A mess it is, but not

because shot a 'beautiful' gangster movie. There is nothing beautiful in this movie: lighting is flat and the composition of the frames are uninteresting at best. It's a mess because the story is totally inconclusive. After watching it on the big screen all that's memorable is a monster shoot out at the end. Sound design is unbearable with all its bigger than life gunshots and door slams. The production tried to make a Hollywood style epic but failed miserably.

Just the music score

No actors, no script, no director, no movie. Naceri is a typically good boy. Perfect for Taxi, but not for this movie. Since, he is the worst actor in this movie. His _character_ is a mad, fanatic criminal offender, but he can't show us. The one good thing in the movie: the music score. Otherwise the worst movie that I had been ever see.

independent style mob-movie, great story!!!

This is an excellent film. It's classic mob-drama. Something we've forgotten in this age of kung-fu fighting, wire-swinging, bullet-dodging one-liner screen-heroes. The acting is outstanding. Samy Naceri & Samuel Le Bihan are an impressive duo, in particular Samuel Le Bihan is very convincing as the violent gangster with a past he's trying to forget and a life he's trying to straighten out. Inevitably his past catches up with him...

A Hard-Boiled, Bullet-Blasting French Crime Thriller with An Old-Fashioned Sense of Morality

French writer & director Manuel Boursinhac's "The Code" qualifies as an old-fashioned, slam-bang, fast-paced, wages of crime morality thriller about gang rivalry among Gallic gangsters. Scenarist Bibi Naceri, who helped pen "District B-13" with legendary French maestro Luc Besson, co-wrote this gritty underworld yarn with Boursinhac. "The Code" compares favorably with Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas." Although this urban actioneer has its share of daylight scenes, the overall effect that writer & director Boursinhac achieves is one of film noir. The vulnerable but sympathetic ex-con hero finds his life spiraling out of control and his lust for the wrong woman dragging him back to a life of larceny. The chief criticism of "The Code" is that is represents the umpteenth time that a filmmaker has made a crime saga about a criminal struggling to resist the urge to perform one last job. Predictable, despite its upbeat romantic wrap-up, this grim gang war opus contains several strong scenes, several brilliant performances, and a depth not usually trod by its competitors. The Columbia DVD region 1 release that I saw of this above-average French thriller preserved its widescreen format and rookie cinematographer Kevin Johnson's spartan compositions add volumes to the atmosphere. Everything has a slightly skewed effect with a grainy appearance to the film itself suggesting its abrasive locales and morality.

Dris (Samuel L. Bihan of "Brotherhood of the Wolf") has been out of jail briefly as the story unfolds and he is trying to traipse the straight and narrow with a renewed commitment to his wife Lise (Marie Guillard of "The Fifth Element) and a low-paying job at a food market. Dris has two younger brothers. Yanis (Sammy Naceri of "The Professional") is the older of the two, hot-headed, greedy, and fiercely devoted to his brothers if his monetary interests can be served. On the other hand, Mel (David Saracino) is the youngest, a good car thief, but even more hot-headed and uncontrollable than his opportunist brother Yanis. Yanis has engineered armored car heist planned with inside help, but he insists that Dris join them the action. Dris is understandably reluctant. He loves his wife and he wants to stay straight, but Yanis is determined to have Dris on the team no matter what it takes. Yanis visits Lise and defiantly warns her that he will ruin their relationship if she doesn't loosen her hold on Dris. No sooner has he said and done this than he trots out Dris's former girlfriend, a Gypsy sex kitten named Nina (Clotilde Courau), to lure him back to a life of crime. Dris comes crawling back to Lise with apologies in hand and begs her to forgive him. Nevertheless, Dris winds up involved with Yanis more on account of his youngest brother Mel who finds himself in trouble with another mob. The scene where Yanis and Dris nearly kick a drug dealer to death is the high point of this melodrama. Essentially, this gripping scene represents the turning point of the action. Unwittingly, Dris finds himself infected by his contagiously evil sibling and emotionally drawn back to crime when he defends his youngest brother. Eventually, Mel winds up in deeper trouble than either Dris or Yanis can get him out of this side of the grave.

Indeed, "The Code" covers familiar enough ground but Boursinhac doesn't squander a second in this realistic portrayal of contemporary French criminals and their boundary disputes that have tragic consequences. Boursinhac only pulls his punches in the hopelessly romantic finale after a brutal gunfight between the two gangs. Boursinhac's crisp direction and the superlative performances by Sammy Naceri as the combustible Yanis and David Saracino as the car thief whose ego is too big for his britches fuel this feverish thriller. "The Code" is as an old-fashion crime melodrama because the good guys are rewarded with survival for their virtue and the villains are punished with death for their criminal deeds.

Another Great French Crime Movie

Dris (Samuel Le Bihan) is an ex-con, living in the borderline between a decent and a criminal life. He has a regular and simple work and lives a simple life with his wife Lise (Marie Guillard) and loves his family. However, his childhood friends from his Arab community, including his best friend Yanis (Samy Naceri), are mobsters and his brother is a small time delinquent. Yanis tries to bring Dris back to his gang, and uses his former lover Nina (Clotilde Courau) to seduce him, taking him to expensive places to feel the importance of big money. Dris fights against the temptation, but an event will route him back to Yanis' gang and in a fight between gangs with tragic consequences for the whole community. "La Mentale" is another great French crime movie. The story is excellent, the performance of the whole cast is great and the music score is wonderful. The excellent French cinema is showing excellent thrillers, crime and horror movies. I do not understand the purpose or reason of some unfair reviews I glanced in IMDb. Probably these viewers intended to watch a Walt Disney cartoon, or maybe a French romance (they usually are excellent) and saw "La Mentale" by accident, because it is indeed an excellent mob movie. My vote is eight.

A good movie.

The story of a part of life between two friends in Paris. Boot come from outside the central of Paris, they come from the poor part, the difficult part, a city nearest Paris. They growth together and they start to steel motorbikes together. After four years in jail, the first man wants to stop definitely to live has a bandit and he wants to find the right way of live. A story where the gangs try to get more and more money and respect. The men want to get money quickly as possible and tray to follow they dreams and they illusions. A nice movie, may be nearest the reality of gangs. The presence of women stay outside the main history, near doesn't exist. Good presence of very good french actors and also the second job actors. A nice picture anyways and a very good screen-player. A movie to watch absolutely.Good Bibi.

Anyone could recognize this film as a tribute to HEAT and GOOD FELLAS in many scenes and characters, but that remains an excellent crime movie in the line of what the sixties or seventies gave us. Good character study and development. Gritty, poignant, especially the scene between Sami Naceri and his father, but I felt something ankward, clumsy, in the story telling though, I repeat, the intentions are honest and generous. Many clichés but we could not avoid them, not in this kind of film. Tragic, bloody, a real true French crime film, the rebirth of the early 2000s.

The director wants to make a beautiful gangster movie. From the cinematography to the music, it is beautiful. However, a beautiful movie and murderous gangs do not match quite well. If the director was making movies like 'Snow falling on Cedars' or 'Shine' then it would have been excellent. However, this film is just a mess.
