The VeggieTales Musical!
andy_at_the_movies29 July 2003
My family and I found this Big Idea production to be one of the most entertaining VeggieTales shows. As usual, the characters are very funny, but I especially enjoy the songs and music.

The Silly Song, `Larry's High Silk Hat', spoofs Forest Gump to the tune of `Funniculi, Funnicula'. My 19 month old enjoys dancing to it.

Note the references to other VeggieTale shows: the chocolate bunny (from Rack, Shack and Benny) in the silly song and Lyle's Stuff Mart bag (from Madame Blueberry)

A sharp production with a meaningful message that all kids (and adults) should see.

Many viewers agree: The is the best Veggietales!

Just as a contrast to the first comment left about this video, most fans think this is the best of the Veggietales lot. It has outsold all previous episodes (though the recent "Ballad of Little Joe" is closing in on its sales records) and received Best Direct to Video Release of 2000 from the World Animation Celebration -- beating out "Lady and the Tramp II". If you want more positive reviews, check out Amazon.com. I, for one, think you'll like it, too.

Fantabulous

This is a great veggietale. The viking wife song is just the tip of the iceberg. The utter silliness, yet classiness(what other show can incorporate gilbert and sullivan and Shakespeare with out dumbing it down or seeming stupid)Omlet is hysterically funny AND accurate. My mother teaches English in high school so she knows lol.The silly song, while different,is addicting and very very cute,I never knew it was parodying Forrest gump. Now while I'm sentimental for qwerty and the bible verse, this was still good.It had good Christian values, but was not stuffy or boring, much like all the veggietales(Sat morning fun)like every veggietales. The one moment that keeps popping into my mind is Archie sitting in his armchair with a faux fire and his leather robe.

This is one of the best veggietales, musical, veggietales,a fun loving, classic or just plain kid at heart movie anyone can and should watch

Don't Take to Kindly
NoDakTatum21 October 2023
I have been a fan for a few years of the VeggieTales series, but this installment is the weakest yet. Normally this cute series will reenact a Biblical story, but dress it up with running jokes, goofy songs, and computer animated physical slapstick. Usually introduced by a talking tomato and Larry the Cucumber, my kids always enjoyed them. Archibald the Asparagus runs this episode, and everything is kind of fun until his very slow take on "Hamlet," entitled "Omelette." How many children are going to get that? There is a silly song from Larry in the middle, but it sounds amazingly like all the other songs from Larry. My then three year old was asleep by the time the story of Lyle the Kindly Viking came on, aping yet another child-obscure reference- Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. This section is not as annoying as a real Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, but there is not anything new offered this time around, either. Both stories involve sharing, and that point is made abundantly clear, but this video was not the laugh riot that earlier entries have been. I look forward more to the video release of the theatrical film than sitting down to watch this again. My TV and VCR worked fine, but the picture on the video had a washed out quality to it. I was spoiled by other VeggieTales' crystal clear animation, and funny takes on Bible stories. "VeggieTales: Lyle the Kindly Viking" is a real letdown.

Tongue in cheek look at the importance of Sharing

Hey they are VIKINGS ! as their wives sing - "that's the lot we got when married we...the terrors of the sea !" When Lyle , the smallest viking of the crew begins to be mysteriously missing from the crew's various raids, 2 of his crew mates smell something fishy. They decide to follow him one night and discover that not only is he not participating in the raids, he's actually going to the same places and giving stuff back ! Archebald Asparagus tries to host the show this time. After Jimmy and Jerry Gourds awful attempt, Archebald argues that he deserves a shot at it and has the french peas try and locate a Lost Gilbert and Sullivan musical. Along with "OMLET" ( a spoof of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" ) his wish to bring a touch of class to the show comes true. Well, sort of...

A definite VeggieTales classic !

Worst Veggie Tale...
MovieAddict201622 November 2002
Lyle the Friendly Viking is the worst Veggie Tales video yet. The jokes fall flat, the characters seem different, and the "Silly Song With Larry" (which was supposed to mock Forrest Gump partially) fell REALLY short. I'm not saying this film was bad, just the worst Veggie Tales film yet. Big difference.
