Dead Love is new unorthodox love story from writer and director Chris Gallagher, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Friday 19th January. I got chance to ask Chris a few questions about making the film, working with Lloyd Kaufman and the seminal casting of Emily Booth whilst writing the script.

What can we expect from the film Dead Love?

Talking tables, cannibals, exploding hearts, an awesome soundtrack and many scenes of murder-sex (a term the actors coined on set). It’s essentially a love story concerning a man named Allan, a woman called Anne and a sentient piece of furniture! We’ve got all bases covered – if you want gore, we have scenes where some cast & crew had to watch through their hands. There’s a bit of comedy (hopefully) and underpinning that is the tale of two mismatched people finding love in an unlikely situation.

It’s fair to say I’m a sucker for scream queen “documentaries”. Be they the T&A filled features such as Scream Queen Hollywood Hot Tub Party, more amateur-hour productions such as Donald Farmer’s shot-on-video Invasion of the Scream Queens, or the awesome scream queen interviews that featured in Stephen King’s World of Horror – if it features an interview with a scream queen then I’m there. I’m also a fan of the documentaries and Blu-ray extras produced by High Rising Productions – including their previously released slasher movie documentary: Slice and Dice: The Slasher Movie Forever.

Put the two together and… I’m in filmic heaven!

Earlier this summer we reported that 88 Films will be releasing Graduation Day and Mother’s Day to Blu-ray in the UK, and now 1981′s Don’t Go in the Woods… Alone will also be given the UK high-definition treatment. Together, these three releases make up the first wave of 88 Films’ Slasher Classics Collection, and the documentary, Scream Queens: Horror Heroines Exposed!, has been included on Graduation Day‘s special features.

Graduation Day will hit Blu-ray in the UK on October 13th, while Mother’s Day will be available in the high-definition format sometime in early 2015. Every year, Rue Morgue Magazine teams up with the Toronto After Dark Film Festival crew to co-present one film during Tadff. This year, that film was Inbred, from UK Director Alex Chandon (Cradle of Fear). Unlike previous years’ Cinemacbre screenings during Tadff, this film wasn’t one that was squarely on my radar. Though I had heard a lot of buzz about it online – mostly relating to its violence and gore – I just never bothered to go digging for more info. Well, as it turns out, the violence and gore in the film is really the only reason to watch Inbred, and while it certainly delivers the juicy stuff by the bucketload, the rest of the film is an exercise in grueling mediocrity.

Inbred’s premise is simple: A group of troubled teens head to the rural countryside with their caretakers to try and fix up an old house, where they will be vacationing.

As the holiest range of dates in the British horror fanatic’s calendar now consigns itself to history, so too do the memories of this year’s Film4 FrightFest (Thursday 25 August to Monday 29 August). As usual, Dread Central was on the scene to bring you insight into the machinations of the UK’s biggest horror film festival. Now in its twelfth year of operation, the UK’s premier destination for lovers of all things scary and violent appears to have settled solidly into what will likely be its permanent home for the future – the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square. Did we mention last year that it’s also the largest cinema screen in the UK? We did, you say? Well, it is. And it’s a wonderful thing to behold every single time you enter the auditorium.

Inbred will have its World Premiere at London's 2011 Fright Fest August 29th at 6:30pm. This film, shot in the United Kingdom, gives a very English flavour to an often seen American theme of inbreeding and mutation. Just think of the Wrong Turn series of films and the many Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies. Both of these series involve a family shunning normal societal behaviour in favour of murder and bloodshed. This stereotype was developed in the American Appalachians, to generalize a group of hard-working, but misunderstood people who mostly stuck to a clan mentality. Now, the massacre moves to the hills of Yorkshire, where a group of community workers are in for the surprise of their lives.

As well, this film is a co-production between New Flesh Films and Split Second Films. This is the first feature to be produced by New Flesh Films, but the seventh for Split Second.

Okay, so here’s a quick question for you all … how many dog owners amongst you have suddenly experienced man’s best friend exhibit unusually disturbing behavioural tics after sitting them down in front of the television and watching a few horror movies together?

Anyone? No? No sudden canine savagery? No impulsive howling at the moon? No gratuitous tearing of flesh? No violent rending of bone? Not even any unwelcome soiling of carpets?

I only ask this question as, in regards to the Video Nasties furore of the mid-Eighties, Conservative MP Graham Bright once (in)famously appeared on television and categorically stated that “I believe there is research taking place and it will show that these films not only affect young people … but I believe they affect dogs as well.”

Some people, man! In what has to be the Wtf? story of the weekend, it turns out that there are some folks in the UK against having the horror film Inbred about (what else?) inbred locals made there for fear of viewers thinking it would be based on fact. How we wish we're making this shit up! It's good to know that our friends across the pond can be just as silly as we are here at times!
