The Strongest Versions of Godzilla's Atomic Breath, Ranked
Image
The first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Godzilla is a kaiju of mammoth size and immense strength who leaves behind only death and ruin. What people often forget is that Godzilla is also a walking nuclear reactor. The energy beam blasts from his mouth come out as a byproduct of his internal fission reaction. Called the atomic breath, this high-temperature, kinetic energy attack has become the King of the Monsters' signature weapon over the years.

The destructive power of Godzilla's atomic breath is inconsistent. It changes with each era and each movie, according to the purpose it serves in the narrative. But in recent times, Godzilla's atomic breath has been getting astronomically stronger with his size. The strongest atomic breaths are terribly powerful and hauntingly beautiful, immortalizing moments from Godzilla's illustrious history and reminding humans of how puny they are.

New Toho Godzilla Movie In Development
Image
More Godzilla is on the way. The Japanese kaiju franchise, which follows the titular giant irradiated lizard either wreaking havoc or defending humanity from other giant monsters, kicked off in 1954. It has since expanded to include 33 Japanese-language Godzilla movies and five English-language installments. Toho has produced and distributed every Japanese installment, most recently the 2023 smash critical and commercial hit Godzilla Minus One.

Via the Godzilla Official X account, Toho has now announced that a new Godzilla movie has been greenlit. The movie will once again be spearheaded by Godzilla Minus One writer, director, and VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki. The announcement was made via a short video posing as an emergency Sos message, underscored by an urgent snippet of one of the iconic musical themes for the franchise composed by Akira Ifukube. See their post below:

Evangelion's Unit 01 Becomes a Kaiju in New International Godzilla Release
Image
The Neon Genesis Evangelion series has had frequent collaborations with various other brands. One of them is the monstrous Godzilla, with this concept manifesting in an angel-fighting version of the kaiju's mechanical doppelgnger.

A new figure titled "Toei Great Kaiju Series Type-3 Kiryu (2002) Heavy Armament Type, Eva Unit-01 Color" recasts Mechagodzilla in the iconic color scheme of the main mecha from Evangelion. Available internationally, and part of a collaboration series by collectible developer Plex, the new figure is a more heroic take on a classic villain. It also seems to have light-based features, allowing "Kiryu" to light up the fight against the angels of Evangelion.

Japan's Most Bizarre Crossover Highlights Barbenheimer's Biggest Missed Opportunity
Image
Barbenheimer was an unprecedented cultural event. Born from two vastly different movies marketed at different audiences, with zero things in common other than a release date and the fact that they had big budgets, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" somehow inspired a totally organic, fan-driven "crossover." Granted, it was never really a proper crossover, and neither film's marketing campaigns acknowledged the other's, but fans didn't care. As much as the cultural conversation was aware, Barbenheimer was real, and it made both "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" hugely successful at the box office.

Indeed, the fan-made double feature caught on, and soon enough thousands of people were planning to watch both halves of Barbenheimer back-to-back on release day, embracing each film as part of a whole rather than play into box office competition. But years before people coined the term Barbenheimer, and even years before another brilliant piece of counter programming made both "The Dark Knight...

A Popular Godzilla x Mechagodzilla Toy Gets Re-Release After 20 Years
Image
One of the most popular villains in the Godzilla franchise is none other than his robotic doppelgnger, Mechagodzilla. Now, a figure of his most powerful incarnation is being re-released in Japan after over 20 years.

Manufactured by Aoshima, the 2002 Mfs-3 Type 3 Kiryu based on the villain's appearance from Godzilla x Mechagodzilla is coming back to online retailers. Highly pose-able and extremely detailed, it's the perfect representation of the movie that can also be used to recreate many scenes. Godzilla Minus One 2 Would Immediately Redeem A Broken Promise The Franchise Made 23 Years Ago
Image
A sequel to Godzilla Minus One is crucial to avoid repeating a broken promise from 23 years ago. Despite record-breaking success, Godzilla Minus One 2 is not in development as of now. The film's ending hints at Godzilla's return, setting up potential for more storytelling with the kaiju.

Warning: Spoilers for Godzilla Minus One

A broken promise from 23 years ago would be repeated for a second time if a Godzilla Minus One sequel doesn't happen. Godzilla Minus One's record-breaking box office success created hope for a follow-up, but as impressive as its haul may be, a sequel remains far from a guarantee. As it stands, Godzilla Minus One 2 is not in development.

While Toho has thus far been coy about continuing Godzilla's story, the movie itself paints a different picture. In fact, Godzilla Minus One's ending goes along way toward setting up another movie. In addition to the...

Godzilla Vs. Kong's Screenwriter Tried To Bring Mechagodzilla Into An Earlier Film
Image
Godzilla has always been super cool, but what about a Godzilla that's actually a mechsuit? Well, Mechagodzilla was originally intended as an antithesis for the king of monsters, representing attempts to squash a force of nature that wreaks havoc or acts as a benevolent mediator, depending on who you ask. The Gundam version of Godzilla first appeared in 1974's "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla," where a bunch of aliens from Black Hole Planet 3 built a massive robot monster to destroy Godzilla and take over the planet. After thwarted attempts to take down the Og prehistoric beast, humans took matters into their own hands to craft a high-endurance, super-powerful cyborg in 2002's "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla," who teamed up with other beasts like Mothra to put Godzilla down (and failed).

Coming to the MonsterVerse, Mechagodzilla made its first appearance in Adam Wingard's "Godzilla vs. Kong," where the mecha is controlled telepathically by Ren...

Akane Yashiro: Nothing So Strong as Gentleness
Image
by Alyssa Charpentier

“Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength,” remarked Francis de Sales. This seemingly contradictory adage finds a home not only in the 16th century but also in female movie characters from the Japanese Godzilla series. The Godzilla saga, which celebrates its 70th birthday this year, features numerous inspiring women. Refer to “Gojira,” the 1954 original, for a glimpse at its first, Emiko Yamane (Momoko Kochi). Emiko's tender heart shines in her caregiving for the film's wounded and her convictions that compel scientist Daisuke Serizawa to use his apocalyptic Oxygen Destroyer device against Godzilla. Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe) is the franchise's most recent figure of female endurance in “Godzilla Minus One” (2023): she courageously rears a small child—not even her own—following postwar Japan's devastation while living with an emotionally tortured, disgraced young Kamikaze who doesn't intend to marry her (a precarious...

Godzilla Minus One director is interested in making a sequel with a kaiju battle in it

Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. The film made its way over to the United States in December… and it became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America even before a black and white version was released under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Director Takashi Yamazaki has let it be known that he’s interested in making a sequel, and during a new interview with Empire magazine he revealed that he would like to feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action in the follow-up, if Toho lets him make it!

Yamazaki said, “I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state...

Godzilla Minus One Sequel Chances Following Shocking Ending Reveal Addressed By Director
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Godzilla Minus One.

The director of Godzilla Minus One expressed his desire to make a sequel after fulfilling his dream of making a Godzilla movie. He said that he felt "lonely" after making the movie and wants to direct one more. The shocking Godzilla Minus One ending suggests that one of the main characters may have developed radiation poisoning and that Godzilla may not be truly dead.

The director of Godzilla Minus One has addressed a potential sequel. The movie, which is the 33rd Japanese-language Godzilla movie produced by Toho, is a post-World War II drama following former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) attempting to rebuild his life in a war-torn Tokyo along with the similarly orphaned Noriko Ōishi (Minami Hamabe), only to have the city threatened by the emergence of the giant monster Godzilla. While the movie ended with Godzilla defeated and the couple reunited,...

‘Shin Godzilla’ – The Lovecraftian Horrors of the Cosmic Monster Movie
Image
Monsters have been representing primal fears since time immemorial, and the best of them are capable of adapting to evolving societal fears. From werewolves occasionally becoming metaphors for puberty to zombies going from supernatural slaves to viral consumerism, there’s plenty of multifaceted creatures to choose from. That’s why it’s fitting that the King of the Monsters himself has seen so many wildly different variations over the years.

Originally a physical manifestation of the fear of the atomic bomb, with the first film being produced a mere 7 years after the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Godzilla would end up spawning a multimedia franchise as the radioactive dinosaur accidentally became a national icon. Over time, toys, games and countless toned-down sequels ended up diluting the character’s original purpose: to terrify audiences as a giant monster inspired by real-world horrors.

While several of these sequels would attempt to...

The Correct Order To Watch All Of The Godzilla Movies
Image
U.S. audiences tend to accept Toho's earlier Godzilla movies as being high camp, usually thanks to Gen-x's half-remembered airings of late-'60s kaiju flicks broadcast on Uhf TV channels back in the 1980s. While there are some absurd and terrible Godzilla films from the Showa era (1954-1975), and many of them contained surreal, kitschy plot elements like invading aliens, one might also find several movies -- "Gojira," "Destroy All Monsters" -- that focus on Japanese national pride, the role of destructive weapons in the world, and a barely-simmering resentment lingering after a massive attack on the country. If modern superhero movies sprung from the U.S. subconscious as a fantastical revenge/preventative measure against 9/11, so too did Godzilla spring fully formed from the trauma left behind by the U.S.' atomic bomb attacks.

In the original "Gojira," that is literal. The titular creature, a stories-high amphibious animal,...

Godzilla 2000 is set to return to theaters in November
Image
The most famous kaiju in the world is set to make his triumphant rerelease to the big screen in more ways than one. The resurgence of Godzilla has blown up almost as big as the monster itself. The U.S. retried our hand at the gargantuan creature with 2014’s Godzilla, which aimed for redemption from the 1998 name-only version. That reintroduction spawned a monster-verse with King Kong getting his own reboot and culminating in a rumble for the film Godzilla vs. Kong. Not only is there to be a spin-off series with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters featuring the “Gorilla-whale,” but this December sees a new era with the Toho film Godzilla Minus One.

Fans of the series can now also celebrate the introduction of the Millennium series as Godzilla-movies.com reveals that special screenings of Godzilla 2000 will be shown at AMC theaters courtesy of Fathom Events. Fandango has listed the...

Why Only 1 Godzilla Movie Made The Humans The True Villains
Image
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II stands out as the one Godzilla movie where the human characters are the true antagonists of the story. Godzilla's roles in his movies tend to vary, but the same doesn’t really apply to the humans. Whether Godzilla is their enemy or not, they're generally portrayed as the protagonists.

In most Godzilla movies, the goals of the human characters are largely consistent. Regardless of who the threat is, their focus is on averting destruction. Sometimes, that involves thwarting Godzilla, investigating mysterious activities, or foiling a plot masterminded by aliens. In some situations, such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters, rogue groups of humans are at the heart of the problem, forcing the movie's main characters to rise up and stop them. One movie that quietly deviates from the formula is Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. Released in 1993, the fifth installment in the Heisei series saw Godzilla...

Why The Oxygen Destroyer Was Only Used Once In Toho’s Godzilla Movies
Image
The Oxygen Destroyer was a proven success in the original Godzilla movie, yet it was never used again in Toho’s movies. Invented by Dr. Serizawa, the Oxygen Destroyer is remembered as the weapon that killed Godzilla in the monster’s big-screen debut in 1954. Its role in the movie confirmed that despite Godzilla’s power level, humans are indeed capable of taking him down by technological means.

The Oxygen Destroyer exists in the canon of most Godzilla stories, so it would make sense if it was the first option the military turned to when Godzilla returned. Instead, the humans relied on tanks, fighter jets, and new weapons created specifically for fighting Godzilla. Across most of his movie appearances, Godzilla has faced limited difficulty in getting past the military. The humans were so desperate for a way to stop Godzilla that they even invented robot kaiju like Mechagodzilla and Moguera. Occasionally,...

Godzilla’s 6 Best Fights In Toho’s Movies, Ranked
Image
The plentiful, kaiju-on-kaiju action in Toho's movies have paved the way for a long list of exciting Godzilla battles to take place on the big screen. They may not happen in every film (or even in his film debut), but monster fights are a fundamental part of the Godzilla franchise. His battles with other kaiju have a lot to do with what have allowed him to endure as a pop culture icon for more than 60 years.

Godzilla's history of fighting other monsters dates all the way back to his second movie - Godzilla Raids Again - when he clashed with Anguirus. Since then, he's gone up against a number of powerful monsters in Toho's Godzilla universe, including King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, Mothra. The circumstances have varied with Godzilla's roles in these encounters ranging from hero, to villain, to anti-hero. True to his title of the King of the Monsters, Godzilla usually comes out on top,...

60 Years of Godzilla: A History and Critique of the Greatest Monster Movie Series in Cinema
**Massive spoilers for every Godzilla movie, with the exception of the 2014 reboot, and Mothra follow**

August 6th and 9th, 1945 forever changed the course of history. When the first nuclear bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, World War II ended, but a new fear was born that dominated the thoughts of all men, women, and children for decades to come. The Cold War, atomic bomb testing, a cartoon turtle telling children to “duck and cover”, and this new technology that had the actual potential to literally end the world changed the perception of what was scary. Art reflects life, so cinema began to capitalize on these fears. Gone were the days of creepy castles, cobwebs, bats, vampires, werewolves, and the other iconic images that ruled genre cinema in film’s earliest decades. Science fiction was larger than ever and giant ants, giant octopi, terror from beyond the stars, and...

He was the ultimate threat.

By his fifth and sixth films, however, The Three...
