.74m at 2,973 theaters over the four-day 4th of July weekend, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The Tom Hanks-directed romantic comedy will have trouble matching its $30 million budget at the domestic box office — let alone recouping it. Nia Vardalos, Hanks' Larry Crowne co-writer, hasn't been very lucky since her 2002 sleeper hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding: Connie and Carla cumed at $8m in the Us/Canada in 2004; I Hate Valentine's Day took in a minuscule $11,004 in 2009; and now comes the widely lambasted Larry Crowne. Faring even worse, Monte Carlo, starring teen idol and reported Justin Bieber paramour Selena Gomez, drew only $8.75m at 2,743 sites in its first four days out. The romantic comedy cost a reported $20m.

Just last month we learned that Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts were reteaming for a new comedy called Larry Crowne, about "a man forced to reinvent himself and find a new career as he navigates the second act of his life." Tom Hanks wrote the script, and is gearing up to direct -- his first feature since That Thing You Do! all the way back in 1996. But there's a little more to the story, it seems.
Deadline Hollywood reports that Universal has grabbed the domestic distribution rights to the feature, and attached along with this news is the following tidbit: "Tom also wrote the screenplay with Nia Vardalos. (He hatched the idea in 2006 under the title of Talk of the Town, he got a first draft from Nia Vardalos.)" Since then, the pair have been working on the script together. You might remember, that he and Vardalos go back some...

With The Princess and the Frog recently out, we got to thinking back over some of the other Disney classics, trying to decide which one was the most gay. I say it was Mulan due to the cross-dressing/gender issues theme and the voices of both Harvey Fierstein and George Takei in the cast. He says it was The Little Mermaid because the design for the sea-witch was based on Divine, the drag artist, and Howard Ashman wrote the songs, including the gay-resonant "Part of That World". The resounding failure of My Big Fat Greek Life, the short-lived spin-off of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Connie And Carla proved that the public’s unlikely love affair with funnywoman Nia Vardalos was more of a drunken, embarrassing, instantly regrettable one-night stand. But for a glorious moment, My Big Fat Greek Wedding made Vardalos a pop-culture Cinderella, a left-field box-office sensation, and the recipient of vast mountains of press, not to mention an Oscar nomination. Nonetheless, before long, Vardalos’ gown turned back into a heap of rags. So she, director Donald Petrie, and screenwriter Mike Reiss (who co-created ...

About A Boy star Toni Collette has shocked fans by turning her back on movies to launch a singing career. The 31-year-old decided to quit acting to make her first album, after the devastating reviews of her film Connie And Carla and she's relieved she has completed her last two films - the drama In Her Shoes, by LA Confidential director Curtis Hanson, and comedy The Last Shot, co-starring Matthew Broderick and Alec Baldwin. Collette explains, "I've been writing music for more than ten years and I think if I don't actually record it, I'll go insane. But I don't want to be one of those crass actors turned singers or indeed singers turned actors. There are two sides to the coin, the notion that if you're a creative person why should it be funneled through one avenue, why shouldn't you leap over into other areas? Then there's the idea you stick to what you do because you're an embarrassment. But I certainly won't be baring my midriff. I won't be purring, there'll be no little sex kitten thing going on, it's just music that is part of me and I want to get it out."...

David Duchovny's directorial debut has landed at Lions Gate Films, sources said. The indie outfit is working on a deal to acquire all North American distribution rights to the coming-of-age tale House of D, which recently had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. Produced by Richard Lewis, Jane Rosenthal and Bob Yari, the film stars Duchovny alongside wife Tea Leoni, Robin Williams, Zelda Williams, Anton Yelchin and Erykah Badu. House of D is described as an emotional fable about New York and the power of friendship. It tells the multilayered story of Tommy (Duchovny), a man who is coming to terms with his past and his present and resolving his relationships with the people who helped make him who he is. Much of the story is told through flashbacks with Robin Williams playing a janitor and best friend of the younger Tommy (Yelchin) and Leoni starring as Tommy's mother. Lions Gate will likely release the film this fall, sources said. Lewis' Ovation Entertainment financed and produced the film along with Yari's Bob Yari Prods. Duchovny is onscreen in the Universal Pictures romantic musical comedy Connie and Carla opposite Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette.

Actor David Duchovny wants to quit Hollywood for a new life in Vancouver - so he can prove to locals how much he loves the Canadian city. Duchovny upset Vancouver residents in 1997 when he joked about the coastal city on comedian Conan O'Brien's show - prompting rumors that filming on his old series The X-Files was being moved to Los Angeles because he hated being in Canada. But after making a visit to Vancouver after a long absence to film his new comedy Connie And Carla, Duchovny admits he'd happily move north of the border. He says, "I made a joke about how it rained all the time there and I became like public enemy number one for a while. I'm starting to look for land up there to buy because I apologized all I could and it seems the only thing I can do is actually move up there to prove that I love it, which I do. So I will stop at nothing to actually show that I love Vancouver and I will move there if I have to and live the rest of my life in Vancouver. It's a beautiful city."...

David Duchovny will star opposite Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette in Spyglass Entertainment's music-driven Connie and Carla. Michael Lembeck (The Santa Clause 2) is directing the project, which is aimed to begin production the first week of May. The project is described as Some Like It Hot meets Tootsie. The female buddy comedy is about two working-class dinner-theater singers (Vardalos and Collette) who are forced to go undercover in Los Angeles as drag queens. Duchovny plays Jeff, who, while searching for his drag-queen brother in West Hollywood, falls for Vardalos' character. Spyglass toppers Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum are producing with production president Jonathan Glickman. Vardalos is executive producing. The company, which brings its own financing to the table and funds its own development, also is handling international distribution rights. Universal Pictures is distributing the project domestically. Universal production president Mary Parent and senior vp production Donna Langley are overseeing, as is Spyglass production vp Stephanie Striegel. Duchovny is repped by CAA and Melanie Greene Management.
