Jim Cantore, by far, is the best man on the program. He brings a lot of energy as well as professionalism to his broadcasts, not to mention a sound understanding and knowledge of what it is he's talking about. He's great in the studio and great on location. It's safe to say that if you live in a coastal town, no matter how much you like him, he's the last person you want to see because you know that if he's in your town, something big is coming your way. Stephanie Abrams is also pretty good even though she is relatively new. The first time I can remember her doing any broadcasts was when she was on location for Hurricane Charley in 2004, when a crew member actually had to physically hold her feet so she wouldn't be blown away. She was pretty much in the path of all of the hurricanes in 2004 so I got used to seeing her. I miss John Hope. I know it's been a few years since his death but the man is simply someone unmatched in expertise on the Tropics. Don't get me wrong, Dr. Steve Lyons is really good, but John Hope was truly great.
Now, about The Weather Channel in general, is it just me or is more broadcast time spent on commercials? This is The Weather Channel. Shouldn't the majority of the air time be dedicated to forecasts and reports? And wouldn't you think that any sponsors would understand that the priority is notifying the public about the weather? If the weather stories are few and far between then I'd understand, but when the sirens are going off in my city and a tornado is about ready to touch down in my back yard, I really, REALLY don't care about Miracle Grow or the Home Depot. I care about seeing Dr. Greg Forbes give his expert analysis on the severe weather situation. "Storm Stories" is okay as is "It Could Happen Tomorrow" but really I watch The Weather Channel for one reason...TO SEE THE FREAKIN WEATHER REPORTS. I swear they should dedicate one channel to digital cable just for commercials so companies will be guaranteed some on air advertising. LEAVE THE WEATHER CHANNEL ALONE! If they can't get rid of the commercials, why not have a split screen like they did with the Indy 500. The race doesn't have media time outs, neither does the weather.
