- The year is 1998 and the place is Raccoon City, a small, reserved town in the American Midwest. In the heavily forested surroundings of this peaceful town a series of bizarre murders have been reported to have occurred, with both increasing ferocity and rate of occurrence. When a surviving pair of hikers were discovered at the outskirts of the city and laid claims of a dozen or so attackers who feasted upon their live victims, Raccoon City's police department decide to send in the Alpha Group from their resident specialists, STARS (Special Tactics and Rescue Squad). Alpha Squad set off into the Forest by helicopter, only to lose contact with base ten minutes into their flight. Beta Squad, consisting of Marksman Chris Redfield, Escape Specialist Jill Valentine, Weapons Specialist Barry Burton and Team Leader Albert Wesker amongst others, were subsequently dispatched to investigate their colleagues' disappearance. Ten minutes into their own flight the serious malfunction on the helicopter occurs and with little time to gather their senses the machine plunges violently to the Forest floor. Bruised and dazed, the surviving members of the crash stagger from the wreck, only to be savagely attacked by horrendously disfigured dogs, wreaking of blood and death. They scatter and run for their lives, discovering dismembered limbs of their Alpha Squad colleagues as they flee, until, one by one, they stumble upon a mysterious mansion with a looming entrance and invitingly strong looking doors. Jill, Chris, Barry and Wesker arrive one after another, before realising that none of their other team mates are likely to be following. They gather their thoughts in the grand front hall of the mammoth abode, deciding upon their escape plan, whilst simultaneously trying to get to grips with their horrendous situation. Wesker, team leader, takes charge, laying out how best to start the exploration of the building. They part ways, utterly unaware of the pure, unadulterated horror of what lies ahead. Horrific experiments, a ground breaking virus, mutated creatures and the walking dead are unknowingly the beginning what will result in a lifetime pursuit of answers and the evil that lies behind them.—Harry Jankel
- In July of 1998 many strange cannibal related murders have occurred in the mid-western town of Racoon City. On the 23rd the local police send an elite force, Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S) Bravo team to investigate, their helicopter goes missing in the Arklay Woods, their team was Captain Enrico Marini, communications expert Richard Aiken, pilot Edward Dewey, maintenance and sharpshooter Forest Speyer, chemist Kenneth J. Sullivan and field medic Rebecca Chambers.
On the 24th the S.T.A.R.S Alpha team is deployed to find them, Captain Albert Wesker, sharpshooter Chris Redfield, B&E specialist Jill Valentine, weapons specialist Barry Burton, weapons and vehicle maintenance Joseph Frost and pilot Brad Vickers. The Bravo helicopter is found deserted in the woods and a pack of vicious dogs attack Frost killing him, the dogs target the other S.T.A.R.S members, Vickers flees in the helicopter and the remaining members take shelter in a distant mansion.
Only four make it, Wesker, Redfield, Valentine and Burton. Redfield and Valentine investigate a gunshot and find a zombie-looking person feasting on Bravo member Kenneth Sullivan. They go to report to Wesker only to find he's disappeared without a trace, the remaining members split up to find their comrades.
The entire mansion is occupied by carnivorous lifeforms, all have become zombified, many Bravo members are found dead or dying, save for Rebecca Chambers the team medic. Further investigations divulge the presence of a major pharmaceutical corporation Umbrella, they had been conducting research on a mutagen which has leaked infecting the occupants turning them into the undead. An underground path is uncovered in the courtyard where the injured Bravo captain Enrico Marini warns them of a traitor within in S.T.A.R.S, but he is shot before he can name them.
An underground laboratory is unearthed where Umbrella develop their mutagen codenamed 'T-Virus' and most of the encountered monsters were attempts in bio-organic weapons (B.O.W) to be sold to militaries. Deep in a embryonic development lab is Wesker, an Umbrella scientist under orders to lead S.T.A.R.S to the mansion to collect combat data on the B.O.W's then activate self-destruct destroying the mansion and the evidence, but Wesker plans to betray Umbrella immediately afterwards.
He activates a cryogenic tank containing Umbrella's ultimate weapon, Tyrant, a super soldier human. He unleashes it on the S.T.A.R.S team but it impales him on its claw and turns its sights to the others, they defeat it. The self-destruct sequence is enabled and the S.T.A.R.S rush to the helipad where Brad Vickers is circling overhead, a signal rocket is launched. The still living Tyrant jumps through the roof for a final battle, Vickers throws a rocket launcher down which is used to destroy the monster.
S.T.A.R.S are evacuated as the mansion detonates behind them.
