Prostitution, Homosexuality and Narcissism, in a Horrible Phase of the Brazilian Cinema
claudio_carvalho5 August 2004
Beto (David Cardoso) is expelled from the lands where he works, when the landlord finds him in bed with his daughter. He moves to the great city of São Paulo and, without having a former profession and not able to find a job, he becomes a prostitute, having sex with gays. After meeting and falling in love for a journalist, he tries to have a regular life, but his past haunts him. This shallow and ridiculous movie, having prostitution, homosexuality and explicit narcissism of David Cardoso, shows a horrible phase of the Brazilian cinema. In the 70's and 80's, with the dictatorship oppressing our society, one relief valve for a segment of our society was the 'pornochanchada', a genre with lots of naked women and simulation of sexual situations. In general, this type of movie was funny and used to show beautiful naked Brazilian models. 'Corpo Devasso' is pretentious: instead of a comedy, is a superficial and unbelievable drama, with the ham actor David Cardoso leading the awful cast and being one of the producers. My vote is two.
