“Ma’am, I’m 10 years old, you think I could write this alone? I don’t think so.” The age demographics in Hollywood are about to skew a lot younger because a pre-teen has pitched an idea that is soon enough going to be written for the screen – and it’s a wonder it hasn’t been made yet. Here we have Home Alone meets The Godfather, in which we imagine one scene where Kevin McCallister jumps on his parents’ bed, only to find a decapitated horse head at the foot of it. The title? Little Wiseguy.
But the pitch doesn’t come from a desperate studio suit but rather a 10-year-old named Connor Esterson, who you may actually be familiar with, as he co-starred in last year’s Spy Kids: Armageddon. And while Esterson has very likely seen Home Alone numerous times around the holiday season, he admits he...

Matthew Perry, best known for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, has died. He was 54.
The actor was found unconscious late this afternoon at his L.A. home by first responders who were unable to revive him, law enforcement sources told Deadline.
Perry’s death is considered an ongoing investigation, we hear.
Throughout his career, Perry struggled with addiction, which he detailed in his memoir “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” published last year.
“I really lived life to its fullest and that got me in trouble from time to time,” he said in a US Weekly interview several years ago.
Perry made his television debut in 1979 on an episode of 240-Robert. He would go on to book roles in shows like Not Necessarily the News (1983), Charles in Charge (1985), Silver Spoons (1986), Just the Ten of Us (1988) and Highway to Heaven (1988). Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. The safety of the cult favorite is not yet known beyond season two, but if this one is as good as the first, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.

Season two of The Gilded Age is also streaming this month, with Bertha challenging both Mrs. Astor and the old system in this new run.

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.
Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. October is also a big month for Batman and Superman with Man of Steel arriving on Oct. 1 along with a whole of animated specials dropping that same day.
In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

In 2004, Easter fell on the second weekend of April. It featured Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” as the #1 film, ousting Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy.” That was no accident as part of a brilliantly executed release that achieved results far beyond anything Gibson anticipated.
Sixteen years isn’t that long ago, but the box-office weekend was full of titles and results that are impossible to imagine today. But first, here’s the context and some major achievements for Gibson’s film (all figures adjusted to 2020 ticket prices):

1. “Trollhunters” Season 1 (available December 23)
Why Should I Watch It? Two big reasons: First, the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Guillermo del Toro, created “Trollhunters,” an animated event series about a teenager who discovers a mystical amulet that unveils a secret civilization of trolls beneath his hometown. If the Oscar nominee himself isn’t enough, there’s another creative force — in addition to the impressive voice cast of Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman and Charlie Saxton — to pay attention to: Said teenager is voiced by Anton Yelchin, in what’s being billed his final role. After debuting two episodes at New York Comic-Con in October, del Toro said he never even discussed replacing Yelchin. “We didn’t go into a meeting,” del Toro said. “We didn’t have a conference. […] He was a great guy to work with, he was proud of what he did, we were proud of what he did.

The new year is upon us, and it’s time to clean up Netflix once again. Don’t fear too much though, as much as we hate to see some of our favorites leave Netflix, they do a pretty good job at adding some great new content. We lose Almost Famous, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho, The Graduate, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and all the Rocky movies – and we get Intolerable Cruelty, Training Day, The Rundown and a new Netflix Original for Degrassi: The Next Class.

Warner Bros. is being taken to court again by two Germany film companies that claim the studio breached a settlement agreement covering four films and is violating their copyright to Laws of Attraction, starring Pierce Brosnan and Julianne Moore. Remember when Bruce Willis used to make interesting, original movies, like Pulp Fiction, Twelve Monkeys and The Fifth Element? An air of excitement would surround each announcement detailing which project the actor would get involved with next. It’s been some time since that excitement has been felt, however, because Willis has essentially been making the same movie, repeatedly, for years. Aaron Paul became a critically acclaimed actor while appearing in a recurring role on the television series Big Love and earned even more praise – and won two Emmy Awards – for his starring role on Breaking Bad. So why is it that the movie Need for Speed, which starred Paul, underperformed in U.S. theaters this past weekend?
Just because Paul is an award-winning actor on television does not mean audiences were going to pack the theaters to see his movie. In fact, there is a long history of wildly popular television stars who fail in their attempt to transition to movie stardom. In many cases, these TV stars made poor choices when it came to film roles. In other instances, viewers simply had no interest in seeing these actors play anything else but their beloved TV characters.

Embattled movie financier David Bergstein's lawsuit against Aramid Entertainment Fund, claiming it breached terms of a 2009 settlement of a loan dispute, was dismissed Aug. 5 by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge, who ruled the same action cannot be amended or re-filed. Bergstein, who has been credited as a producer on films like The Whole Ten Yards and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, had sought some $50 million in damages from Aramid, Screen Capital International, fund manager David Molner and related parties whom he blames for the 2010 involuntary bankruptcy of five companies he once ran. There's obviously a market out there for sequels — just look at the summer movie release schedule and you'll find at least one a week. And hey, sometimes a film leaves us wondering what happens next.
But sometimes there are films that had no need for a part two, where audiences left the theater the first go-round and said, "I'm good." And in the case of these ten films, we've got the numbers to prove it!
Hollywood, heed our wisdom: Sometimes it's best to just leave well enough alone.
10. 'Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights' (2004) — Sequel to 'Dirty Dancing' (1987)
• "Dirty Dancing": $62,811,299
• "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights": $14,140,215
So you had the time of your life in 1987? Big deal. You can't relive the magic 17 years later by conceiving a half-hearted retread set against the backdrop of revolutionary Cuba. Really, this film has nothing to do with the original, save for a brief Patrick Swayze cameo.

After three years of legal battles in bankruptcy court, Ronald Tutor and his former partner in the movie business David Bergstein have won an important legal victory that appears to open the door for Tutor to finally sell more than 500 movies that have been frozen for months by a legal injunction including The Whole Ten Yards, Woody Allen’s Sweet And Lowdown, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the Oscar-winning documentary Taxi To The Darkside. On Monday in Los Angeles, federal Judge Barry Russell issued a final order dismissing complaints for fraudulent transfer of movies and other things by four

It seems like Bruce Willis is the undeniable king of appearing in unnecessary sequels. His conscience as of late has to have gone something like this: “Parts in The Expendables 2 and GI Joe: Retaliation, yeah sure why not?” Or how about, “Another Die Hard movie that’s basically an insult to the fundamental ideas of the original? Well if there’s a lucrative paycheck involved, then okay.” And I know it came out nearly ten years ago, but don’t even get me started on The Whole Ten Yards. Now we’ve got Red 2, one of those head-scratching sequels that make you wonder how it was even an option until you check the box office returns on the original. The first Red movie was made for a modest $58 million and made upwards of $199 million in domestic and foreign ticket sales.

Red 2 will put the pop back in your popcorn. Remember the days when a summer film was about entertainment. Some explosions, a little chase, an errant snide comment, those were the good old days. If you’re looking to get off the brooding express and get back into your 10-year-old lovin’ Die Hard mindset, Red 2 is the film for you. The beauty of Red 2 is that it fulfills on the promise that The Whole Ten Yards failed to deliver on nearly ten years ago. Once again, Bruce Willis has the opportunity to bind together a cast of eccentric characters while not dominating the film himself. Willis is often at his best when he is at his subtlest. Still, it’s not a Willis film if he isn’t kicking a little butt. In one sequence, Willis is engaged in close quarters combat with the henchman of a villain played by Neil McDonough.

Michael Clarke Duncan was a big actor in every sense of the word, a former bodyguard who got a huge break at the age of 41 with a stunning performance in "The Green Mile," and turned in an eclectic range of memorable roles in action, comedy, and dramas.
After tragically dying of a heart attack yesterday at age 54, we're paying tribute to the man by laying out his five career-best filmic turns.

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan died yesterday morning in a Los Angeles hospital. His death was confirmed by a statement from his fiancee, Omarosa Manigault. He was 54.
Duncan was a beloved actor, who typically portrayed kind-hearted or vulnerable characters despite his massive stature. He is best known for his role as John Coffey in The Green Mile, for which he earned an Oscar nomination. Despite only taking up acting in 1995, Duncan was a prolific actor, with 94 credits to his name. Those credits include Daredevil, The Whole Ten Yards, Sin City, Kung Fu Panda, and Green Lantern.
My favorite role of Duncan’s was his work in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Normally when serious actors like Duncan are in comedies they stick out, but in Talladega Nights he has some of the funniest moments of a very funny movie. As soon as I heard of his death I instantly...

Oscar-nominated actor Michael Clarke Duncan has passed away at the age of 54, according to his fiancée Omarosa Stallworth and news reports on the wire. Duncan suffered a heart attack on July 13 and according to his publicist, he never fully recovered from it. After a number of years doing television and small movie roles, Michael Clarke Duncan first got the attention of moviegoers when he was cast in the role of inmate John Coffey in Frank Darabont's 2000 prison drama The Green Mile , giving a performance opposite Tom Hanks that would earn him an Oscar nomination at the age of 43. From there, he was paired with Bruce Willis and Matt Perry in the 1999 comedy The Whole Nine Yards , which spawned the sequel The Whole Ten Yards , but the 6' 5" Clarke Duncan found most of his...

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. Matthew Perry’s last shot at sitcom stardom, ABC’s Mr. Sunshine in 2011, didn’t work out so well, lasting less than a season. Undaunted, he’s back again — and at the scene of his greatest success, NBC — for Go On, produced by Friends writer-producer Scott Silveri and starring Perry as a sports talk radio host and recent widower who reluctantly joins a grief counseling support group. “I gravitate toward broken characters who try to be better people”, Perry said this afternoon at TCA. He added that Mr. Sunshine, too, was about such a character but believes, “This is a much better setup”. He added of his Mr. Sunshine character, “That guy was sort of in a bad mood and no one really knew why”. When it was pointed that a lot of people in the room liked Mr. Sunshine, Perry was befuddled.

NBC is hosting a "Friends" reunion of sorts, with Matthew Perry reteaming with writer Scott Silveri for their new comedy "Go On."
"[With] 'Friends,' it was just great chemistry," Perry said, trying to explain the iconic show's success at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour on Tuesday. "It had great writing, it had great directing, it had really great acting -- a little bit of magic happened there. You never know when that’s going to happen, you just want to surround yourself with funny, talented people, which we definitely did here."
Silveri created the show and always had Perry in mind. "Writing for him back then [on 'Friends'] was a joy because we have a lot of overlap in our sensibilities," he explained. "It was always very easy to write for [Chandler], now we get to do it with different subject matter that we never could’ve done on 'Friends.'...

Clearly, Jack Black made one too many "Gulliver's Travels" or "A Big Year" -- in the last twelve months or so, the comic star (who just released a new record under his Tenacious D guise) has veered mostly away from big studio comedies to more interesting sounding indie-type projects, like Richard Linklater's recent, and very charming "Bernie," prospective Michael Winterbottom project "Bailout," and Charlie Kaufman's "Frank or Francis." And now, there's another one on his dance card that sounds pretty promising, all in all.
Screen Daily report that the actor is in talks to join Howard Deutch's "Wild Oats," which would see him reteam with his "Bernie" co-star Shirley MacLaine, as well as the great Alan Arkin and "Animal Kingdom" Oscar-nominee Jacki Weaver. As reported by Deadline's Mike Fleming, Zach Braff might be the next big name to head to Oz. The actor is in negotiations for the role of Frank, the loyal but under-appreciated assistant to Oz (James Franco) in Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful.
Since leaving "Scrubs" last year, Braff hasn't exactly been lighting up the silver screen. Instead he has been spending his time writing his first play, which opens off-Broadway in July. Meanwhile, he can also be seen starring in the drama High Cost of Living, currently playing On Demand.
As for Oz, it's described as a prequel to the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz written by Mitchell Kapner (The Whole Ten Yards) and influenced by creator L. Red leading man (and once and future Die Hard kingpin) Bruce Willis is not a happy man during his new chitchat with Zach Galifianakis on Between Two Ferns. After a barrage of questions Willis chooses not to answer ("Do you get Ashton's Tweets?" "Where you worried that The Whole Ten Yards would be too good?") plus a possible wasp infestation, one question finally got him to open up.

I always worry that the awkward interview gag of Zach Galifianakis' "Between Two Ferns" sketch at Funny or Die will wear itself thin, but I swear, every time he comes back it just gets funnier. This week he's sitting between the potted plants with Bruce Willis, ostensibly to promote Red but actually to ask him questions like "Which is your favorite child, Ashton?" and "When you were making The Whole Ten Yards were you ever worried it would be too good?" Willis gives nothing but stone-cold stares most of the time, but when he starts reminiscing about the 80s. well, you really just need to see it for yourself. Check out the video below for your daily reminder why Bruce Willis makes this world a better place. I'm not going to say it's better than Red, but I will say no ferns catch on fire in the movie coming...

'Between Two Ferns' is back and more uncomfortable than ever. You know that scene in 'Bowfinger' wherein Steve Martin -- in an attempt to convince his crew to stealthily film an actor without his consent -- tells his crew, "Did you know Tom Cruise had no idea he was in that vampire movie till two years later?" Well, that's actually true, and it's also very similar to the premise of Zach Galifianakis' 'Between Two Ferns,' in which the host's hilariously self-serious guests are ostensibly unaware as to the tidal wave of awkwardness that's coming their way. The celebrity interviewees are obviously in on the joke, but this is the first installment in which you might actually fear for Galifianakis' safety (and not just because he catches fire).

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is being remade in Hollywood by David Fincher and the heroine Lisbeth Salander will be played by Rooney Mara (above), who was actually quite good in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. Let The Right One In has already been remade by Hollywood, as Let Me In, starring Kodi Smit-McPhee from The Road and Chloe Moretz, from Kick Ass. Fincher will shoot The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in Sweden. Daniel Craig has signed...

The first teaser for Red, Robert Schwentke's (The Time Traveler's Wife, Flightplan, Tattoo) adaptation of Warren Ellis' (Astonishing X-Men, Planetary, Nextwave, Global Frequency, Transmetropolitan, The Authority) and Cully Hamner's (Detective Comics, Blue Beetle, Down) comic book miniseries is now ready for your viewing pleasure.
In Red, Bruce Willis plays a retired CIA agent, Frank Moses, who can't adjust to life as a civilian, similar to the character he played in The Whole Nine Yards and the sequel, The Whole Ten Yards. Another former CIA agent, Victoria (Helen Mirren), offsets domestic duties with contract kills. Yet another agent, Joe Matheson (Morgan Freeman), has retired to a nursing home. A fourth agent(!), Marvin Boggs (John Malkovich), is in permanent survivalist mode. Moses confides his personal and professional problems to his handler, Sarah (Mary Louise-Parker). Got all that?

With Hollywood in their current “we love the '80s” mode, any film to come out that takes place in the '90s is a welcome sight in my eyes. Just off the top of my head, the last film that I remember seeing to take place in the '90s was Jonathan Levine's The Wackness. Whether you liked or disliked seeing Sir Gandhi Kingsley smoke weed and listen to east coast rap classics is beside the point. The point is there is an entire decade of potentially great stories just waiting to be tapped into. With that being said, the folks over at Trailer Addict [1] have just put up a new trailer for Middle Men. From what I gather of the preview, the film is a biopic on the men responsible for the birth of internet porn in the '90s, and God bless them. The film is...

Deadline has confirmed last week's report from Vulture stating Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) will direct Oz, the Great and Powerful for Walt Disney Pictures with the current expectation for Robert Downey Jr. to play the wizard.
Mitchell Kapner (The Whole Ten Yards) wrote the screenplay based influenced by creator L. Frank Baum's "Oz" books including some ideas of his own turning the wizard into a charlatan in Kansas who's part of a traveling circus but goes on a similar odyssey as Dorothy when he mysteriously lands in Oz where he gets mistaken for a know-it-all (source Los Angeles Times).
The question of Downey seems a bit precarious considering he's got Sherlock Holmes 2 on the horizon as well as Gravity with Alfonso Cuaron and who knows when or what his commitment to The Avengers is, but one would expect he'll be a major part of that production given Iron Man is...

Today Universal released Get Him to the Greek, a sort-of sequel to 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall as it uses Aldous Snow who had a small role in the original. Beyond that, there is only a brief reference to Sarah Marshall, which has me thinking it's not really a sequel as much as it is a spin-off. The same could be said for a movie like Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)... Same characters, but not really a sequel to Clerks, which ended up having its own sequel in 2006.
In a debate with a group of fellow Seattle critics trying to decide if Get Him to the Greek was a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall or not, the topic turned to comedy sequels in general and I was asked to name a great comedy sequel. Should be easy... right?
