A bud that fails to bloom.
Desrio13 January 2022
In 1950s Yorkshire, Ellen, mother of 10 year-old Victor, is stifled in a loveless marriage to her factory worker husband. In an otherwise dull life, Victor's teacher, Kathy is a source of light and colour. Soon, Ellen realises that her feelings for Kathy go deeper than just friendship.

Victor is a bright and gifted lad whose artistic ability brings him to the attention of his teacher, Miss Thomson. Her encouragement and her part in having his work included in a local art exhibition give her and Victor's mother, Ellen, common cause and, as a result, they spend a good deal of time together.

While Ellen is uneducated, she is intelligent and articulate and expresses how much she would like to have seen more of life; to have learned more. Miss Thomson - Kathy - listens and empathises with her new friend. As a result Ellen and Kathy, with Victor in tow, start to see each other socially.

Meanwhile, Ellen's husband, Geoff, who is a dutiful but unloving husband, and who struggles to find any way in which to relate to his son or appreciate his son's gifts, dislikes Ellen's new friendship, perhaps sensing that Kathy is more in a position to repond to Ellen's wider emotional and intellectual vistas.

As Ellen and Kathy's friendship deepens it becomes noticeable that there is connection building between them.

Summer comes, and one night while Ellen is away on holiday with Geoff and Victor, she realises, during a thunderstorm, that Kathy gives her things that Geoff never could, and with it she realises just how deep her feelings for her now lie. The realisation is like being struck by the lightning flashing outside.

Between Two Women is something of a family affair with Victor being played by Edward Woodcock, son of writer/director/producer Stephen and executive producer, Julie. Andrew Dunn, a capable actor, is not given the opportunity to bring more to a role that we have seen all too many times before - the gruff, emotionally repressed, working-class Northern male. Andrina Carroll, is charming as Kathy, but plays her with a touch of timidity that is somewhat at odds with her apparent sophistication and wide-ranging intellect. Barbara Marten, however, makes up for the other characters' deficits by portraying Ellen as a woman who is warm and loving, and whose eyes search for some far distant horizon that she is never likely to see; all the while with a hint of sadness that wins our sympathies.

With a running time of just 92 minutes, Between Two Women is not without its longueurs. At times the characters seem to be shuffled about without any real sense of purpose or meaning: a scene where Victor plays with a friend near a railway line hints at the possibility of great danger, but it plays out without incident. Perhaps the film's origins on commercial TV account for its peculiar dramatic rhythms. Elsewhere, a strangely inappropriate synthesiser soundtrack by Michael Hammer - sounding like something you might find playing in the background in a shop that stocks healing crystals - intrudes and does nothing to support the period feel of the film.

Woodcock's film seeks to explore the emergence of 'forbidden' love and does so without titillation, dwelling instead on emotional intimacy. But even there it never fully comes to grips it's subject, offering us no release through professions of love or even a kiss. Throughout, trains are used, somewhat heavy-handedly, as a metaphor for escape and freedom, not least when Ellen and her parents see off Ellen's sister and her husband as they embark on their journey to a new life in Australia, the 'Young Country'

Slow, intimate and with an adumbrative ending, Between Two Women would, I'm sure, be an altogether better film with a new soundtrack and some substantial re-editing.

peeling paint

Warning: Spoilers
Looking forward to a subtle period piece about love which cannot be expressed easily especially in the repressive 1950s, I was hoping for a film with plenty of subtlety and nuance, expressiveness and sensitivity. Unfortunately, these factors were demeaned by an excruciating screenplay, totally inadequate to the film and its actors; a monotonously boring and irritating soundtrack which obtruded at every point; and a labouring of obvious sentiments unnecessarily. The actors were inhibited, not by the subject, but by the production and dialogue. Watching this film was not dissimilar to watching paint dry - or in this case peeling - the door of the leading character's house was dilapidated and needed stripping down and repainting badly - a rather good metaphor for the whole film.

However, the one high point was the setting: the period detail was exact and lovingly attended to by the director (and as I read, he inherited many of the accessories from his grandmother). I was brought up in the fifties and felt totally familiar with the scenes - whether soft furnishings and wallpapers; kitchen utensils and public transport, costumes and handbags. These were a joy to see - but sadly, the film moved as slowly as the fifties I remember (maybe this was intentional!).

So I can only rate this movie as 5 out of 10. I liked the story and the characters, but the drama was too low-key to be effective and for a story of 'forbidden love' did not translate to a 21st century audience who are a world away from fifties ideology, prejudices, and inhibitions. It was nice that the film ended on a note of hope but the plot was contrived to achieve this and fell flat.

Pity.

Too Subtle
lbezdecheck21 September 2012
The storyline was slim, the actors were excellent and the tension true but there was far too much mere wanting and we didn't even get to enjoy the happy ending. It was as though this movie was made by a sexually uptight lesbian who loved the characters but was embarrassed by any physicality. Finally the overly dramatic and tacky music was distracting. There simply is not enough of a movie to write about that could fill up ten lines! A decent flick overall but all worry and no fun makes Jack a dull movie that was clean but plain. I would have to be bored out of my skull to view it again however worthy the film is in subtle ways.....can I stop writing now?

My god, this movie is dull.

Warning: Spoilers
Between Two Women is an love story set Northern England in the 1950's. With that setting, you can imagine there's a whole love of repression, sexual and otherwise going on in the film. But damn, surely there's a way to make a movie about repression without making it quite so dull.

The film's lead romance is between wife and mother Ellen who develops a connection with her son's teacher, Kathy. Kathy encourages Ellen's son, Victor to pursue art and enters one of his pieces into competition. This allows Kathy and Ellen to spend even more time together. This is all to the displeasure of Ellen's miserable husband.

Ellen and Kathy talk about their relationship in somewhat abstract terms, devoid of emotion. They hold hands once and that's it. There's neither any love confessions nor a kiss. I guess these characters and the movie itself are too repressed for that.

Between Two women is a dull, forgettable movie. I've seen lots like this film, some better, some worse but all with more personality. The film wants to say something and make a point but it's not strong enough to do so. Unable to convey a message, that leaves the film's actual story which is full of boring characters going about fairly boring lives.

Beautiful mediation on love
SamuelPlankmaker21 September 2006
This jewel of a film is strictly for romantics. The film is a quiet character study of a woman who finds the courage to open herself to the possibilities of love and happiness. After a lifetime of repression and fear of disappointing family, the lead character can no longer deny the intense feelings that have developed between herself and her son's schoolteacher, and finally allows herself to experience what she really wants. The film may not contain the flash and raunchiness that many viewers are used to (no kissing, although there is some very heart-warming hand-holding), but for this viewer, it was stirring and captivating, and one of the most vividly romantic pieces I've seen in a long time. Magnificent acting highlighted this beautiful story.

Understated Romance, Sentimental/Nostalgia Feel
earthboli10 August 2019
This film won't please everyone (my partner thought it was dull and too subtle), but if you have a nostalgic feel about a small, working-class English community in the 1950s and the quiet life combined with a subtle story about two women who fall for each other, you will truly love it.

The score is dreamy and gives the film a feel for a long lost lifetime, the actors do a great job in their roles, and this film is very European in the sense that there's little dialogue and a lot of scenes of daily life and small moments. The romance between the two women is a bit too subtle at times (hence dropping a star), as it would have been nice to see a little more physical closeness, but the plot makes up for it by avoiding the pitfalls of frustrating cliches. The women gaze a little too long, smile a little bigger, and seem a little nervous around each other, which adds to the charm and romance.

This film is obscure and not well-known, but worth your time if you appreciate subtlety, feel sentimental about 1950s working class England, and dare I say, value a favorable ending!

These two.
ulicknormanowen18 December 2021
In the thirties , Lilian Hellmann wrote a play about two schoolteachers ,one of whom fell in love with her colleague ;it was transferred twice to the screen by William Wyler as "these three " (but he was forced to avoid the lesbian side) and as "the children' hour" (in which Audrey Hepburn and Shirley McLaine were unforgettable)

I had not seen a more moving movie dealing with what was then a taboo subject since "the children's hour " ; in those years ,the gay ,be he a man or a woman ,had always a bad end ( " suddenly last summer" "the fox" "advise and consent "......)

It was then and it is now : things have changed and fortunately, people have become more tolerant with homosexuals .

But "between two women" takes place in the fifties ,just before WW2, which is often hinted at ; the depiction of the social background is precise and detailed :the macho husband working in the factory , the children playing with their toy train, the wireless set , Ellen marvelling at Kathy's bathroom, a stiffling society .And it's not so sure that both women will live happily ever after : their life will be uncertain, and ,like the train ,they may enter a dark tunnel where they might meet unfriendly people .

Barbara Marten and Andrina Carroll give superlative restrained performances : looks and smiles tell their whole story , those who watch Steven Woodcock's to get an eyeful will be disappointed : it's a psychological drama of the first order ; the rapport both actresses have is extraordinary ,although they are apparently worlds apart : Kathy is an educated woman whereas Ellen is a worker's wife whose husband got pregnant before her wedding : an intelligent woman, she certainly could have carried on with her studies ,had she been given the opportunity to. Her boy's drawings (which, although impressive, depicts a gloomy reality : walls ,factory, shadows, darkness ) may be the key to the world of culture she longs for .On his part ,her husband rejects this art ,and gets jealous of his own son who makes as much money with his picture as he makes in one month .

It' s obvious Ellen and Geoff have never been in love ,and the wife did not want to show her true colors ; the coming of luminous Kathy will make the difference ;the relationship is depicted with sensitiveness, warmth and decency .

Devoping friendship between to women
Cockneylady1 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I loved it, it's a tender and subtle film, well worth watching. Nothing raunchy or unpleasant as is the fashion nowadays but a simple building friendship between two women. It's one of my favourite films, I think where it's set adds to the film. I'm not sure if it portrays northern men in a good light but all in all its a lovely film. I don't think it needs to take the relationship between the two women any further than it does. When Ellen comes to realise how she feels..it's enough I've watched many films of this genre including 'Desert Hearts' and 'Fire' which I also enjoyed. I recommend this film, your not going to be shocked or disgusted what goes on. Beautifully acted by the two leading women..Andrina Carroll and Barbara Marten too.

Great film
njpmilner12 January 2021
Really enjoyed this film, the set design was fantastic and the attention to detail for such an old era was brilliant!! The only major let down in this film was the acting of the main younge boy victor, it was very poor.... And actually quite annoying because it just wasn't natural.

f you consider yourself a purist, romanticist or idealist, you would appreciate this title!
jkujo28 July 2009
If you consider yourself a purist, romanticist or idealist, you would appreciate this title! Very subtle yet a captivating screenplay throughout. A magnificent portrayal of a woman's love that only could be brought by woman's heart. Devastatingly romantic story. I am quite impressed by the splendid talents of captivating leading casts, masterful director, screen writer and crew of those who made the creation of this Magnificent masterpiece possible. I would not call this movie a lesbian film. It deserves to be categorised as mainstream story of love and trust between women so beautifully and intimately portrayed

Since the beginning of civilisation philosophers, psychologists, many scholars and like had debated against the superiority of love that a woman can offer to all of man kinds (to both men and to women) . I personally view that of women are definitely superior to the others. Since the majority of us do not experience temporary loss of vision or complete loss of consciousness due to the required depth of sedation for major surgery such as open heart or open skull procedures. These procedures can cause tremendous trauma to your psyche. It is not unusual for patient and nurse to develop an almost like loving attachment to each other from the moment the nurse transfers you from a rolling bed to a recovery bed, then calling your name and caressing you as if rescuing you from desolated realm of unconscious. If you compare it with the same task performed by male surgical assistants at operating room ,you will be impressed with the fact that a woman's love is a priceless enlightenment. It is highly likely that someone like Ellen had finally awakened from a life-long repression to that enlightenment by following her own heart. Every female child has dreams of being swept up into a great adventure, of being the beautiful princess. Lamentably, when women grow up, they are often swept up into a life filled merely with demands, duty and responsibility. Many women are tired, struggling under the senseless pressure to be of a faithful servant, or a caregiver for children, husband or father and like. If Chen An had realised that demands from her father were unreasonable, the both girls could have survived. I have known an award winning blind female writer and her nurse companion who helped her publishing her novels until the end of writer's life age 72. The nurse died next summer found afloat on River Kamo during Gion Festival (Buddhist Spiritual season) leaving a will to be buried next to the writer. In fact I have seen them twice together on the bridge across a pond within the property of an ancient Buddhist temple in 1970's. Nurse were eyes to the writer and describing everything that the nurse can see. The both women looked very beautiful radiating the glory of love between them. They both were descendant of ancient noble families go back to 11th century and their presence seemed to enhance the tranquillity of the mid-autumn setting. I could not help but wishing their happy union forever from the moment I saw the strength and intensity of woman's love. I have always been a straight male, However, it has forever changed my attitude about woman's love. So let's wish the two women best luck and let them pursue their happiness! Loved it!
catrinnie31 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this film very much because nothing really happens in it, yet a lot happens in it. I took great pleasure in that the film wasn't focusing exclusively on the lovers, but the life that surrounded them as well.

I sort of love, sort of hate that the lovers didn't even kiss in the film but were definitely in love. I love it because it displays that they didn't need to kiss to be in love, but I also hate it because I was rooting for them throughout the film.

By the end of the film I was 'totes emosh' per say! Particularly when they sat together on the bench and Ellen cried into Kathy's arm.
