Automated Warfare
This game is an honorable mention for the Atari 2600 games I like and love, though I also feels is one that treaded under the radar. This game was a direct hit and popular for its time, heck it even had a cool TV commercial but as time went on has treaded away from consciousness. It' also funny how the premise of this game is sort of prolific as to what's happening now with our drone technology and 2019 closely approaching. I'm thinking by this time they need to make an anniversary addition to this game, VR game, or even a sequel where it takes place in the far future and you not just fight robot tanks but different types of robots. Ok, sounds like the future war sequences in "The Terminator" but why not, it a thought anyway.
This game is another volume for Activision's 2600 series and I personally think it's one of their best in my book. It's a tank warfare game which is cool and something I don't see enough of in video games these days, I always found those games fun because it's always about precise action and the suspense of being the hunter or the hunted.
This game is pretty much like "Battlezone" doesn't seem to special but unlike that game here you actually see things in full color. Really like the use of the graphical display from the tanks and background which is basic but hey it's the 2600 what are you going to do. Though my favorite portion of the game is the explosion effects, really like the animated explosion which has a brief strobe light effect, but mainly the sound I love which is just music to my ears.
Gameplay is solid, it's got the basic control just like with "Battlezone" your hunting down tanks on your radar which is your friend in these games and blowing them away before they blow you away. However, what really makes this game stand out is the fact that as a span of time goes, the weather changes. This is cool because it really keeps the challenge in the game fresh, as the environment constantly changes it causes you to adapt and adjust to new tactics quickly. The weather is an obstacle that can put you at a disadvantage, like the weather can change to night which makes you unable to see the tanks when treading near, so you use your radar to help line your sights up on target. Or when it's snowing which is even worse where you can see the tanks, but your mobility is slightly unsteady which is why it's best to try to hit the tanks at long distance if possible.
Overall if you are looking for vintage Tank games or interested in games for the Atari 2600 system this is a game worth treading to.
Rating: 3 and a half stars
