Trail City is plagued by gunfighters and cowhands blowing off steam at the end of a cattle drive. The town council tries to persuade Wild Bill Elliott take the job, but he declines, stating that he's a peaceable man. Bill gets riled when Valley Keene, a cowgirl visiting from Colorado, disrupts a picnic and pins on the badge to arrest her for disturbing the peace. Intending to return the badge later that afternoon after teaching the young woman a lesson, Bill is forced to accept the position permanently when his childhood friend commits a murder and no one else can bring the man to justice.
