Remember
Mysterygeneration17 January 2024
Remember that this is a rated children's show and that is its primary target audience. The rivalry amongst the hamsters for their loves as well as the different alliances and relationships that inevitably form with such a huge cast of characters made the series enjoyable for me on many levels, too.

Top-notch animation and soundtrack complement the exquisitely rendered Hamsters, who harmoniously blend into a vibrant suburban setting. You'll find yourself humming along to the lighthearted and enjoyable song. Everything is so cheery, bright, and joyful.

The anime follows the lives of the neighborhood kids who raise hamsters in a slice-of-life fashion. It is an episodic series, with new misadventures, issues, and misunderstandings presented in each episode starring Hamtaro and his owner. With hilarious antics, the avatars' characteristics mirror those of their owners. The varied group of people gives the narrative vitality and enjoyment.

HAMTARO: Cute Anime Sells
Jinxxa_Wolf8 April 2024
HAMTARO (2000-2006) is definitely an ultra cute ( kawaii ) anime series to be sure, and while I certainly do not fault it for that, I can understand why some people would. It might seem silly and shallow, childish and pointless...even a waste of time? But all that can be said of many other animes out there as well. And isn't TV itself a huge waste of time?

Sure, it's ultra cute, sugary and fluffy, but it's entertaining and funny as well, and kinda fun to mellow out to. Certainly not educational or intellectual, but who would expect a children's show about hamsters to be absolute sillyness? Cute shows still have their purpose and can be good positive mood boosters, destressers, and also just takes you back to being a kid again, to a time when creative imagination and random silliness was acceptable.

In some ways we all need that. Sometimes it's good to get a break from our stressful lives and bleak reality, world events, jobs, home life, health, and general stress of life etc.

"The story of hamsters who get together at meetings to talk about their adventures."

All this to say, what is wrong with a little fluffy, silly, and kiddishness once in a while? This show was fun, cute and holds some good memories for people out there. It has a silly concept to be sure, but also a light-heartedness sometimes needed in the world.

The best cartoon on TV.
moon_river28 January 2003
This cartoon relies on cuteness, intuitive humor, and pretty good animation; and it does quite well.

While it may not be the most exciting, action-packed thing out there, it gets a smile and a laugh more than three times from myself and anyone else who is around watching it with me. If you sit around and watch mindless cartoons all day, like most of the stuff on Nickelodeon and the major networks, then you probably will not like this show. Because it does not rely on gross-out humor, stupid jokes, or idiotic-looking characters, I find it quite clever.

It *does* happen to be geared towards a younger audience -- what cartoon with little animals isn't? It's refreshing in the fact that it's innocent, much better than practically anything on TV today that's smothered with innuendo or lack of intelligence.

There's a wide variety of characters, and the animation is excellent compared to most of the drab and repetitive stuff I usually come across ('Sabrina the Animated Series' or 'DBZ'). It doesn't seem to skip details and effects are well done. Plus, there are plenty of good voice actors to round out the crew -- Ted Cole especially, in my opinion. The dubbing is well-done, and that's coming from me -- I HATE dubbed anime. While Hamtaro's voice does grate occasionally, it suits his character.

If you just want to watch a nice, clean, decent show that doesn't depend on stupidity for humor... watch this.

*4/5*

PS: You may get more of a kick out of it if you own a hamster.

The verdict is in. Make it cute and everyone will love it.
ThunderKing610 June 2020
From lil kitty, to pikachu and to this. All you have to do is make a cute main character and everyone will love it just because it's cute. Take away the cuteness and this show is very empty and pointless.

I miss this show...
jaurrgu61 September 2007
I'm eighteen and I actually like Hamtaro. I can't believe it's been nearly four years since Cartoon Network gave it the boot. It's one of the few Animes I can tolerate because there are no violent monsters killing each other.

Anyway, the show is about a talking hamster named Hamtaro who has an owner named Laura. When Laura's at school, Hamtaro runs from his cage and hangs out with his hamster friends called the "Ham-Hams." They meet at an underground clubhouse and go on numerous adventures. Sometimes, when Laura goes on a trip with her family or friends, the ham-hams may tag along, too.

I believe one of the stronger points on Hamtaro was the dubbing. Many of the voices were good matches for the characters, particularly Boss (Ted Cole), Bijou (Chantal Strand) and Dexter (Samuel Vincent). The only thing I didn't like about the show was the introduction of Stan, Sandy's twin brother. I felt he didn't fit in with everyone else and his flirting made me sick.

I would definitely recommend Hamtaro if you are a parent of someone between the ages of four and ten. If you don't like robots or monsters battling their brains out on other Anime shows, then I also recommend it.

I wish this never been pulled

Hamtaro, When I was younger I would get to lay on the couch watching T.V. until Hamtaro came on.

It was a great show, although it did have a few inappropriate things.. Like Boss who always looks like a hobo..

I have seen every episode, and I love all of them. This is a show that can't be missed. It may 3 years .. but it still pulls out all of it's tricks.

Although I liked this show, I also disliked it too. but at least it kept me entertained.. until Lupin the Third came on.. so I hope it does the same for you.

I really loved this show, did they cancel it? Yeah, it's a kid's show, so what? Anyways, it's about a bunch of hamsters and the adventures that they have. It's really cute. Anyone who doesn't like this is stupid, how can they not like it?

Very very cute...Absolutely Adorable actually!
animalxingluvr24 September 2009
I remember watching this show for the first time when I was about 12 years old. I had been home from school that day for a forgotten reason (I didn't like school past age 11 but I had been allowed to watch TV that morning when normally if avoiding school I would have been trapped in my bedroom all day, so maybe I was just sick but I can't remember), and at about 7:30 AM my mom was channel surfing, she hit YTV and we were both like "huh? what's this?" and as we watched it we learned what the show was about: a group of domestic hamsters who hang out in the burrow of Boss, a wild hamster, while the domesticated hamsters' owners are at school. The hamster "club", called the Ham-Hams, have fun adventures with Boss and when the other hamsters' owners are almost home, they scurry home before the owners knew anything unusual. I still wonder why Laura, Hamtaro's owner, had the family name of Haruna even though her first name was American. That just plain confuses me about some anime characters. I've always preferred the ending song over the opening theme (the latter of which is so distant to me that I've actually forgotten how it goes!) Hamtaro is actually one of the few shows I know of that actually has a song at the end, instead of an instrumental version of the opening theme. Overall, very cute, and I don't care if it's for 4-10 year olds. I am autistic, so stuff from that age group interests me more often than not anyway!

A wonderful anime!
kurosantchi329 April 2013
This is one of the most delightful shows on TV. Even though it is clearly meant for younger children, it will always have a special place in my heart. There is a wide variety of characters to appeal to any audience, and each episode means a new adventure. The art is really adorable and the characters are beautifully drawn. It is also really funny. What could be more hilarious than cute little hamsters getting angry as heck? This is definitely one of the best anime of all time, and a lot better than most trashy cartoons they show on TV. If you like playful little animals, definitely watch this anime! It doesn't have the violence and obscenity of many other anime out there.

Little Hamsters, Big Adventures
harley_nicks6926 June 2002
It's a cute show, and it's good. The facts that I'm 22 years old and a show that seems to be aimed at the 8 & Under Club held my interest for more than a minute should attest to that.

I tuned in expecting a show about a world populated by hamsters and other animals alone, and I got a show about hamsters and their owners. Particularly the main hamster, Hamtaro, and his 10-year-old owner Laura. The general gist of the show is that Laura's family has moved to a new town, and her hamster Hamtaro, who's vastly smarter than she knows (she still thinks he can't get out of his cage, silly girl), makes all kinds of new friends.

The world of these hamsters is basically a mimic of the human world; hamsters seem to have the skills and personality quirks of their owners. And every episode, there's a situation that Laura faces that is duplicated in the hamsters' lives - Laura's dad loses his glasses, Hamtaro gets some of his friends to help look for them; Hamtaro follows Laura to school, and gets an idea for a hamster school; Laura gets a crush on a boy, a girl hamster has a crush on a boy hamster. So on and so forth.

In particular, the hamsters seem to view it as their mission to take care of their owners. Just listen to one of the lyrics in the theme song: "If she heads for trouble, we won't let her.: In one episode Hamtaro thinks he made Laura sick by keeping her up all night (she just needed a nap), and another hamster tells him: "Humans mean responsibility. If you can't take care of your human, you shouldn't have her."

Overall, if you're into cute, it's a cool show. I'd still rather have a show that's less about real life in the human aspect (I have to live real life every day, after all, I don't need to see it in cartoons), but this is okay.

Warning: any kid over 8 or 9 will probably be less into this show and more into one of the DB shows or shows of that nature.

A very sweet show

Warning: Spoilers
A very sweet, cute show. Definately not made for cynical people who hate everything and think they are "cool" for hating everything.

The guy calling this "idiotic baby drivel" reminds me of my edgy teenage years, and I really hope the person who wrote it has already grown out from that kind of puerile cynicism.

The other guy, who claims this show is "empty and pointless" is just a boring troll (Perfect example of modern day "ironic" cynicism)

I really loved this show back then. It reminded me of the hamsters I used to have as my pets when I was a kid. And if you don't like hamsters, why are you even watching this?

Cute hamsters star in Japanese animated children's series
BrianDanaCamp23 June 2002
"Hamtaro" is a Japanese animated TV series first shown in 2000 and then introduced in the U.S. on the Cartoon Network on June 3, 2002. Focusing on a band of hamsters, it's one of the first Japanese series shown in the U.S. to be aimed at very young children. As such, parents should be more comfortable with it than they've been with the constant fighting and battle action on such other Japanese animated children's favorites as "Pokémon," "Digimon," "Dragon Ball Z" and "Sailor Moon." Children aged seven and up, however, will most certainly prefer the greater excitement found in "Pokémon" et al. That said, "Hamtaro" remains a genuinely charming entry for children aged 2-6 and boasts some very nice design, distinguished by bold lines and bright colors, and simple, efficient animation.

The title character is part of a growing band of "Ham-Hams," pet hamsters in a suburban neighborhood who sneak out of their homes to congregate in the well-furnished underground burrow of Boss, a field hamster who guides them on their adventures. Hamtaro is the pet of Laura, an elementary schoolgirl whose close friend and classmate, Kana, is also a hamster lover and has one of her own, Oxnard. Each episode tends to highlight a problem of Laura's or a project she's undertaking and then have the hamsters replicate it in their own world. When Laura has difficulty figuring out what to give her parents for Christmas, the hamsters endeavor to make sure Santa Claus remembers Boss on Christmas morning. When Laura and Kana have to come up with a piece for the school newspaper, the hamsters decide to start their own newspaper. (They're quite a literate bunch.) The hamsters talk to each other, but are unable to communicate verbally with their owners, except in a dream sequence in one episode where Hamtaro is a knight who comes to rescue Princess Laura from the Wicked Ham Wizard (Boss).

Hamtaro's design closely follows that found in the children's books by Ritsuko Kawai that provided the basis for this series. The hamsters are generally cute and cuddly, somewhat reminiscent of "Pokemon"'s Pikachu, and are differentiated from each other in clever ways. The English dubbing is generally good, although some of the hamsters have far-fetched accents that are not easily explainable. The design of Laura and her friends is different from the books and more typical of anime, resembling more closely the girls in "Cardcaptors." As of this writing, the original books are not available in the U.S. in English, although Japanese language editions can be found.

Shogakukan, the publisher of the books, produced the original series and supervised its English adaptation, maintaining a degree of control often lost to Japanese companies when a series of theirs is adapted for the U.S. market. The key change from the original is the replacement of Japanese signs with English ones in the homes and street scenes, although some Japanese lettering is visible to sharp-eyed viewers throughout.

Anime fans will want to see this out of curiosity, but will probably balk at the straight children's show approach and lack of abstract elements and fantasy touches found in just about all anime series seen in America. Teens and twentysomethings who remember all the "pro-social" Saturday morning TV cartoons of the 1980s (e.g. "The Get-Along Gang," "Pound Puppies," "Smurfs," "Rainbow Brite" et al) may see some resemblances here, although the once overarching insistence on group contentment over individual desire is thankfully downplayed.

Chicka Chicka, Remember I'm a Ham!!!!
willow_chick883 July 2002
The fact that I watched this show in the first place is enough to show how anime deprived I am. After months and months of only DBZ on Toonami, the Cartoon Network got this show. The concept is easy to understand hamsters who meet during the day while their owners are wherever. The concept also shows that this is not a show that will likely attract "Cowboy Be Bop" fans. However despite my original misgivings, I find the show to be absolutely charming. It's more like American cartoons than most anime and doesn't have the rough fighting that is the hallmark of most anime series at least those that make it dubdom in the US. The show will be well liked by little kids though I forsee that hamsters will be one popular Christmas present this year for Hamtaro viewers. I also like that several of the best voice actors found in anime are voicing this show such as Brad Swaile and Ted Cole. Anyone under the age of 8 should love this show and anime fans should enjoy seeing a different style of anime,

I think it's cute too!!

I myself think that "Hamtaro" is a cute anime myself. I think Hamtaro, and his Ham Ham friends are adorable too. I love it since they go on all of those adventures. That just rocks! Overall, a very cute anime, better than that "Pokemon", or "Dragonball Z" garbage although it is intended for a much younger audience. 10/10.

Downright Cute!!!!!!!
waterjarvey25 August 2004
I first saw this show on cartoon network and I became hooked on it.It's so adorable, and it's different from a lot of other anime.I mean, who doesn't love little talking hamsters?!? Oh, I heard that the movie was supposed to come out in America in November of 2003, but they canceled it!!!!Why?!? Oh well, maybe it will come out this year.... The animation is great, and it makes up for it's shortness by it's cuteness!!! If you are one of those people who only like fighting anime, then you should look somewhere else. I think that kids and adults of all ages would like this anime. Overall, i give it a 5 out of 5... Actually, I'll give it 10 out of 5!!! You have got to see this show!

I think the show would be better if the show was more Boss heavy.
sroby98911 July 2003
If you want wacky off the wall entertainment may i highly recommend this action/comedy/drama. The star of this show is pretty cool but is highly out classed by his fellow ham-ham Boss (the field ham). The outsider afraid to involve himself with others really steals the show. A tourmented soul really he lived alone and followed his own rule, "Only look out for number 1" ya know why he lived by his rule... because it's the only one that would work, thats why! He seemed all alone until a fellow ham-ham Bijou a hampster from France stole something of his...his heart. Their relationship is a forever changing and evolving friendship. Don't write off this master peice because it stars hampsters. They will steal your heart, you'll laugh you'll cry and best of all it's fun for all ages. If you liked Memphis Belle than you'll love this show too.

Like adding several spoonfuls of sugar to your Pepsi
wolfofmoonandsun25 October 2004
Watching Hamtaro is a lot like eating paint chips. It's semi-interesting and even sweet, but before long you realize your brain is turning into a thin, soupy mush.

I used to have a hamster named Sakura and before she met an untimely death a few months after I'd bought her, I think she could have written a better plot than this. Hamtaro is a fuzzy wittle hamster who lives with his owner (named Laura and voiced by Moneca Stori, who turned Kagome from Inuyasha into a giggly moron and killed what was a wonderful anime). Every day when she scampers off to school, he goes to a tiny little clubhouse to play with his fuzzy wittle hamster friends and have all kinds of adorable adventures in their brightly colored world. Egh, I feel dirty just writing about it.

The little vermin are referred to as "ham-hams." It's supposed to be cute, for some reason-personally, I like "hamster" much better. It conjures up pictures of a chubby, fluffy little rodent and not of a pig's dirty end. In an effort to cram more cute down our throats, most of the ham-hams wear clothes and drink tea, though I don't know where they got the fire to make it. They even have wee little teacups! :D :) :l :( :(_ _ X(

Some things about this show are downright disturbing. I'm talking about Boss, the lead hamster, and his perverted lust-er, sorry, "crush" on a pretty little French hamster named Bijou. If Boss were a human, I'd say he'd be in his late 40s to early 50s. Bijou looks and sounds like she's 8. So apparently pedophilia is funny! Tee hee!

No matter what the episode, they all end the same way. Laura writes in her diary with Hamtaro sitting nearby. They both replay the day's events, just in case the viewer gave up on caring and went to go get some danish. Laura closes her diary and says to Hamtaro, with a big, possibly Ritalin induced smile, something along the lines of "That was a great day we had. And I bet tomorrow will be even better!" Maybe, Laura. Or maybe your parents will be hit by a car. Oops, you guessed wrong! Off ya go to live with cruel foster parents.

Then the credits roll and Hamtaro does a mildly suggestive dance, freeing us until the next episode.

I watched this show for a while simply because it actually was sort of cute, especially the hamsters' made up language (consisting of words like "heke?", "kush, kush, kush", and Penelope's "Ookyu!" **** you indeed, you little sweetie!) But even that was taken away. Now the hamsters all have tiny bodies and ugly, bulbous heads instead being pudgy and at least slightly realistic. And there goes any chance of Hamtaro being watchable.

Bottom line: This isn't anime, this is nonsense. Send it back to the fiery, sugary depths it came from. If want to see cute talking rodents, I'll watch Secret of NIMH or maybe Redwall. Give me the intelligence and loyalty of a rat any day.

Michael Jackson would like this...
AndyGenerationX3 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Has anyone seen this? It came out sometime in the 1990s when it first FYI it's these Hamsters who are the Mains in this show - I know it doesn't sound like much from that description but it IS!! There are great stories which are sort of "People stuff" Mixed with "Hamster stuff" the hamsters have also been given Human ages (Most of them are supposed to be 15-16 except for a few one of thems a kid/baby and another is in his late 30's) Another aspect that made this show popular and controversial is that there are references to Michael Jackson (He FYI was a singer/dancer in the 80s) Most pacifically is a character "Hamtaro" is very similar in personality to Michael (There was an interview with some of the writers in 1995 saying that's what the writers where after maybe there fans of Wacko Jacko?) In a later year (2000 or after i'm not sure) Ham-Ham FINALLY made it to America but a lot of it was edited (The UK and JPN version are the same -'cept for the language) The story was dumbed down and certain scenes where cut and the hamsters "human ages" where never revealed their - All to hide the fact that a 30-ish hamster had taken to a 16 hamster.

In a similar manner the MJ stuff got removed because of Michael being in trouble with the police over false accusations - and it's still going on!!) The USA version isn't THAT bad but I prefer the version I grew up with. And it is still a brilliant show (It reminds me of Soaps but I dunno if it is one. And I'm practically "Addict".

Idiotic baby drivel
Hancock_the_Superb11 December 2002
As I've said in my review of "Pokemon The First Movie", I hate anime (at least what I've seen). Nonetheless, since there is a strike going on at our school, and there's nothing better to do, I decided to sit down and watch this show. I knew ahead of time that it would be idiotic and baby-oriented, and though I tried to like it, I could find nothing to like.

The characters are obviously cutsey-pie (think Pikachu and Togepi combined to the thousandth power), and that gets annoying. The standard really annoying Japanimation sight gags (bubbles coming out of sleeping characters' noses [WTF?], sweat drops, and, of course, the ever popular "Falling over backwards in unison when confronted with something you don't like" syndrome) are all here. The animation is typically horrible and way too bright.

Nonetheless, if you are a) four years old or younger, b) a person as smart as a cauliflour, or c) a really messed-up girl obsessed with "cute" (i.e., small) things, then you'll find this enjoyable. Personally, my brothers and I had to MST3K-it and we had something of a good time . . . but there's half an hour of my life I'll never have back . ..

Bottom line: I'll take "Invader Zim", "Blackadder II", "The X Files", "Spongebob Squarepants", and even the dreaded "Pokemon" over this anyday.

No stars whatsoever.

PS: In the episode I watched, one of the hamsters said something like, "Looks like we did it!" and another one (probably the annoying yellow squeaky one) said something that sounded like "Oh, f*** you!" Really! I don't think this was intentional, but it's hilarious all the same.
