Kevin Smith originally intended to make a sequel titled "Son of Fletch" with Jason Lee as Fletch's son and Chevy Chase reprising his role. He met with Chase but the two clashed during their meeting. Chase wanted to improvise throughout the film as he had done in the original film but Smith disagreed. Smith eventually dropped out of the film to work on Dogma (1999).
On April 15th, 2015 it was announced the movie moved from Warner Bros. to Relativity Media. Jason Sudeikis still too lead and Relativity is aquiring rights to all 11 "Fletch" novels. The movies will be filmed in chronological order.
March of 2014 it was announced Jason Sudeikis is to star. There had been no more new news on the project until January 2015 when at Sundance MTV News interviewed Mr. Sudeikis and he said a script is being written and he expressed his excitement over getting to play IM. Fletcher, who he described as a "smart ass Jason Bourne."
April 15, 2015 it was announced "Fletch Won" was dropped from Warner Bros. and Relativity Media picked it up and is moving forward with movie.
Kevin Smith says that he received phone calls from John Cusack and Matthew Perry, who were both interested in playing Fletch.
