True to tradition, the Directors Guild documentary nominees do not match up completely with the Oscar documentary nominations. All five are first-time DGA nominees. In fact, two documentaries directed by women that did not make the Oscar final five are Lauren Greenfield's well-reviewed "Queen of Versailles," which Magnolia picked up out of Sundance, and Alison Kayman's "Ai WeiWei: Never Sorry," which made the Oscar shortlist of fifteen but not the final selection. The other three nominees, "The Invisible War," "How to Survive a Plague" and "Searching for Sugar Man" made the final Oscar cut. The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has made a little bit more progress in it’s ever so exhausting task of narrowing down the top contenders for the Documentary Feature Award.
The list, which used to include just over 120 films, has finally been narrowed to a more manageable 15. Many of the films such as Bart Layton’s docu-thriller The Imposter and Jeff Orlowski’s beautiful climate change doc Chasing Ice were heavily acclaimed by both critics and cinephiles at this past Sundance Film Festival, and their appearance on the Academy’s Shortlist come as no surprise.
Personally I am pulling for my own Sundance favorite “Searching For Sugar Man”, but in order for the film to win it will have to beat out some seriously tough competition. Check out the full list of films below:
Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, Never Sorry LLCBully, The Bully Project LLCChasing Ice, ExposureDetropia,...
