This 25-Year-Old Julia Roberts Movie Led to 1 of the Greatest Oscar Wins of All Time
Image
The Academy Awards over the years have garnered a strange reputation. Every year, without hesitation, fans will turn on their televisions to watch the pompous program, and celebrities will flock to the Dolby Theater to take part in it. Despite the awards banquet remaining a huge deal to virtually everyone, it truly seems like no one is happy with the state of the program. A mountain of complaints have been leveled against the Academy over the years, from "#OscarsSoWhite" to complaints of sexism, to allegations of xenophobia. The most common complaint, however, is far less serious and far more avoidable, and it concerns the "Consolation Oscar."

A consolation Oscar is a term for when an award is given to a legendary actor who is deserving of an Academy Award for their body of work, but isn't quite deserving of the one they received the award for. It is a collective...

The Farrelly Brothers Think ‘Shallow Hal’ Totally Holds Up
Image
The Farrelly Brothers are known for making iconic comedies like Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin and There’s Something About Mary — as well as less-than-iconic comedies like Hall Pass and the remake of The Heartbreak Kid that somehow missed the entire point of the original. After working on separate projects for the past decade (including one of the worst Oscar Best Picture winners of all time), the Farrelly Brothers are back together. Sort of.

The new comedy Dear Santa was directed by Bobby Farrelly, from a script co-written by Peter Farrelly. It stars Jack Black as the literal Devil, who is accidentally conjured by a small child after they write a letter to “Satan” instead of “Santa.”

Is it any good? Well, the fact that it dropped on Paramount+ on a Monday doesn’t exactly seem like a great sign.

But could Dear Santa possibly be worse than the Farrelly Brothers’ previous collaboration with Jack Black?...

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson peaked at 65 million concurrent viewers for Netflix. Was it a success?
Image
After months of hype, Jake Paul‘s big night has come and gone. On November 15, the rambunctious creator defeated boxing legend Mike Tyson in an eight-round tilt that ended in a unanimous decision.

Paul’s victory improved his professional record to 12-1 and cemented influencer boxing as a mainstream phenomenon. At the same time, the broadcast was plagued by technical difficulties, and the quality of the combat varied widely from fight to fight. Despite Paul vs. Tyson’s massive viewership, many observers will remember it as a failure, and broadcaster Netflix can learn a lot from the event’s mixed reception.

Let’s start with Netflix’s biggest positive: The fight peaked at 65 million concurrent viewers.

That number comes from official data released by Netflix. It’s the most viewership the streamer has ever received from one of its live events, and that wasn’t the only record Paul vs.

Jake Paul and Mike Tyson Fight Filled With Nonstop Netflix Promotion, From ‘Squid Game’ Guards to ‘America’s Sweethearts’ Cheerleaders
Image
Who needs upfronts anyway? Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson, Netflix’s first live sporting event, has been stuffed with Netflix promotion during its first broadcast hour.

The main event began at 8 p.m. Est on Friday, and almost immediately there was plenty of Netflix self-promotion. The initial bit of entertainment before the first fight was a performance from “America’s Sweethearts” subjects, the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Given that the fight is taking place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas — the home of the Cowboys — the synergy proved irresistible.

The first match on the main card was a super middleweight fight between India’s Neeraj Goyat and Brazil’s Whindersson Nunes. During the course of the fight, it was revealed that Nunes has three comedy specials on Netflix, and Goyat made an appearance on the streamer’s “Ultimate Beastmaster: India.”

In between rounds during the Goyat and Nunes fight, a...

‘Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix
Image
The hit docuseries “America’s Sweethearts: The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” has been renewed for a second season at Netflix.

The first season of the docuseries, which captured the unfiltered lives of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders on and off the field, left audiences thunderstruck — or at least trying to learn the choreography to Dcc’s signature pregame routine.

Directed by Emmy winner Greg Whitley, “America’s Sweethearts” debuted June 20 and launched onto Netflix’s top 10 worldwide chart with 2.3 million views in its first four days on the platform. The series remained on the list of top 10 U.S. TV shows for five weeks straight and reached the top 10 in 27 countries. The “Thunderstruck” number became a viral TikTok dance trend (10K videos have used the sound) with thousands of people shaking their poms — though fewer attempted the high-flying jump split, further proving the squad’s “often imitated, never equaled” status.

Season 1 followed the 2023-24 Dcc squad,...

The Dallas Cowboys Season May Be Dead, but Netflix Just Ordered Another Season of Its Cheerleader Docuseries
Image
Dallas Cowboys fans are not a happy group right now. On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles dismantled their NFC rival 34-6, dropping the Cowboys to a lowly 3-6 (and now 0-4 at home!) record. There is one bright spot this morning, however: Netflix has renewed docuseries “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” for a second season.

At least something from the Cowboys sideline is working.

Season 2 of “America’s Sweethearts” will follow the 2024-25 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders squad from start to finish — kicking off at auditions and training camp, and continuing all the way through the NFL season. Yes, Cowboys fans (and haters) will be able to relive this dumpster fire of a football season all over again, just from a different Pov.

We do not yet have a premiere date for the second season, but let the timing from the first one be your guide. “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” premiered...

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Doc Series Renewed at Netflix
Image
Netflix is heading back to the Dallas Cowboys’ sideline.

The streamer had ordered a second season of its unscripted series America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. Season one, which premiered in June, spent four weeks in Netflix’s worldwide top 10 English-language series (and one additional week in the United States).

The second season of the show will follow the squad through its 2024-25 campaign, starting with auditions and continuing through the NFL season. (The Cowboys are currently struggling on the field, with a record of 3-6 through Nov. 10.)

America’s Sweethearts is part of an ongoing relationship Netflix has with the Cowboys. The streamer is also working on a docuseries about the team and its owner, Jerry Jones, with a focus on the Cowboys’ dominance of the early and mid-1990s, when they won three Super Bowls in four years. (Netflix’s upcoming Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match will also...

What Went Wrong with Billy Crystal’s Bizarrely Bad Apple Drama ‘Before’?
Image
One of the famous scenes in “When Harry Met Sally…,” Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner’s autumnal rom-com classic, sees Harry (Billy Crystal) explaining why he always starts a new book by reading the last few pages: “That way, in case I die before I finish, I know how it ends.” Along with much of Harry’s advice, I don’t typically put this one into practice. Men and women can be friends, taking a buddy to the airport is no big deal, and impatient people reading stories out of order is probably how we ended up with all these in media res TV intros.

But boy, do I wish I had skipped to the end of “Before,” just to save myself some time. At least having seen all 10 episodes, I can confidently advise those few unfortunate souls curious enough to consider watching that they’re better off revisiting any other Crystal project instead.

Billy Crystal's New Apple TV+ Thriller Show Debuts On Rt With His Worst Score In 12 Years
Image
Before has earned a career-low Rotten Tomatoes score for star Billy Crystal. The actor, who is best known for his roles in comedies including When Harry Met Sally, Monsters, Inc., and City Slickers, stars in the Apple TV+ series as widower psychologist Eli, who discovers that he has a mysterious connection to his newest patient. The Before cast also includes Jacobi Jupe, Maria Dizzia, Ava Lalezarzadeh, Rosie Perez, Judith Light, Itzhak Perlman, and Miriam Shor.

Rotten Tomatoes has now tabulated a score for Before out of 12 different critics' reviews. While it could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, it is a firmly Rotten 33%. This marks the worst Rotten Tomatoes score for a project with Crystal in a major role since 2012, when he starred in both Parental Guidance (18%) and Small Apartments (30%). In general, it is his worst score since 2016's The Comedian (24%), in which he made a cameo as himself.

Catherine Zeta-Jones' 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Established Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has an excellent filmography, but some of her best titles stand out more than others. Zeta-Jones career contains some of the best movies of all time, although some of her other projects are less prominent. However, these lesser-known films still demonstrate just why she is so talented. Zeta-Jones is best known for her roles in The Mask of Zorro and Chicago, two very different movies that highlight how versatile a performer she is.

In recent years, Zeta-Jones has slipped into the character of Morticia Addams, and the fact that Wednesday season 2 is taking so long has audiences begging to see the actress as the iconic Addams matriarch again. She is amazing in Wednesday, but this is only because of the skills and experience she has from appearing in several flicks. Apple TV+ Thriller, Before, Gets First Look & Stars Iconic Comedian Billy Crystal in Surprising Role
Image
Apple TV+ has now shared a first look at Before, revealing the first images of legendary comedian and star When Harry Met Sally... and City Slickers, Billy Crystal, in a very different kind of role. Before promises to be an atmospheric, character-driven psychological thriller and stars multi-award-winning actor, comedian and filmmaker Billy Crystal in the lead.

Before stars Crystal as Eli, a child psychiatrist who, after recently losing his wife, Lynn (Light), encounters a troubled young boy, Noah (Jupe), who seems to have a haunting connection to Elis past. As Eli attempts to help Noah, their mysterious bond deepens.

You can check out the newly released images of Before below. And they certainly paint a much darker, more sinister atmosphere than were used to seeing Crystal in.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader Reece and Hopefuls Charly and Kelly Talk “Surreal” ‘America’s Sweethearts’ Journey
Image
[This story contains spoilers from America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.]

The internet’s latest obsession, America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, has legions of viewers attempting the legendary cheer squad’s iconic “Thunderstruck” dance and, once again, talking about the hot-button topic of low NFL cheerleader pay.

The seven-episode Netflix docuseries brought viewers behind-the-scenes of the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders’ 2023-2024 squad tryouts, training camp and season. The Greg Whiteley-directed show has pulled the featured cheerleaders into the spotlight — much like the people featured in Whiteley’s other Netflix docuseries Cheer and Last Chance U.

America’s Sweethearts follows cheerleaders who were previously on the team, referred to as “vets” or “veterans,” while also introducing viewers to several rookie candidates — among them fan favorites Reece, Charly and Kelly.

Throughout the series, while the team is in training camp, an onscreen counter shows viewers the current number of rookies and veterans in the camp. The squad’s...

Emma Roberts on ‘Space Cadet,’ Blaming the Internet for ‘Madame Web’ Flopping and Being Protected as a Nickelodeon Child Star
Image
Emma Roberts knows that her new Prime Video movie, “Space Cadet,” is an any easy target for critics and cynics.

“It’s earnest,” she says on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. “And people are probably going to make fun of that, but it’s like, you know what, whatever. I think that it’s better to be earnest and do your best and be proud of what you do, no matter the reception.”

Roberts stars in the film, written and directed by “Purple Hearts” writer Liz W. Garcia, as Rex, a bartender who decides to pursue her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut. When she is accepted into NASA’s highly competitive astronaut-training program, things go sideways after learning that her best friend (“Hacks” actor Poppy Liu) had embellished her application.

“I just fell so in love with it,” Roberts recalls of reading the “Space Cadet” script. “I...

‘Bridgerton’ Season 3 Boots ‘Baby Reindeer’ from Netflix’s Top 10 All-Time List
Image
“Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton.” That’s what Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular TV (English) list looks like now.

Season 3 of the Shondaland period drama has now entered the streamer’s all-time list at number 10, booting “Baby Reindeer” and joining “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 on the leaderboard.

“Bridgerton” is the only series with three seasons on Netflix’s top 10 all-time list. “Stranger Things” is well-represented with Seasons 3 and 4, but its first two seasons came out before Netflix began to share viewership statistics.

Like many of its biggest shows, Netflix split “Bridgerton” Season 3 into two parts. Part 1 debuted on May 16; Part 2 launched on June 13.

Netflix’s top 10 is based on number of views over a TV season or a film’s first 91 days of availability — both “Bridgerton” Season 3 halves still have plenty of time to rack up more views in pursuit of the preceding seasons. “Baby Reindeer” has just a few days left before Netflix’s self-imposed cutoff.

The highlight of this month is undoubtedly the premiere of House of the Dragon season 2 on June 16. Episode 1 will drop on both HBO and Max that Sunday night at 9 p.m. Et. With the infamous Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons now underway, the next batch of episodes for this Game of Thrones prequel should be truly epic.

Arriving before House of the Dragon season 2 is another story of a fraught succession. Ren Faire, a documentary series about an ailing king retiring from the country’s largest renaissance festival, premieres on June 2. Other TV options this month include Julio Torres comedy Fantasmas on June 7 and docuseries One South: Portrait of a Psych Unit on June 25.

Max plays host to a couple of major movies in June as well. The...

The ‘America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders’ Trailer Proves Those Jump-Splits Take a Toll
Image
Are you optimistic about the Dallas Cowboys 2024 NFL season? Well, recent history suggests you probably shouldn’t be. (Giants fan over here.) But there is something exciting leading in to the summer’s training camp: a new cheerleading docuseries from director Greg Whiteley, the man behind Netflix’s “Cheer” and “Last Chance U.”

“America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” a collection of seven 45-minute episodes, will follow the 2023-24 squad (last season’s team) from start to finish — meaning from their auditions to the team’s inevitable late-regular-season or early-post-season collapse. The cheerleaders are led by their longtime director Kelli Finglass.

The docuseries, which is definitely not “Cheer” Season 3 (except it definitely should be), premieres on June 20 on Netflix.

Whiteley executive produces alongside Adam Leibowitz for One Potato Productions; Andrew Fried and Dane Lillegard of Boardwalk Pictures and Ross M. Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans of Campfire Studios also executive produce for their respective companies.

Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Reality Show Lands at Netflix
Image
The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders once again will be the subject of an unscripted series — this time at Netflix.

The streamer says its show, titled America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, will premiere in the summer and counts Cheer and Last Chance U’s Greg Whiteley among its executive producers (he also directs). The Netflix series will debut some two-and-a-half years after the long-running Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team ended after 16 seasons on CMT.

Where the latter show often had the structure of a competition series, America’s Sweethearts — at least based on a brief teaser — looks to bring more of a polished, behind-the-scenes feel to its seven episodes. The show will chronicle the 2023-24 season for the cheerleaders and will “document the personal stories behind the uniforms,” according to Netflix’s description.

“The kind of access and creative freedom we need to make the kind of work we want to...

Call Netflix’s Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Docuseries What It Is: ‘Cheer’ Season 3
Image
Greg Whiteley has a new sports docuseries at Netflix that really isn’t new at all. The seven-episode (at 45-minutes apiece) “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” will premiere this summer on Netflix. The streamer first announced the series on Thursday, when it also put out a teaser (below).

Greg Whiteley… Netflix… cheerleading docuseries… Why does this all sound so familiar? Oh yeah, it’s because Whiteley is the guy behind Netflix’s two-season docuseries “Cheer” (as well as the equally excellent five-season “Last Chance U”).

Fans of “Cheer” have been not-so-patiently waiting for a third season, so… isn’t this just that? Why not call “America’s Sweethearts” what it really is: “Cheer” Season 3. That’s what we want.

There’s plenty of precedent here. While “Cheer” Seasons 1 and 2 focused on competitive collegiate cheerleading (mostly) at Navarro College (also in Texas!), Whiteley’s precursor “Last Chance U” not only changed schools — it changed sports.

Kate Hudson Says ‘It’s Hard to Get Male Movie Stars to Make’ a Romantic Comedy: ‘If We Can Get More Marvel Guys … Come Do a Rom-Com’
Image
Kate Hudson appeared on “The View” and reflected on the recent 20th anniversary of her iconic romantic comedy “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” The genre has lost much its box office dominance in the decades since Hudson first linked up with Matthew McConaughey to the tune of $105 million at the domestic box office and $177 million worldwide. For comparison’s sake, the just-released rom-com “Anyone But You,” starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, has earned a decent $38 million and counting worldwide.

“It’s hard to get male movie stars to make rom-coms,” Hudson said about the current state of the genre. “That’s a big part of the equation … is to have that event. If we can get more Marvel guys like … hey, come to do a rom-com! That’s part of the formula, too. That event.”

Not only do you need the star power, but “I think it’s about the writing,...

Julia Roberts Turned Down Meg Ryan’s ‘You’ve Got Mail’ Role Amid Rom-Com Streak, Says ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Warrants a Sequel
Image
Julia Roberts is an icon of the romantic-comedy genre, but there’s one famous rom-com the Oscar-winner happened to turn down: Nora Ephron’s 1998 classic “You’ve Got Mail.” Roberts revealed the scoop during a recent appearance on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.”

Ephron’s film memorably paired Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the story of business rivals unaware they are falling in love with each other online. “You’ve Got Mail” marked the third Hanks-Ryan romantic comedy after “Joe Versus the Volcano” (1990) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), the latter title also being directed by Ephron. Had Roberts taken the role, it would’ve extended her 1990s rom-com streak that already included hits like “Pretty Woman” (1990), “Notting Hill” (1999) and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997).

Asked by a fan to name some roles she has turned down in career, Roberts stressed that she does not regret any of her choices. She said any...

Alan Arkin, the Oscar-winning actor who starred in films like Little Miss Sunshine, Argo, and Glengarry Glen Rose during a career that spanned over 60 years, has died at the age of 89.

Arkin’s sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony confirmed their father’s death in a statement to People. “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man,” his sons wrote. “A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.” No cause of death was provided.

Alan Arkin Dead at 89: Actor Was a Comic Great from ‘The Russians Are Coming’ to ‘Argo’
Image
Acting legend Alan Arkin is dead at age 89.

The Oscar, Tony, Emmy, BAFTA, SAG, and Golden Globe winner passed away at his home.

Perhaps best known for his roles in “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “Little Miss Sunshine,” for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, Arkin began his acting career in 1957 — and ended up with a body of work of startling range. Arkin was an early member of the Second City comedy troupe and starred on Broadway with his Tony-winning turn in 1963’s “Enter Laughing.”

His film breakout was via comedy as well: in his first major onscreen role in Norman Jewison’s 1967 Cold War caper “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming” he plays the “political officer” on a Soviet submarine that runs aground on a small New England island of only 200 residents. The sub’s captain, too embarrassed to radio the motherland for help, sends...

Every John Cusack Romcom, Ranked
Image
For about two decades, from the mid-80s through the mid-00s, John Cusack was one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men. He anchored comedies, dramas, and action films with equal success. And he had great romantic chemistry with a laundry list of actresses.

Over the past 20 years, the outspoken actor has spent more time on political causes than good movies, appearing in a series of forgettable direct-to-video projects. But in his prime, Cusack effortlessly inhabited a certain brand of wry but relatable protagonist. He had a “ladies want him, guys want to be him” quality that landed him the lead in more than a half dozen romantic comedies. Following is a list of Cusack’s rom-coms, ranked from worst to best.

America’s Sweethearts (2001)

On paper, America's Sweethearts looked like a slam dunk. Co-written by Billy Crystal, the movie stars Cusack, Julia Roberts, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Hank Azaria, Stanley Tucci,...

A Force to Be Remembered: Mark Hamill Praises Carrie Fisher’s ‘Star Wars’ Legacy Ahead of Walk of Fame Honor
Image
In her 2011 memoir, “Shockaholic,” Carrie Fisher opens with a quote from Jewish poet, playwright and paratrooper Hannah Senesh: “There are stars whose radiance is visible on Earth though they have long been extinct. There are people whose brilliance continues to light the world though they are no longer among the living. These lights are particularly bright when the night is dark. They light the way for humankind.”

Self-deprecating to a fault, it’s unlikely Fisher would’ve ever referred to herself in such complimentary terms, but six years after her death, and soon to be bestowed with her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 4, it’s impossible to ignore the way her brilliance continues to permeate our cultural consciousness, and how much dimmer the world seems without her.

Although she became synonymous with one undeniably iconic character, Fisher never allowed herself to be defined by playing Princess Leia Organa,...

‘The Staircase’s’ Michael Peterson Slams Series as ‘Homophobic,’ Calls Colin Firth ‘Not My Favorite Actor’ (Exclusive)
Image
Michael Peterson has spent the last 20 years explaining the death of his wife Kathleen. First, he stood trial for allegedly murdering her, and was convicted in 2003 and sentenced to life. He was released pending a new trial in 2011, and in 2017 pleaded guilty to manslaughter in an Alford plea.

After being released from prison, he largely kept a lower profile, mainly talking about his life in relation to the investigation and trial as it was presented in the 2004 documentary “The Staircase,” which he participated in with his four children — Clayton and Todd Peterson and Margaret and Martha Ratliff. (He also had a 13-year relationship with one of the editors of the doc; they broke up shortly after he was released from jail.)

But Peterson’s quiet period appears to have ended. Of late, after being back in the news because HBO Max has semi-fictionalized his family tragedy into a limited series called “The Staircase,...

Gnarly Red Band Trailer for 'America: The Motion Picture' on Netflix
Estados Unidos: La película (2021)
"Ding dong, it's America M-Fer!" Netflix has released one more trailer for the animated comedy America: The Motion Picture, a final red band trailer packed with profanity and violence galore. Which is befitting America's sordid history. Debuting on Netflix today - just in time for the 4th of July weekend. In this wildly tongue-in-cheek animated revisionist history, a chainsaw-wielding George Washington assembles a team of rabble rousers — beer-loving bro Sam Adams, famed scientist Thomas Edison, acclaimed horseman Paul Revere, and a pissed off Geronimo — to defeat Benedict Arnold and King James in the American Revolution. This animated movie stars "America's sweethearts" — Channing Tatum (as G.W.), Jason Mantzoukas, Olivia Munn, Judy Greer, Bobby Moynihan (as Paul), Raoul Max Trujillo (as Geronimo), Killer Mike, Andy Samberg, Will Forte, and Simon Pegg (as King James). This is very similar to the original trailer, just with some added "red band" material. It may be extra dumb,...

Animated 'America: The Motion Picture' Trailer with Channing Tatum
Estados Unidos: La película (2021)
"I'm George Washington. Let's go start a f*&!ing revolution!" Time to celebrate 'Merica! Netflix dropped an official trailer for the animated comedy America: The Motion Picture, from Matt Thompson. In this wildly tongue-in-cheek animated revisionist history, a chainsaw-wielding George Washington assembles a team of rabble rousers — including beer-loving bro Sam Adams, famed scientist Thomas Edison, acclaimed horseman Paul Revere, and a pissed off Geronimo — to defeat Benedict Arnold and King James in the American Revolution. Who will win? No one knows, but you can be sure of one thing: these are not your father's Founding... uh, Fathers. This stars "America's sweethearts" Channing Tatum (as G.W.), Jason Mantzoukas, Olivia Munn, Judy Greer, Bobby Moynihan (as Paul), Raoul Max Trujillo (as Geronimo), Killer Mike, Andy Samberg, Will Forte, and Simon Pegg (as King James). This looks totally insane in the best of ways. Can't wait to watch this and laugh my ass off.
