Establishing a shared cinematic universe is hard. Take Warner Bros. and DC's attempt at matching the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for instance. Though it had some commercial successes, the DC Extended Universe ultimately disintegrated over the course of several recent box office bombs that included superheroic flop "The Flash." Then, there was Universal, with its ill-fated Dark Universe, which would have seen updated takes on classic Universal monsters inhabiting a shared timeline that would ultimately lead to some sort of monster team-up. Unfortunately, the whole thing failed almost instantly with the disappointment that was 2017's "The Mummy."
Now, with the almighty MCU even struggling to maintain its dominance amid the deluge of "content" being pumped out in its name, it seems harder than ever to construct and maintain a successful shared cinematic universe. But that won't stop horror director Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who is now threatening an entire interconnected...

Charlize Theron’s 2002 critically panned thriller, Trapped, finds new popularity on Netflix’s Top 10
Sometimes, movies that fail to make a splash when they’re initially released find a new audience later in life. It isn’t unheard of that a movie that flopped and exhibited a low critical response can gain a cult following or even newfound popularity. John Carpenter’s career is kind of filled with movies like this. The early 2000s had seen a slew of mid-budget thrillers in an era before mega-budget franchises took over cinemas. One of those films is a 2002 psychological thriller titled Trapped.
Trapped would seemingly get lost in a sea of movies like Along Came a Spider or Enough, as well as similar crime-thriller genre movies made popular by Ashley Judd with films like Double Jeopardy, High Crimes and Twisted. According to ScreenRant, the Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon film has found new popularity when it cracked Netflix’s Top 10 Movies along with new movies like The Equalizer 3,...

Back in its heyday, How To Get Away With Murder was one of the hottest shows on television.
Thursday nights on ABC were once the night that Shonda Rhimes built from start to finish, with Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and the aforementioned legal drama setting the interwebs on fire every week.
The series was a bonafide hit from the start and constantly had social media ablaze as viewers were thrust into murderous coverups and shocking twists every season.
It’s been over three years since the series signed off, and while we’re still reliving all the bloody mayhem during our various rewatches, the cast has moved on to other projects. And what projects might those be? Let’s look at what the cast of How To Get Away With Murder is doing now!

Like its two recent multi-disc predecessors, Joni Mitchell Archives — Volume 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975) collects live and studio vault tapes from a particular era in Mitchell’s career. This one gets off to a seemingly unbeatable start. Much of its first quarter is devoted to an entire live show from Carnegie Hall in 1971, months after Mitchell’s landmark album Blue had been released. Sounding at the top of her game, vocally and instrumentally, Mitchell opens with a swooping, vivacious “This Flight Tonight.” Accompanying herself on guitar, piano and dulcimer,...

Led Zeppelin will likely never regroup. Robert Plant started his lengthy and successful solo career soon after the band broke up. His solo songs did what Zep never could — win Grammy awards — and he’s not too keen on revisiting the past. Except for when Plant sang backup to Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider on Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” after tricking Snider into singing at a wedding.

“The Idol,” the controversial HBO series set to star pop sensation Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, grows nearer. And after the announcement that the series would premiere out of competition at next month’s Cannes Film Festival, The Weeknd has started previewing music from the show, performing a new track (“Double Fantasy”) at Coachella last night and on his Instagram two days ago (where he can be seen working on the orchestra intro for the song). Ready or not, “The Idol” is coming.
The Weeknd wasn’t even on the bill for Coachella but popped in during Metro Boomin’s set on Friday. Mike Dean, the influential record producer (who also has a role on “The Idol”), was also on hand to play saxophone on “Double Fantasy,” which is the first substantial new Weeknd music (outside of his track for “Avatar: The Way of Water”) since he released his brilliant album “Dawn F.

Production on Season one of Peacock’s upcoming TV adaptation of Twisted Metal is in the books. The series’ writer and executive producer Michael Jonathan Smith announced via Twitter earlier this week (along with a picture of an ice sculpture of the series’ logo) that production on the first season had completed filming.
Smith elaborated in subsequent tweets, saying that the cast and crew for production on Twisted Metal “was something special.” This was in spite of typical production issues such as “lightning delays, extreme heat, and cars that wouldn’t do as they’re told”.
The series now heads to post-production, which will no doubt involve adding flames to Sweet Tooth’s head. Jonathan likened the last day of shooting to the last day of summer camp, with “lots of laughs, a few tears, and ice cream being handed out the back of Sweet Tooth’s truck.”

Cursed Films, the documentary series from Jay Cheel, has been part of the Shudder lineup for months now, but now the five-part project that dives into the stories behind a variety of movies including The Omen, The Exorcist, The Crow, The Twilight Zone: The Movie, and Poltergeist, is headed home today on both Blu-ray and DVD, courtesy of the fine folks at Rlje Films.
Daily Dead had the opportunity to catch up with Cheel recently and during our interview, he discussed how Cursed Films came together at Shudder as well as his experiences during the interview process for the series, the controversy surrounding the tragic deaths on Twilight Zone: The Movie, and more.
First of all, congratulations on season two. Getting to come back, that has got to be a really good feeling for you, I'm sure.

Writer/director Jay Cheel's love for the strange has been on display in pretty much all of his work, including his two feature documentaries Beauty Day and How to Build a Time Machine. And so his venture into TV feels like it was perfectly suited for the director, especially on the heels of his short film Twisted in which he explored a bizarre 1996 event in which a drive-in theatre playing the movie Twister was destroyed by a tornado.
Written and directed by Cheel, "Cursed Films," currently streaming on Shudder, is a five-part documentary series, exploring the myths and legends behind some of Hollywood's doomed productions, often thought to be cursed. Over the course of the series, Cheel takes a deep-dive into The Exorcist, Poltergeist, The...

The League of Legends 10.15 patch notes focus on the Spirit Blossom Festival and introduces a new champion named Lillia.
“The Dreaming Tree grew from a seed of the God-Willow, which towered over the ancient grove of Omikayalan,” reads a description of Lillia’s lore on the League of Legends website. “Lillia was born when one of the tree’s own dreams was captured in a bud that fell to the ground before it could bloom—something that had never happened before. Without Spike & Mike, two hippie friends from Riverside, California, who pioneered the animation festival in the late ’70s, the indie short wouldn’t have become the cultural phenomenon that has helped shaped the industry today. That’s the takeaway of the celebratory documentary, “Animation Outlaws,” directed by stop-motion animator Kat Alioshin (“The Nightmare Before Christmas”), available now on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu, Fandango Now, PlayStation, and Vimeo.
“Beyond anybody in the world, we stepped up and did it first, and premiered it first, and made it first — and that’s why the documentary is so important to me,” said Spike Decker, who first promoted rock bands and classic horror movies with the late Mike Gribble (who passed away from cancer in ’94) before segueing into animation festivals. Get used to hearing Rina Sawayama’s name in every conversation about what’s hot in pop this year. The Japan-born, U.K.-raised singer-model’s debut album, Sawayama, is a thrilling musical adventure, expertly referencing the chaos of Top 40 at the turn of the century without getting too hung up on the nostalgia of it all. Combining crunchy nu-metal guitar riffs with a penchant for early-aughts R&b-pop production in the vein of Aaliyah and ‘NSync, Sawayama sounds like Britney Spears’ Blackout by way of Korn — and it inexplicably works.

Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s previously leaked battle royale mode, called Warzone, is real and set to release for all available platforms on March 10.
Undoubtedly the biggest piece of info to drop from this reveal is the fact that Modern Warfare’s battle royale mode will be free-to-play. Yes, that means that you won’t need to purchase Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in order to play it. That’s a big change from Black Ops 4’s Blackout battle royale mode, which came as part of that title’s retail launch package.
