It used to be that video game adaptations were limited to big budget franchises, with household names like Super Mario Bros. and Mortal Kombat getting blockbuster movies while more niche experiences like Dino Crisis and System Shock were mostly ignored by non-gamer audiences. Not only that, but corporate expectations and bloated production budgets meant that these big screen adaptations would often misunderstand what made these franchises popular in the first place.
Fortunately, it seems that the days of the “video game curse” are far behind us. Not only are recognizable franchises like Five Nights at Freddy’s receiving long-awaited adaptations, but even indie experiments like David Szymanski’s Iron Lung are being adapted into feature length horror movies (with this one in particular being written and directed by none other than Markiplier). And with the indie gaming scene going through a creative revolution, we thought that this might be the...

George Maharis, who starred as the brooding Buz Murdock on Route 66 before he quit the acclaimed 1960s CBS drama after contracting hepatitis, has died. He was 94.
Maharis died Wednesday at his home in Beverly Hills, his longtime friend and caregiver Marc Bahan told The Hollywood Reporter.
Route 66, created by Stirling Silliphant and Herbert B. Leonard, featured the Hell’s Kitchen native Murdock and Martin Milner‘s Yale dropout Tod Stiles touring the highways of America in Tod’s Chevrolet Corvette, encountering adventure along the way.
The show “was really kind of a searching or what you may have seen hundreds of years ago where the people came over the mountains to go from one place to the other to find a better life, a place where they belonged, and they didn’t rely on anybody else to do it for them,” Maharis told The Seattle Times in 2008.

If you love survival horror games, odds are you love Resident Evil. The series essentially wrote the book on survival horror mechanics, from tank controls to limited ammo. Even when Resident Evil went third-person with Resident Evil 4, the game did such a good job that it became the blueprint many studios copy to this day.
Now while many survival horror games, especially modern ones, copy Resident Evil’s blueprint, calling most of them “Resident Evil clones” would be disingenuous. Many titles add unique spins, such as Fatal Frame’s camera that forces players to wait until enemies attack for maximum damage, or Siren’s sight-jacking ability that lets gamers scout out areas by seeing the world through a monster’s eyes. Of course, there is no shortage of games that take at least some inspiration from Resident Evil (or are just survival horror titles in general). In fact, you...

While we never did get The Evil Within 3, a recent Easter Egg found in developer Tango Gameworks’ newest game seems to hint that we may still get it.
Per GamesRadar, fans have noted that Tango Gameworks’ Hi-Fi Rush, which was released back in January for consoles and PC, has several references to The Evil Within series. Notably, however, is a newly uncovered Easter Egg that seemingly teases The Evil Within 3, or at least a new entry in the series.
During the cinematic preceding Track 11: The Needle Drop, you are shown taking an elevator ride to meet up with the game’s final boss. Just as the elevator reaches its destination, there’s a quick look at a screen that shows you’ve arrived at floor 776. The bottom of the screen has a newsfeed, which reads: “Sequel to popular survival horror franchise anounced [sic].”
You can check out the footage below with the timestamp.

Rhythm games, as a rule, have largely been ignored over the past decade. Though Guitar Hero made a splash in the early 2000s and spawned a wave of me-too music titles that persisted throughout the late 2010s, the genre has all but evaporated. Long-running franchises like Dance Dance Revolution and Beatmania are now left largely relegated to Japan where they originated. While there are glimpses of the rhythm game renaissance every once in a blue moon, music-first releases have essentially become extinct.

Before diving into this week’s discussion on The Evil Within 2, Would you kindly listen to last week’s chat celebrating Bioshock’s 15 anniversary?
No matter the medium, sequels are notoriously contentious undertakings. Trying to appease everyone rarely results in a sequel that is as beloved as the original, so finding a balance between IP innovation and IP familiarity is crucial.
Given this challenging balancing act, it’s impressive to see a sequel take as bold of a swing as The Evil Within 2 does, and even more impressive that it knocks it out of the park. Smartly retaining the frightening but flawed aesthetic of survival horror legend Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within, the sequel abides by the “bigger and better” methodology while avoiding the inherent pitfalls of sequels.
Time and time again, sequels lose their focus and unique identity that ultimately defined them in an attempt to grow both their world and mechanics.

Thirteen years on from its release, Dead Space is still regarded as one of the best horror games ever made, especially within the community of dedicated fans that to this day mourn the death of the franchise. Unable to meet publisher Electronic Arts’ increasingly ambitious sales expectations, the final death knell for the series was 2013’s Dead Space 3, an action-heavy sequel that abandoned the scarier tone and environmental storytelling of the original for co-op shooter gameplay meant to appeal to a wider audience.

Sony has just kicked off its latest sale for all PlayStation owners, this time in celebration of the year’s spookiest holiday.
Well over 200 individual games (including Dlc and special editions) are currently available for a fraction of their usual asking price in the aptly-named Halloween Sale, with the majority of those included in the promotion belonging to the horror genre. There are some exceptions that wholly ignore the theme, of course, such as Crash Team Racing and Spyro (your guess is as good as ours), but generally speaking, most of what you’ll find here either contains zombies, human-eating monsters, murderous animatronic animals or legions of demons intent on enslaving Earth’s entire population.
See if you can spot the games each of those references belongs to – as well as hundreds of other lesser-known titles – via the full list below.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is the new first-person horror game from Tango Gameworks, the studio led by Resident Evil veteran Shinji Mikami which previously created The Evil Within series. At E3 2019, Mikami described the stylish and eerie Ghostwire: Tokyo, which takes place in the aftermath of a Rapture-like event, as an action-adventure game in which you will fight paranormal enemies and rid the city of “a supernatural evil.”
Ikumi Nakamura, former creative director at Tango Gameworks, explained that players will “encounter conspiracies and the occult. You have to explore the world, face challenges.”
“We are making a new kind of action-adventure game,” Nakamura said. “It’s spooky! But not the usual kind of survival horror game Tango is known for.”
While an announcement trailer teased the aesthetic of the game, we don’t know very much about the actual story of the title except that something is really awry with reality. According to Bethesda,...

Welcome to Let’s All Scare Bryan to Death, my new column based on the idea that there are a lot of horror movies in the world, and I haven’t seen a lot of them. I’m going to work on changing that with the help of people who love horror and are smarter than me (re: everyone) by getting them to introduce me to a movie I’ve never seen before. That’s literally the only criteria. We’ll talk about the movie and see what kind of fun stuff we can pull out of it.
For my first installment, I decided to jump right into the deep end with Andrea Subissati, who you may know as the Executive Editor at Rue Morgue Magazine, one half of the Faculty of Horror podcast, and simply one of the most intelligent voices in horror today. Her selection for this most...

Bethesda kicked off their 2019 E3 press conference by announcing updates and expansions for some of their biggest games including Fallout 76, The Elder Scrolls, and Rage 2. A few brand-new titles were announced including Ghostwire: Tokyo, a very promising title from the makers of Resident Evil and The Evil Within. Video game streaming seems to be all the rage right now and Bethesda has jumped on that bandwagon with a service of their own.
Fallout 76 Updates
Despite Fallout 76 receiving mixed reviews upon its release last year, Bethesda have been hard at work to improve the game. During the press conference, Todd Howard took the stage to show off the new updates for Fallout 76, including a new 52 player battle royale mode called Nuclear Winter and the Wastelanders update, which will have new story quests, NPCs to interact with, and branching dialogue options. Fallout 76 will also have a free trial period from June 10th-...

Being a lifelong lover of horror, I’ve naturally indulged in the genre outside of movies and literature. To be honest, the video game medium might be my favorite to explore this avenue just because of how immersive it is and how it transports you to a different world like no other.
But for the longest time, there weren’t many franchises that did it well outside of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, at least in my view. Fortunately, though, we’ve seen a turnaround with the likes of Dead Rising, Dead Space, The Evil Within, Until Dawn and, of course, Friday the 13th: The Game.
As you’re likely well aware, the interactive experience preserving the legacy of Jason Voorhees is the gift that keeps on giving, as it consistently offers devoted players new content. In fact, some additional Single Player Challenges just dropped, thereby allowing us the opportunity...

It was announced tonight at The Game Awards, that Fallout developer Bethesda, together with Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter, will rescue the single-player genre. In the video, Carter is calling out on players to save the single-player game as "every hour around the globe, neglected players feel lonely, shunned by their multiplayer counterparts."
As someone who plays single-player games more than multiplayer ones, I can definitely relate to the conundrum Bethesda is presenting here. However, although a lot of video game developers are focusing their efforts on online multiplayer games, there are still a lot of publishers, besides Bethesda of course, that are still releasing single player games.
Although the video campaign is light-hearted and not so serious, I get Bethesda's dedication to keeping players interested in playing single-player games. After all, this is what Bethesda is good at with successful franchises such as Fallout, Skyrim, Wolfenstein, and The Evil Within to name a few.

A Doctor Who episode from legendary author Douglas Adams will be finished via animation, featuring the voices of the original actors...
When Douglas Adams unexpectedly died in 2001, he left a monumental void in the world of science fiction. October is upon us which means it’s time for spooks and scares, and video games are the perfect way to get that experience. Take a look at some games we hope make a return in the gaming world to, you know, make our editors wet their pants.
When we say return we are not talking about reboots, but rather a return to form. Some of these listed below have seen recent sequels, but they've strayed pretty far from the series' roots (or only launched on mobile platforms).
