It's the same old Tuesday song: Fox dominated the night with American Idol and a repeat of medical drama House, while CBS provided the only remotely competitive program with The Amazing Race at 9 p.m. Fox's 8 p.m. edition of American Idol delivered an average of 24.6 million viewers and 10.4 rating/29 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. At 9 p.m., the House encore was on fire with a more-than-healthy 17 million viewers and 6.3/15 in adults 18-49. Idol deflated the 8 p.m. competition, but CBS' Race (13.5 million, 5.1/12) shined at 9 p.m. by soaring in the demo from its NCIS lead-in (13.1 million, 2.9/8). WB was plucky at 8 p.m. with Gilmore Girls (5.4 million, 2.4/6). ABC had a sluggish night all around, especially with its 9 p.m. anchor According to Jim in repeat (8.3 million, 3.2/8). NBC was weak from 8-10 p.m. with a repeat of Outrageous Game Show Moments special (5.9 million, 1.8/5) leading into 9 p.m.'s Scrubs (5.7 million, 2.7/7) and 9:30 p.m.'s The Office (4.8 million, 2.2/5). CBS and NBC split the bragging rights at 10 p.m., with the peacock's repeat of Law & Order: SVU (10.2 million, 3.7/10) winning in the key demo while CBS' fresh episode of Judging Amy (11.5 million, 3.4/9) prevailed in total viewers. ABC trailed its Big Three rivals in the time slot with Blind Justice (7.4 million, 2.8/7). For the night, it was Fox by a mile with an average of 20.8 million viewers and 8.4/22 in the demo. CBS was No. 2 in both measures with an average of 12.7 million viewers and 3.8/10 in adults 18-49.

Fox was on fire Tuesday with the penultimate episode of American Idol and the cliffhanger season finale of the 9 p.m. drama 24. The two American Idol finalists, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, battled it out to the tune of 25.7 million viewers and an 11.2 rating/31 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, breaking the 18-49 share record for the blockbuster franchise. With that kind of lead-in, 24 (14.2 million, 6.4/16) couldn't help but soar to its personal-best total-viewer number, according to Nielsen Media Research data. CBS placed second for the night behind Fox with the conclusion of its Hitler: The Rise of Evil miniseries, which delivered 12.2 million viewers and a 3.7/9 in adults 18-49 from 9-11 p.m. NBC didn't have much pull at 9 p.m. with the season finale of Frasier (11.5 million, 3.9/10), which was handicapped by an anemic lead-in from the 8 p.m. Outrageous Game Show Moments special (6.2 million, 2.0/6). ABC had a slow night until 10 p.m., when NYPD Blue (12.5 million, 5.0/13) won the hour with its 10th-season finale. For the night, Fox steamrolled the competition with an average of 19.9 million viewers and an 8.8/23 in 18-49. CBS was No. 2 in viewers (12.5 million), while ABC ran second in adults 18-49 (4.0/11).
