Christopher Nolan always aims big, and his latest project is no exception. Renowned for his mind-bending stories and blockbuster success, Nolan is now bringing Greek mythology to life with The Odyssey.
You know, Homer’s ancient epic—the one that’s about gods, monsters, and Odysseus taking the scenic route home for a decade. Well, Nolan’s tackling it with a film that has a million-dollar price tag. It’s so massive, it makes Interstellar and Oppenheimer feel like indie flicks.
Christopher Nolan
The Odyssey is a “mythic action epic” that’ll use groundbreaking IMAX film technology to bring Homer’s sweeping tale to life. If anyone can pull this off, it’s Nolan. But how does The Odyssey’s budget stack up against Nolan’s past films (Interstellar and Oppenheimer)? Let’s break it down!
What is the budget for The Odyssey?

Christopher Nolan isn't pulling any punches with his next movie project. Adapting Homer's The Odyssey is a massive undertaking, and it looks like Nolan has ensured the production budget will cover that.
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey reportedly has a $250 million price tag (per Puck). Only two out of Nolan's 12 films crossed that $200 million mark, Tenet ($200 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($250 million). If anything, the update hints at the scale of his next project, which is fitting for an adaptation of Homer's epic. Details on the movie are still scarce save for its premise and release date. "Christopher Nolan's next film The Odyssey is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology," per Universal's announcement. "The film brings Homer's foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026."

The Return captured the intensity of the last part of Homer's Odyssey, in large part thanks to the portrayal of the Greek figure by Ralph Fiennes. As Odysseus, Fiennes was as fierce as any superhero in modern cinema while simultaneously demonstrating how love can be the ultimate motivator.
The Return wasn't the first adaptation of a Homeric epic to big and small screens, but it differed from any previous attempts. Decades ago, Helen of Troy (1956), The Trojan Women (1971), and The Odyssey (1997) similarly tried — and failed — to do justice to the Homeric figures. Troy (2004) with Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, and others did present the Trojan War, albeit with a questionable amount of dedication to the Iliad.
The Return and Ralph Fiennes triumphed in its focus on Odysseus and tacit refusal to get lost in the larger story. This got me thinking — why not do more of this? Homer's...

James Bond has been played by some iconic actors, but there are plenty of other classic performers who could have easily been definitive in the role themselves. The early James Bond films established the tone and style of the series, which continues well into the 21st century. While discussions are still being held at the time of this writing over who will replace Daniel Craig in the upcoming James Bond 26 following his swan song in No Time to Die, those kinds of debates have been waged for decades.
Even looking back at the era of Sean Connery's James Bond films, several classically trained actors of the stage and screen would have made fitting additions to the franchise. Many of them were even actively considered or offered the part, but all ultimately turned it down for various reasons. Still, it's worth looking back at some of the most interesting classic...

Historical epics have experienced periods of immense appeal and long stretches with little action, but many outstanding films in the genre have gone under the radar. Films like "Helen of Troy," "Julius Caesar," and "The New World" are examples of historical epics with strong narratives and exceptional performances that deserve more attention. "The Bounty," a 1984 remake of "Mutiny on the Bounty," is an entertaining classic with an impressive cast, including Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, and features fantastic performances.

Welcome to Wtf Happened to Troy? If we’re talking about the best historical cinematic epics of all time, what are the first few titles that leap to mind? Kubrick’s Spartacus? Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia? Maybe Gibson’s Braveheart? Whatever the answer is, chances are, despite earning half a billion dollars worldwide, Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy isn’t likely the first movie that tops the list. But why is that? After all, Troy was not only a monumental box office hit but also fared pretty well among critics and general filmgoers alike. Moreover, with Homer’s timeless tale of The Iliad guiding the way, it would seem as though Troy would resonate longer in the public’s collective consciousness and rank among the all-time best and most durable biographical epics. Yet, despite the impressive size, scale, and scope of the big-screen spectacle that chronicles the intense war between...

A fire broke out at Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios on Monday afternoon (Aug. 1) and was extinguished by three teams of firefighters.
The fire broke out in the area where a set depicting renaissance Florence was housed and which was being decommissioned, destroying parts of it. It also disrupted the shoot for Netflix’s sequel to Charlize Theron film “The Old Guard” and threatened the “Big Brother” house.
“The fire has been extinguished. There are no injuries, no poisoning, no serious material damage,” Cinecittà Studios spokesperson Marlon Pellegrini told Afp in a statement.
The cause of the fire is not immediately clear, though conditions are dry and potentially incendiary in Italy, which is undergoing a heatwave.
The studio has history with fire. In 2007, flames engulfed warehouses housing sets for HBO/BBC series “Rome” and 32,000 square feet of studio space were destroyed. And in 2012, some parts of Studio 5, where Federico Fellini...

No, it’s not the story of the 18th President of the United States. Kirk Douglas must have been a big hit in Rome, starring in one of the first and best of the Italo epic ‘classics,’ before the musclemen cornered the market. Homer’s tale of the husband who took ten years to come back from Troy is given real star power, a splendid production and best of all, an intelligent script. This disc looks a lot better than the ragged earlier DVD, plus it offers a superior Italian language soundtrack. And don’t forget Gary Teetzel’s recommendation: as an adaptation of The Odyssey, it’s right up there with O Brother Where Art Thou!

There are dozens of striking images in the new sci-fi thriller H., and almost all of them are creepy. Much like 2014’s evocative masterpiece Under the Skin, writer-directors Rania Attieh and Daniel Garcia aren’t interested in telling a cohesive story so much as creating an auditory and visual experience. Frustrating and fascinating in equal measure, H. is a brilliant mindbender that cinephiles should seek out.
There are strange things afoot in the village of Troy, New York. Objects streak across the sky, a black horse gallops through the streets, and alarming numbers of people disappear without a trace. And, oh yes, there is an enormous head floating down the Hudson River. H. begins with a quote from Homer’s Iliad and continues to borrow heavily from the Greek epic throughout. Fittingly, the two main characters are both named ‘Helen.
