Every great screen performance expands the medium in its own way, giving audiences something to respond to, while offering fresh ideas to future actors. A select few can be said to have redefined the craft entirely: Orson Welles in “Citizen Kane,” Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront,” Toshiro Mifune in “Rashomon” and Gena Rowlands in “A Woman Under the Influence.”
Rowlands died Wednesday at age 94, half a century after “A Woman Under the Influence” premiered at the New York Film Festival in 1974. Rowlands was the last to go from among a tight clique of titans — actors who transformed modern cinema: Peter Falk, Seymour Cassel, Ben Gazzara and, of course, Rowlands’ late husband, actor-director John Cassavetes.
Younger audiences who know Rowlands only as the memory-challenged older woman in “The Notebook” (directed by her son Nick Cassavetes) or for her Emmy-winning turn in “Hysterical Blindness” owe it to themselves to investigate her most important work,...

Whenever an actor passes away, the expression "greatest to ever do it" is often tossed around. In the case of four-time Emmy and two-time Golden Globe winner Gena Rowlands, the legendary star of the stage, television, and film with a career spanning nearly seven decades, the expression feels somewhat inadequate. Her presence on screen was unwavering and incomparable, a captivating presence who could express a character's entire life story with the lift of an eyebrow or the lighting of a cigarette. She was the type of performer that actors aspired to be more like, and displayed an authentic sense of vulnerability that few have come close to matching. Her passing was first reported by TMZ. She was 94.
Rowlands was graced with an honorary Oscar in 2015, a year after her final on-screen performance. She had been nominated twice before, and one could easily argue that she should have taken home the statue both times.

June 4, 2024 – Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley, beloved James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan and Star Wars universe luminary Mark Hamill form the ultimate vocal rogues’ gallery in Mofac Animation’s upcoming The King of Kings, an animated family film inspired by a little-known short story by Charles Dickens depicting the life and times of Jesus Christ.
Kingsley voices High Priest Caiaphas, who presided over the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus. Hamill takes on the role of King Herod, who, according to the Gospel of Matthew, ordered the Massacre of the Innocents in an attempt to kill Jesus as an infant. And Brosnan gives animated life to Pontius Pilate, who ultimately ordered the crucifixion of Jesus. The triumvirate of villainous voices further enhances the A-list cast behind the faith-based animated film, which also includes Academy Award & Emmy Award winners Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Golden Globe...

Gena Rowlands is the Ocar-nominated thespian who made a name for herself thanks to a series of manic, high-wire performances in several films, many of them directed by her late husband, indie maverick John Cassavetes. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of Rowlands’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
After making a name for herself with bit parts onstage and onscreen, Rowlands flourished when she became the muse of Cassavetes, who she married in 1954. A fellow performer, Cassavetes would raise money from appearing in movies like “The Dirty Dozen” (1967) and “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), immediately funneling the funds into his own projects. His wife was usually front and center, as were their family members and friends.
Rowlands’s operatic performances were a perfect match for her husband’s improvisational, energetic films, including “Faces” (1968), “Minnie and Moskowitz” (1971), “Opening Night” (1977) and “Love Streams” (1984). Her...

The NBC comedy Frasier had plenty of A-list guest stars. Many Cheers cast members visited Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) in Seattle. Patrick Stewart, Bill Gates and Laura Linney were among other Frasier guest stars. One guest star, however, ruled himself out of a Frasier episode with his weird request.

Frasier writer Ken Levine discussed the episode and guest star in question on an episode of his Hollywood & Levine podcast. Here’s why you never saw Ben Gazzara on an episode of Frasier.
The ‘Frasier’ episode they wanted to cast Ben Gazzara for
Gazzara was a film and television actor from the ‘60s through his death in 2012. Though he starred on three seasons of Run For Your Life, it was 2003’s Hysterical Blindness that finally landed him an Emmy. Gazzara also appeared in legendary movies from Anatomy of a Murder to Road House and The Big Lebowski.

Showtime has finalized its plans on how to submit the cast of breakout hit “Yellowjackets” for Emmy consideration — and it comes down to which generation the star is in. Variety has learned exclusively that Showtime plans to submit Tawny Cypress, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis and Melanie Lynskey in the lead drama actress field. Cypress, Ricci, Lewis and Lynskey portray the adult versions of the girls in the show.
Meanwhile, the actresses that play the teenage versions of their characters — Ella Purnell, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher and Samantha Hanratty — will be submitted for supporting actress drama.
The horror drama flashes back and forth between two periods: One, the aftermath of a plane crash, as the members of a high school girls’ soccer team have to fend for themselves; the other, in their adult lives, as they deal with the trauma of that experience.
One of the daunting questions...

After many votes have been tabulated, Barbra Streisand and Meryl Streep are your top two choices to receive the 2022 Screen Actors Guild life achievement award. In our recent poll featuring 10 actress possibilities, these two Oscar winners were far and above the top vote-getters and finished in a very tight race. See full vote percentages below.
The SAG-AFTRA committee will most likely be announcing their life achievement award recipient in the near future for the ceremony next February. This event skipped the annual tradition in 2021 for a pre-taped, shortened ceremony. It was three men in a row for the most recent ceremonies, so our guess is that it will be a woman this time. All 10 of these actresses in the poll had two things in common with typical decisions by this committee: at least 65 years old with a history of charitable and/or humanitarian works.

Regina King now has double Emmy bookends. As expected, the “Watchmen” star won Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress at Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, making her the first actress to have multiple wins in the lead and supporting limited categories.
The Oscar winner took home her first two Emmys in supporting for “American Crime” in 2015 and ’16, and triumphed in lead for “Seven Seconds” in 2018. This is her fourth Emmy in six years.
With her second victory for “American Crime,” King became one of five women to have won the supporting category a record two times, alongside Jane Alexander, Judy Davis, Colleen Dewhurst and Mare Winningham. She is the only one to do so consecutively. The other four have been shortlisted in lead, but only Davis has ever won there, in 2001 for “Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows” on her fifth of seven bids in the category.

The trailers for upcoming HBO miniseries “I Know This Much is True” advertise, “Academy Award nominee Mark Ruffalo, Academy Award winner Melissa Leo, Emmy winner Rosie O’Donnell, Emmy winner Archie Panjabi, with Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis and Emmy winner Kathryn Hahn.” With such a deep bench and Ruffalo the Best Movie/Limited Actor front-runner for his dual role as twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, “I Know This Much is True” is a formidable contender for a Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress nomination, but for which star?
SEEour rundown on the “Mrs. America” supporting actresses.
Honorable mention: Juliette Lewis as Nedra Frank
Nedra is a scholar whom Dominic hires to translate an Italian manuscript for an autobiography by his late grandfather. Anyone who tunes into the premiere might want to nominate Lewis, who is unhinged and unpredictable in an uncomfortable nine-minute scene when she shows up unexpectedly at Dominic’s door one night.

Before Regina King won her Oscar for “If Beale Street Could Talk” (2018), she took home three Emmys in four years. She could make it four in six years in September if she nabs Best Limited/TV Movie Actress for “Watchmen,” and if she does, she’d also carve out her own slice of Emmy history as the first actress have two wins each in the lead and supporting limited categories.

Gena Rowlands celebrates her 89th birthday on June 19, 2019. The Oscar-nominated thespian made a name for herself thanks to a series of manic, high-wire performances in several films, many of them directed by her late husband, indie maverick John Cassavetes. But how many of her titles remain classics? In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 12 of Rowlands’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.

In an age where special effects reign supreme, there’s one aspect of the filmmaking process that hasn’t gone through a radical transformation — music. Some of the best movies in any given year would be sorely lacking without their memorable scores, and this has remained true well into the first two decades of the 21st century.

Film composers play an integral part in the filmmaking process, and there are a handful whose bodies of work stand out in recent years. Of course, this list of 12 major composers only begins to scratch the surface of the talent out there. There are plenty of other worthy contributors to the medium who didn’t make the cut — Danny Elfman and John Williams, we’re looking at you — but rest assured that this top dozen represent the cream of the crop.

Reuniting with Kenneth Lonergan after 2000’s You Can Count on Me, composer Lesley Barber‘s score for Manchester by the Sea is one of the year’s most beautiful. When we recently spoke with her, we said the soundtrack is, “like the surrounding film, something of a contradiction: unmissable yet unintrusive, and enveloping as it disappears into the dramatic action.” We’ve now teamed with Milan Records to give away four CDs to our readers. All entries must be received by 11:59 Pm Est on Sunday, November 27th.

I know that M. Night Shyamalan has become a bit of a joke in the film world, and I think that’s a little sad. I count The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable among my favourite movies of all time, but even I can admit that it’s only been a downward slide since then. I’ve been hoping for a return to form for a while but could that hope have finally been realized with a TV series?
A new trailer for his (he’s a producer and directed the pilot) new series Wayward Pines looks extremely promising. Many wrote this off as a wannabe Twin Peaks, and while there definitely is a major Twin Peaks vibe happening here, but I think it could surprise us and turn into something unique.
Come May 14th, I’ll be on board to check this out. This trailer definitely has me more intrigued...
