The Most Obviously Reused Movie Props
Image
Making a movie is hard — not just the metaphorical work of writing a script and performing a character, but literally building the world of the film. And what with the rising costs of CGI, big name movie stars and blackmailers these days, studios trim the budget wherever they can. That often means reusing chunks of other movies, even if they’re instantly recognizable. Like…

5 The Golden Idol From ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’

The “Chachapoyan Fertility Idol” is at the center of one of the most iconic action sequences of all time, so you’d think filmmakers would know it’s a little distracting to see it pop up somewhere Indy could never reach. It’s a fun allusion to Harrison Ford in Solo: A Star Wars Story and Andor, but it’s shown up everywhere from The Majestic to Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams. It’s...

Why The Grinch's Cindy Lou Who Actress Taylor Momsen Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
Actress and rock 'n' roller Taylor Momsen made her screen debut at the age of three, appearing in a 1997 Shake 'n Bake commercial. In the ad, she noted that Shake 'n Bake dinners were an excellent sign of her mother's love, and she demonstrated the product with aplomb. It's Shake 'n Bake, and she helped. Momsen was also, at the time, working as a child model, something she recalls hating. In a 2011 interview with Bethesda, Momsen said that she recalls being busy a lot as a toddler and that she wasn't given a lot of time to spend with friends. Her whole life, she said, she was in and out of school.

That same year, while she was still in preschool, Momsen started appearing on a few TV shows, notably the 1997 "The Cosby Show" spinoff "Cosby," and in a 1998 episode of "Early Edition." Momsen's first feature film was director David Worth...

Robert Rodriguez, who directed the original horror film written by Kevin Williamson (Scream) that starred Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood and Shawn Hatosy, will produce the remake. Drew Hancock is on board to pen the screenplay for the updated version.

Hancock also wrote and directed Companion, a sci-fi thriller set for a release this weekend by Warner Bros. Pictures. The suspense pic stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid and portrays a weekend getaway that goes violently wrong.

The original The Faculty featured a news editor and film critic played by Wood seeing the murder of a nurse. After she seemingly lives again, he decides to investigate the bizarre happenings.

Rodriguez, a veteran director and showrunner, also produced the original film alongside Elizabeth Avellan. The Alita, Sin City and Desperado filmmaker produced Disney+...

10 Great Quotes From Bad Movies
Image
When a movie quote is memorable and connects with audiences, it can change the entire course of the plot and leave an impression on viewers. There are plenty of movies with bad reputations that are actually good. However, while the quality of a film relies on many different moving parts, it's easy to immediately identify a good quote. When a quote makes the maximum impact, it's moving, philosophical, and well-crafted. These lines are elevated even more by their delivery, as plenty of great actors grace the screen of films that are received well by critics and audiences.

Qualifying a movie as "bad" is subjective, as just because a movie isn't of the highest quality or critically acclaimed doesn't mean it can't be fun to watch or enjoyable in a campy sense. Finding hidden gems within the dialogue of poorly reviewed films is like watching a project that wastes a great...

Why Jenny Humphrey's Taylor Momsen Left Gossip Girl After Season 4
Image
While Jenny Humphrey was a major character throughout the majority of Gossip Girl, actress Taylor Momsen made an abrupt exit halfway through season 4. Before landing the role in Gossip Girls cast as Dan Humphreys younger sister, Jenny, Momsen was best known for her childhood acting roles in projects such as How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) and Spy Kids 2 (2002). The success of Gossip Girl launched Momsen into a more mature teen role that departed from her past projects, but she would only remain in the main cast for the shows first four seasons.

At the very end of Gossip Girl season 3, Jenny was sent to live in Hudson with her mother, which led to Momsen only having a few appearances back in the city upon her return in season 4. Momsens final episode as a member of Gossip Girls main cast was in season 4, episode 10, Gaslit, which concluded with Jenny returning...

10 Most Hardcore Quotes From Kid's Movies (That Feel Really Out Of Place)
Image
Movies aimed at children are typically more lighthearted affairs, but that doesn't stop the occasional screenwriter from injecting some surprisingly chilling dialogue into an otherwise family-friendly story. Even the best movies made for kids are less intense by their very nature, with rating guidelines and cultural sensibilities usually demanding a more relaxed tone. While children's films can delve into more serious topics like heartbreak and death, it's certainly rare for their dialogue to be exactly hardcore.

It's a rare few kid's movies that break this trend, doling out some hard-hitting quotes that stand with the best movie lines in history. Sometimes, these witticisms make sense in an overall more mature family picture skating by on a PG or PG-13 rating, but in other instances, they feel jarringly out-of-place in an otherwise fun or downright vapid piece of children's entertainment. Sounding even more hardcore when taken out of context, it's hard...

10 Best Robert Rodriguez Movies, Ranked
Image
Director Robert Rodriguez emerged from the indie movie renaissance in the early 1990s with a vibrant and inventive canon of motion pictures. Along with his friend Quentin Tarantino, he found inspiration in pulp genres and B-movies, which he elevated thanks to a sly sense of humor and impressive narrative inventiveness. That resulted in many of his signature films, particularly the mariachi trilogy of actioners, and his wild vampire movie From Dusk Till Dawn.

These days, he's probably most associated with the groundbreaking Mandalorian series for the Star Wars saga, and its follow-up, The Book of Boba Fett. He remains firmly committed to theatrical films, however, which encompass his best-known and most critically acclaimed works. A list of his 10 best films follows, encompassing three decades of signature movie making.

Carla Gugino Filmed ‘Spy Kids’ at 27 Years Old and Says Her Casting as a Mom Was ‘Physically Totally Impossible’: ‘I Was 10 Years Too Young for the Role’
Image
Carla Gugino recently told BuzzFeed that her beloved role in Robert Rodriguez’s 2001 family action film “Spy Kids” was “physically totally impossible.” The actor was 27 years old when she filmed the movie and played Ingrid Cortes, the mother of two spies. By Gugino’s math, the character didn’t add up.

“It is so funny because I was 27,” Gugino recounted. “It was a really beautiful kind of double-edged sword because I love that movie so much. And the whole experience was incredible, and the movies continue.”

“I love Ingrid Cortes. But it was funny because I was 10 years, at least, too young for the role because I was a spy for 10 years and then somehow had children who were like 9 and 11,” she continued with a laugh. “So it was physically totally impossible.”

Gugino starred in “Spy Kids” opposite Antonio Banderas, Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara. She said the movie had...

What Happened To Carmen & Juni In Spy Kids
Image
Carmen and Juni Cortez, the original Spy Kids, have grown up and are no longer the central duo of the franchise. In Spy Kids 4, Carmen and Juni become estranged but ultimately reconcile and announce their plan to revive the Spy Kids program together. Carmen and Juni do not appear in Spy Kids: Armageddon, as the creator wanted to start fresh with a new generation of remarkable kids, but future installments could include members of the legacy cast.

Netflix New Releases: October 2023
Image
There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!

Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).

Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

The movie gave birth to a franchise, spanning multiple sequels, an animated series and even a new reboot, Spy Kids: Armageddon. Viewers likely remember Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez, parents of main characters Juni and Carmen, or Danny Trejo as Uncle Machete. But some actors slipped under the radar at the time, like Selena Gomez and Glen Powell. Others may not have been as familiar to young viewers yet, such as Tony Shalhoub and George Clooney. Skydance Media optioned the film rights to Netflix with the intention of reimagining the spy thriller for a modern audience, according to Variety.

Officially titled "Spy Kids: Armageddon," the new project will be the fifth installment in the "Spy Kids" franchise, following the original 2001 "Spy Kids" and it's three sequels: "Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams," "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over," and "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World." If you've ever stared off into the distance pondering the complexities of Steve Buscemi's deeply existential quote in "Spy Kids 2," or if you're still waiting on that instant Happy Meal microwave to hit the market,...

Few Directors Followed In Sin City's Footsteps, And Cinema Is Poorer For It

Comic book movies are everywhere. At the beginning of the millennium, comic and graphic novel adaptations were uncommon, with the critical failure of "Batman and Robin" putting the breaks on many studios' plans for future superhero fare. Nowadays, we are spoiled by the veritable bounty of comic book re-imaginings, from the indomitable machine of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the many spin-offs of "The Walking Dead" to the Oscar-winning success of "Joker." We live in a time where even "Madame Web" is getting a big-budget film. Truly, our cup runneth over.

Of course, the trend is currently for superheroes and hasn't expanded much beyond that limited subgenre. Comic books are like any other artistic medium: they encompass seemingly limitless potential across styles, themes, genres, and intents. There are exceptions, from the mundane realism of "Ghost World" and "American Splendor" to the rip-roaring golden age adventuring of "The Adventures of Tintin.

Hypnotic Cast & Character Guide
Image
Along with well-timed twists and gripping mysteries, Robert Rodriguez's Hypnotic features a roster of intriguing characters, played by talented cast members. Conceptualized around the same time Rodriguez was filming Spy Kids 2, Hypnotic has reportedly been in development for nearly two decades. Its lengthy development period and the director's steadfast passion for the project are not surprising, given how its early reviews are lauding it for its meticulously crafted blend of espionage and science fiction.

Hypnotic's espionage-centric narrative revolves around detective Danny Rourke's hunt for a bank robber. Meanwhile, its science fiction kicks when it turns out that the bank robber has the ability to hypnotize people and bend their realities at his will. As Rourke races against time to catch the robber, mysteries of his past begin surfacing, raising the stakes of his mission even higher than he had initially anticipated. Driven by Robert Rodriguez's eye for detail and gripping character beats,...

Where Was After Earth Filmed? All Filming Locations Explained
Image
After Earth, despite being a futuristic movie, was filmed mostly on location in the United States and parts of Central America. The 2013 Hollywood blockbuster was directed by M. Night Shyamalan and co-written by him and Gary Whitta. After Earth was the first film to star Will Smith and his son, a young Jaden Smith, since 2007's The Pursuit of Happyness. Will Smith had planned sequels for After Earth, which did not come to fruition for many reasons, including the original movie's unfavorable reviews.

The story was partly developed by Will Smith and follows his character Cypher Raige and his son Kitai (Jaden Smith) stranded on a futuristic Earth following a crash landing. After Earth takes place 1000 years in the future where Earth has become inhabitable and humanity has moved to another planet called Nova Prime. The sci-fi film features several expansive landscapes of an abandoned Earth as Kitai traverses dangerous...

‘Hypnotic’ Review: Robert Rodriguez’s Work-In-Progress Film Needs More Work To Progress Into Something Less Convoluted – SXSW
Image
The idea for Hypnotic conceptualized around the time director Robert Rodriguez was filming Spy Kids 2, which is what he told the audience at Sunday night’s premiere screening. His love of Austin and SXSW is what brought him back 30 years after El Mariachi. This was a full-circle moment for him, and he revealed that this film is a work in progress. After watching it, Hypnotic still needs work in order to progress because this is all over the place. Written by Rodriguez (who also provided the score) and Matt Borenstein, the pic stars Ben Affleck, Alice Braga, William Fichtner, Jeff Fahey and Dayo Okeniyi.

Robert Rodriguez Goes Indie with ‘Hypnotic’ and Gives Back to Austin in a Big Way
Image
As a fan greeted Robert Rodriguez during the Q&a of his latest film “Hypnotic” at the SXSW Film & TV festival, the fan recalled a story that after seeing Rodriguez’s breakthrough “El Mariachi” in 1992, he then immigrated to America and watched the TV movie “Roadracers” from 1994. And seeing Rodriguez’s name in the credits again made him perk up.

“I’m glad that guy got to make another movie,” the fan recalled thinking.

“I say that to myself too,” Rodriguez responded.

Because, though he’s directed three “Spy Kids” movies and most recently an expensive cult sci-fi like “Alita: Battle Angel,” there was a time when Rodriguez was a scrappy indie filmmaker unsure if he would get a second chance. And while his latest film “Hypnotic” may star Ben Affleck and other major stars, he told the crowd of largely fans at the Paramount Theater that the experience of...

Oscars Don’t Distract SXSW: Attendees Transfixed By Robert Rodriguez’s Work-In-Progress ‘Hypnotic’; Crowds Turned Away
Image
The Oscars in Hollywood didn’t rain on Robert Rodriguez’s parade Sunday as the filmmaker debuted his long-in-the-works Hypnotic at SXSW’s Paramount Theatre, with crowds having to be turned away.

Much to Rodriguez’s relief, the $70 million Ben Affleck movie — which was delayed by Covid, shut down three times, slapped with an insurance lawsuit and saw its U.S. distributor Solstice Studios implode — received a rapturous response at the jam-packed Austin theatre. Throngs are definitely back here at SXSW.

Spy Kids Franchise: 10 Memorable High-Tech Gadgets, Ranked Least To Most Useful
Image
Ever since rumors about a Spy Kids reboot from Netflix began swirling in September 2022, the internet has been atwitter over the prospect of which direction Robert Rodriguez will take the franchise. Tentatively titled Spy Kids: Armageddon (via Collider), one thing everyone can count on is the return and introduction of several fantastic and futuristic tech gadgets that the lovable kids use to track their enemies, evade danger, and have an absolute blast doing it.

Yet, for as entertaining as the escapist family film franchise is, some of the elaborate spy gadgets the kids use are far more practical for everyday use than others, while others are far too ludicrous to realistically assist secret agents in the field.

Electroshock Bubbles & Gumballs In Spy Kids Are Effective But Don't Last Long Enough

HBO Max New Releases: July 2022
Nathan Fielder
With its list of new releases for July 2022, HBO Max is stepping up its TV game. Not that any entity associated with “It’s Not TV, It’s HBO” would ever not bring the televised goods, but the small screen is of particular consequence this month.

The middle of July is jam-packed with TV goodies like docuseries The Anarchists (July 10), rescued animated project Tuca & Bertie season 3 (July 11), and the latest Nathan Fielder creation The Rehearsal (July 15). The real heavy hitter arrives later on though. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premieres on July 28 and will introduce the next generation of the Pll franchise. It doesn’t have a release date yet but July will also host season 3 of the delightful Harley Quinn at some point.

HBO Max’s movie offerings aren’t as deep this month. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 12) and We Met In Virtual Reality (July 27) are really the only originals of note.

Zack Snyder Adds to Batman Oral Sex Discourse
Steve Buscemi
This post contains spoilers of an existential nature.

“Do you think God stays in heaven because he too lives in fear of what he’s created?” Steve Buscemi’s Dr. Romero asks in the 2002 modern cinematic masterpiece, Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams.

It’s a valid question. One that I’ve been asking myself a lot this week as the “does Batman eat pussy” discourse continues across various social media platforms. It just got another shot in the arm from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League director Zack Snyder as it happens, because we live in a society. A society that refuses to let DC besmirch the good name of Batman when it comes to orally pleasuring someone, apparently. That’s where we draw a line in the sand and say “not today.”

Your response to seeing the words ‘Zack Snyder Adds to Batman Oral...

Netflix’s latest family movie has proven to be a huge hit with subscribers. Trainor, 26, staged the virtual get-together during an Instagram Live on her account. She and her husband had just rewatched the original movie — one of four Spy Kids films Sabara and PenaVega starred in together — and were answering questions for about 40 minutes before PenaVega appeared as a surprise special guest.
