The New Girlfriend
Written & Directed by François Ozon
France, 2014
The latest from prolific French auteur François Ozon opens on a somber note as Claire (Anaïs Demoustier) recounts her lifelong friendship with the deceased Laura (Isild Le Besco), whose untimely death has left her grieving husband David (Romain Duris) alone with their infant daughter. Shortly after the funeral, Claire checks in on the widower and finds him all made up, wearing Laura’s dress and a blonde wig to boot. Promising not to tell her husband Gilles (Raphaël Personnaz) about David’s cross-dressing, Claire finds herself entering uncharted territory with her late friend’s husband and no one to confide in. Beautifully shot with an eye for the little details that we associate with femininity, the film is as much an exploration of the rituals and meanings of female friendships as it is of gender,...

Like any filmmaker, New Zealand-based Australian David Gould wants his action-thriller The Cure to reach a wide audience- but he.s concluded that releasing the film in cinemas in either country is not cost-effective.
The film will premiere on February 6 at The Embassy Cinema in Wellington and will then be available on DVD, VOD platforms Vimeo and IndieReign and pay-tv.s Rialto Channel.
.We are self-distributing in New Zealand as I think that theatrical releases don.t really work for indie films,. says Gould, who worked for Weta Digital on the visual effects of numerous films including two editions of The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Adventures of Tintin.
.We aren.t doing a theatrical release because we don.t feel that the expense really brings the corresponding returns. The general public want to see the film in a way that is convenient for them,...

"The Spectacular Now" screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber have become purveyors of coming-of-age films, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
"I have discovered in every single thing we've done, be it broad comedy versus teen drama, they're almost all coming-of-age stories in their own way," Neustadter, who also co-wrote the upcoming adaptation for "The Fault In Our Stars" with Weber, told HuffPost Entertainment. "It's people having their eyes opened by a relationship they come into contact with, and that makes them see themselves differently than they did before. I don't know what that says about us, but certainly the underlying thread of all the things we work on is somebody comes of age at some point."
Added a joking Weber: "I think it says that we are incredibly immature."

Labor Day: This is not a love story. Kate Winslet plays a single mother who, along with her son (Gattlin Griffith), is apparently held hostage by escaped fugitive Josh Brolin. But are they hostages or helpers? The first image from Labor Day leaves things vague and unsettling. Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Young Adult) directed and adapted the 2009 novel by Joyce Maynard for the screen. The movie is due in theaters on December 25. [EW.com] Paranormal Activity: We won't be seeing a new scary Paranormal Activity movie in time for Halloween this year, but to make up for it, Paramount will be releasing Two entries in the series in 2014. First up is the Latino-themed spin-off Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, which was formerly titled The Oxnard Tapes; that will be...

The poster of Angel says, ‘This is not a love story. This is a story about love’. Now, we wonder how the two sentences mean differently. Anyway, Angel is Choreographer-turned-director Ganesh Acharya’s third directorial venture after Swami and Money Hai To Honey Hai. The ‘story about love’ marks the debut of Sanjay Dutt’s nephew Nilesh Sahay along with Maddalsa Sharma.

Blue Valentine is a powerful, haunting, decisive, and polarizing film that's sure to spark heated debate. Be careful, dear reader, this is not a date film. Under no circumstances should you watch this with your significant other. Blue Valentine is bound to destroy relationships. Comparisons to 500 Days of Summer are inevitable. The initial set up and core story of the film is essentially the same and Valentine even uses similar plot devices.
"This is not a love story."
Blue Valentine is a deconstruction of a relationship gone wrong and the entire genre of romance pictures. Like Summer, it jumps back and forth at different points within the relationship documenting both the blissful beginning and bitter end.
The main difference between Valentine and Summer, is that Valentine fulfills on its promise. Ultimately, 500 Days of Summer becomes a traditional Hollywood romantic comedy. While there were poignant moments within that film, its ending...

The real focus here should be on the discussion, and so I will just provide some brief sketches of central issues from my reading and from the blogs and comments other readers have shared. I'm as curious as anyone to see where this goes ...
One of the primary topics of discussion has to be the character of Humbert Humbert. We experience almost the entire novel through his highly subjective, stylized, and unreliable narration. Nabokov seems to have taken up the challenge of trying to see how far he could push the horribleness of Hh and still get us to identify with the character. Was he successful? Did you find yourself seduced into sympathizing with Humbert? Did you catch yourself almost rooting for him at times? That is not to say you would ever excuse or condone his actions -- the book is not about defending pedophilia -- but it does...

Happy Valentine's Day, kids. Hope you've all got loved ones to squeeze today, and have better things planned than to see schmaltzy, unchallenging romance flicks like, er, Valentine's Day. Submitted for your approval is a list of movies in the spirit of love that aren't your typical rom-coms or melodramas—the unusual suspects with something a little strange accompanying the couplings.
Rather than just list movies with romance between quirky characters, though, since many people would be quick to name unconventional couples like Harold and Maude or Bonnie and Clyde, how about we seek the more trying scenarios? Here are some movies that attain sweet, robust romance even in situations that are normally hard to swallow. But you don't need to make sense of love to get it.

Oasis (2002)
Why it's weird? It begins with rape.
In most relationships, when the man rapes the woman, what follows is usually the end.
