A rather weak Survivor Series, with a few highlights
gridoon20244 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
You know something's wrong when the most memorable thing that happens in a PPV happens outside the ring; I'm talking about Stone Cold Steve Austin being "ran over" by a car and taken to the hospital. Of course you might think that doing a storyline like that only a few months after Owen Hart had died for real in the middle of a PPV is in VERY poor taste, but that's Vince McMahon for ya. Another historically important thing that takes place in "Survivor Series 1999" is the inauspicious PPV debut of Kurt Angle; who would have guessed that he would become such an enduring, popular star after the glaring indifference he receives from the crowd here? You almost feel sorry for him. The most exciting match of the night is by far Chyna vs. Chris Jericho, for the Intercontinental Title. It has a steady pace, lots of two-counts and surprising kick-outs, the crowd is into it (mostly cheering for Jericho), and Miss Kitty is amazingly hot as Chyna's valet! The other matches are mostly average; the women's "sudden death" match is a 2-minute joke, as is the 4-on-1 elimination match with the Big Show. The main event is a by-the-numbers brawl, with just one highlight: the Rock and HHH jointly suplexing the Big Show onto the Spanish announce table. Lastly, I wish JR and The King would shut up about Stone Cold at the hospital during the last 3 matches.

Another Mediocre 99 PPV.

Warning: Spoilers
Survivor Series 1999 Thoughts

Survivor Series 1999 was the 13th annual Survivor Series PPV event produced by the WWF. It took place on November 14, 1999 at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Attendance was at 18,735 with a very good buyrate of 448,000. Event is notable for being the in-ring debut of Kurt Angle on TV (who looked like the type of guy who just sucks) and a storyline angle taking place that had Austin off TV for a while. Heading towards the end of 1999, the WWF business was booming and kicking the lights out of rival WCW.

10 matches took place on the card with a build up triple threat match as the main event. Triple H was set to defend the WWF Championship against The Rock and Stone Cold. Unfortunately Stone Cold was replaced by the Big Show in the middle of the show with an angle of a mysterious person charging a hit-in run incident on Austin that gave him an injury he was forced to recover from. In reality, Austin needed spinal surgery to repair damage stemming from a serious neck injury he got over two years prior at SummerSlam 1997 in a match against Owen Hart. The undercard featured some title matches, our regular survivor series matches and Kurt Angle having his introduction in a match against Shawn Stasiak (*Korath: Who?*)

The Good - I really enjoyed one of the traditional survivor series matches which was the one that featured the likes of Edge & Christian, The Hardys, Too Cool and the Hollys. The crowd (which was not that good for the night) wasn't really invested into the match but months later the talent in the ring would start to get over more of course with 2 of the teams becoming some of the greatest tag teams in history. You look at the talent before the match started, I definitely expected at least an above average match and it was good. As for the main event, it was really good. Had a bit of a side effect due to something I believe was a mistake but I'll get to it later. It overall was fun and a good closure to the show.

The Meh - I guess Chyna vs. Chris Jericho was entertaining but again, you still saw a bit of a slow start for Y2J's early WWF run of being underutilized. Really though. Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Stasiak was a decent match. It was really just a match to introduce Kurt Angle and put him over and he looked good actually. Of course he becomes a hot rookie and one of the all time greats. The tag team championship match was a bit slow paced that went on too long and the opening was quite forgettable but fun opener.

The Bad - I don't recommend the Survivor Series match involving the likes of Val Venis, Mark Henry and British Bulldog as it really wasn't a good match and it lead to nothing. The Women's match which I'm not sure was suppose to just be comedy was awful and a waste of time. Kane & X-Pac had potential but it's DQ ruined it. They did have a better match a month later no doubt. I also feel we didn't have a good atmosphere tonight for even some of the most over stars.

Overall - First half of the show kind of stinked and things got a little more interesting towards the middle. This was at the end of 99 where in-ring quality started to Improve based on talent signing and booking with Vince Russo moving on next door. I also think advertising Austin only to planned on not having him compete was a bad move. At the end, more like an extended Raw than a PPV.

Score - 5 out of 10: Mediocre

It was okay
pmayerle15 July 2001
This was an okay ppv with some ups, and some downs. The first match was good. It was fun to see the Acolytes and the Dudleys turn on each other and lose the match. Kurt Angle had his first match in the WWF against Shawn Stasiak. I don't know why he got so much hype before he debuted; his first opponent was Shawn Stasiak for God's sake. The X-Pac, Kane match was a dissapointment. The eight man tag matches were okay, except for the women's (it was too short, in my view and the teams were mis-matched). The IC title match between Jericho and Chyna was great. The WWF title match was good also. Austin getting hit by the car was a little weird, though. I mean, if I saw a car coming at me, I think I'd try to run.

Arguably the end of the "Attitude" era
bh_tafe37 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Steve Austin got run over by a car, Chris Jericho lost to a woman, Big Show won his first WWE Title and Kurt Angle made his in ring debut in an entertaining show.

The finish to the No Mercy PPV made it pretty clear that a Triple H vs Rock vs Austin main event was coming here. But they took a pretty interesting path there with the Rock joining forces with Mankind and winning the tag team championship. But Al Snow in what turned out to be an elaborate ruse, convinced Mankind that Rock didn't actually like him. Mankind betrayed the Rock and left him to defend the tag belts on his own against the New Age Outlaws. Snow then arranged for Val venis to interfere in Mankind's WWE Title match with Triple H on RAW, costing him the title. Mankind joined a tag team with Snow and Rock was added to the title match here.

The night began with a 4 on 4 Survivor Series match which saw the lower card team of The Godfather, D Lo Brown, Mosh and Thrasher defeat the Acolytes (now the Acolyte Protection Agency or APA) and the Dudleyz. The APA and Dudleyz didn't really get along, and after Mosh was eliminated by a Bradshaw clothesline and Thrasher by a 3D. Bradshaw then got DQ'd for smashing D Lo with a chair, D-Von and Faarooq got in a punch up and were both counted out, leaving Bubbah ray to take a Ho Train and a Lo Down and eat the final pin.

Next match saw Kurt Angle make his WWE in ring debut, defeating Shawn Stasiak in a pretty poor match. Angle would go on a long wining streak and within 11 months would win the European, Intercontinental and WWE Championships, as well as the King of the Ring and be in the main event of Summerslam. Quite the first year for Kurt.

Next match was a rather dull affair, another 4 on 4 match, which saw Val Venis, Mark Henry, gangrel and Steve Blackman defeat the British Bulldog and the Mean Street Posse. Henry and Venis were the survivors and British Bulldog the last one eliminated.

Next up comes a 4 on 4, non Survivor Series tag match which saw Mae Young, the Fabulous Moolah, Tori and Debra defeat Ivory, Jacqueline, Luna and Terri. You know from the names involved that this was a short awful match.

Next came the big rivalry match pitting former tag team champions X-Pac and Kane against each other. The match occurred because of jealousy caused by X-Pac winning a 4 man elimination match at the previous PPV. X-Pac had told Kane he wasn't worthy of being part of his DX stable and DX members Triple H and the New Age Outlaws came down and interfered in the match. Kane wins by DQ and then saves his girlfriend Tory from the invading DX.

Triple H attacked the Rock while he was giving an interview backstage right before our next match, which saw the Big Show defeat the useless team of Mideon, Prince Albert, Viscera and the Big Boss Man. Boss Man had earned the ire of Big Show by making him think his father had died in a car accident. Amazingly this feud would make it all the way to the main event, but not on this night, Boss Man having the good sense to run away after Show had taken care of Mideon, Albert and Viscera in less than a minute. Originally, Show had a team for this match, but he took them out before the match on Sunday Night Heat.

Next up came the segment that, for some, signaled the end of the attitude era, Steve Austin was being interviewed about his title match when Triple H, being an equal opportunity jack ass, attacked Austin, who then pursued Triple H backstage where he was run over by a car, putting him out of tonight's match and indefinitely. Austin was actually taking time off for neck surgery.

Next match saw Chyna successfully defend the Intercontinental Championship, defeating Chris Jericho following a low blow. Not a great match.

Next up saw the Holly Cousins and Too Cool defeat Edge and Christian and the Hardyz (the Two Broods(?)). The Hardyz and E+C were in a classic tag ladder match at No Mercy where they had developed a respect for each other. This was a pretty good match, with Edge and Matt Hardy leaving early, before Scotty 2 Hotty was eliminated, followed by Jeff Hardy, Christian then took out Grandmaster Sexay and Crash Holly, only for Hardcore Holly to pin Christian with a victory roll to win the match as the sole survivor.

The New Age Outlaws retained the WWE Tag Team Championship with a victory over Mankind and Al Snow, with Gunn pinning Foley. Decent match.

Brings us to the main event which saw Triple H and the Rock make their way to the ring. Howard Finkel announces that Stone Cold won't be participating in the match, but taking his spot will be: The Big Show! Both Rock and Triple H react to this with a mixture of fear and outrage. DX and the McMahons both interfere in the match. DX costing Rock the title. Vince McMahon then comes to the ring and hits Triple H with the WWE Championship belt allowing Show to hit the Chokeslam, get the pin and become WWE Champion for the first time.

So, where is all of this Vince vs Triple H stuff heading? Who will get the first PPV shot at the new champion's title? And could Jericho get that Intercontinental Championship from Chyna? With Steve Austin out, things are going to be very different and it's going to need a reset and a focused direction for the WWE to stay on top with their biggest star gone.

A Lot Of Weirdness Sets An Odd Tone
zkonedog7 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Coming off the heels of a mostly disappointing SummerSlam in 1999, the Survivor Series was once again mostly another dud. While the matches themselves improve a bit, there is just a bit too much odd behavior all-around (especially the broadcast booth) for this event to be all that good.

Some of my thoughts...

-Debut of Kurt Angle, who would go on to have a nice WWE career. -Kane vs X-Pac (the latter of which really puts on a great show) might be the best overall match on the entire card. A good performance and they didn't try to make too much of it. -I was never the biggest fan of Chyna or Jericho, so this match didn't really do much for me. -The New Age Outlaws reunite and make a strong case for being legitimately one of the most influential tag-teams in WWE history. Their gimmick and call-and-response routine is memorable, and always generated a big pop.

One thing I found quite odd in this event was the performance of the Ross/Lawler performance team. First, the cringe-worthy sexual references fly fast and loose in the early-goings, to the point where it was clear that must have been a company talking point or philosophy at the time (one I would agree is not needed or a good long-term strategy). Then, once Steve Austin is "taken out" of the main event via the car crash, Ross spends the rest of the broadcast oddly arguing quite profusely with Lawler over the severity of that event. Far too much of an over-sell, if you ask me. All this created a strange overall tone for the night.

The finale (Big Show/HHH/Rock) is above-average, but that's about it. The action never stops all the way through (very fast-paced), but I felt like the event didn't have a ton of heat or crowd response behind it, either.

Overall, this is another sub-par WWE event to close out 1999, a year that had begun so strong. From what I remember, the product would once again improve as the new millennium dawned, but as of this even it was in a bit of a rut.

This is not surviving well
paudieconnolly8 February 2024
A very poor survivor series . The two teams of four with single eliminations until one team stands alone. Is a he formula that begins this series back in the 80s. Only used for three matches could have been four but the big show didn't want any team mates. Looking on the positives of the night was originally aired on my birthday luckily I didn't waste the day watching. Chyna Chris Jericho for the intercontinental title making more history Kurt Angel makes his debut in the company is a pretty important moment. The main event features triple H The Rock and the big show overall not show will live long in the.

Recap of Survivor Series 1999
Spawn Devil30 June 2002
Match 1: Godfather, D'Lo Brown, and the Headbangers vs. Acolytes and Dudley Boyz Eight Man Elimination Match Godfather came out first with all his hos and did his thing on the mic. Dlo comes out next dressed up in pimp attire. Very similar to the Godfather except Dlo had a top hat, cane, and a cigar. Headbangers come out next. They are dressed like something from out of the 70's, afros and all. Dudleys came out next dressed as they nornally would be. Buh Buh gets on the mic and asks the Godfather if he is going to offer them the hos. Buh Buh stutters on the word ho. Godfather replied back stuttering no. Acolytes came out as their normal badass selves. Mosh and Buh Buh lock up to start off the match. A few minutes later Bradshaw is tagged in and hits Thrasher with the clothesline from hell to eliminate him. Dudleys eliminate Mosh with 3D. Bradshaw brings a chair in the ring and hits Dlo and Buh Buh. The referee eliminates Bradshaw via DQ. Dvon and Faarooq fought all the way to the back to be counted out/eliminated. Buh Buh hits Dlo with a top rope Buh Buh bomb. Dlo kicked out at two. Dlo eliminates Buh Buh after Godfather hit Buh Buh with the ho train then Dlo did the lowdown on him to get the win. Winners: Godfather and Dlo Brown

Match 2 Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Stasiak The match starts off with Angle doing a fireman's carry takeover on Stasiak. Ironically, there are some boring chants early in the match. During the match Angle gets on the mic and tells the crowd they shouldn't booo an olympic gold medalist. Angle ends up getting the pin on Stasiak with a modified fall away slam. Ross did a good job of trying to get Angle over as a heel by saying he is getting heavily booed. Actually I didn't hear much booing at all except for the first part of the match. Winner: Kurt Angle

Match 3 Val Venis, Mark Henry, Gangrel & Steve Blackman vs. The Bulldog, Joey Abs, Rodney & Pete Gas Eight Man Elimination Match Val and Bulldog started off the match. Bulldog did his vertical suplex on Val then tagged in Pete Gas. A few minutes later in the match Blackman eliminates Pete with a big boot to the face. Gangrel eliminates Rodney with a ddt. Mark Henry eliminates Joey Abs with a splash. Bulldog is the only man left on his team now. Bulldog eliminates Gangrel with a superplex. Bulldog eliminates Blackman with a fisherman's suplex. Henry splashes Bulldog and Val follows up with the money shot to eliminate Bulldog. Winners: Val Venis and Mark Henry

Match 4 Ivory, Jacqueline, Luna, and Terri vs. Tori, Debra, Fabulous Moolah, and Mae Young One Fall - Sudden Death Match The match started off when Mae Young attacked Ivory before she ever made it to the ring. Mae Young pins Ivory with help from Moolah on a double clothesline. Short match. Lots of fighting after the match though. The key to this match is that it was a sudden death match. Winners: Tori, Debra, Fabulous Moolah, and Mae Young

Match 5 X-Pac vs Kane Match starts off with Kane over powering Xpac. Kane hoists Xpac up in the air, chokes him, then drops him. Xpac dropkicks Kane off the top to the floor. Xpac sends Kane into the ring steps. Back in ring Kane with uppercuts to the throat of Xpac. Xpac comes back with a spinning heel kick. Xpac goes for the bronco buster buts gets caught in a choke hold and then a backbreaker. Kane comes off the top with a clothesline on Xpac. Kane follows up with a chokeslam. RoadDogg comes out and pulls Kane off the pin attempt. Xpac hits the x-factor but Kane kicks out. Triple H hits Kane in the head with the belt as Kane was fixing to tombstone Xpac. All of DX attack Kane. Tori comes out to try to make a save but gets a spinning heel kick from Xpac for her troubles. Kane gets to his feet and DX clears the ring. EMT's come out to check on Tori. Winner: Kane by DQ

Match 6: Big Boss Man, Prince Albert, Viscera, and Mideon vs. Big Show, Taka, Funaki, and Blue Meanie Eight Man Elimination Match Big Show eliminates Mideon and Prince Albert in the first minute of the match with chokeslams. A couple of minutes later Big Show eliminates Viscera with the choke slam. Bossman is the only person left. He's so scared he leaves the ring and gets counted out/eliminated. It should be noted that Big Show won the whole match in less than five minutes before his partners even came out. But then again, he beat his partners up on Sunday Night Heat, so they were not going to come out anyways. Winner: Big Show

Match 7 Chris Jericho vs. Chyna Intercontinental Championship Match Match starts off with Kitty and Chyna putting the boots to Jericho. Chyna dropkicks Jericho in the gut while Jericho got stuck in the tree of woe briefly. Chyna does a huricanrana on Jericho then gives him several shots to the face. Jericho clothesline Chyna coming off the ring apron out to the floor. Jericho tosses Chyna into the announce position then pours a drink on her. Jericho exposes the steel on the security wall and slams Chyna at it. Back in ring Jericho comes off the top with a missile dropkick for a 2 count. Jericho does a vertical suplex on Chyna and gets a 2 count after a lame cover. Jericho taunts Miss Kitty by gyrating his hips towards her. Jericho kisses Kitty outside the ring. Kitty jumps on his back but Jericho drops her with a snapmare. Jericho powerbombs Chyna and she kicks out at 2. Jericho misses the lionsault then Chyna starts to make a comeback. Chyna does two handsprings into a back elbow on Jericho then a ddt but only gets a 2 count out of it. Jericho hits Chyna with the belt. Chyna kicks out at 2. Chyna puts the pedigree on Jericho. Jericho kicks out at 2. Jericho puts Chyna in the walls of Jericho. Chyna makes it to the ropes. Jericho had thought he won. Chyna counters a superplex from Jericho with a shot to the croth then pedigree's him from the top for the 3 count. Winner and still IC Champ: Chyna

Match 8 The Hollys and Too Much vs. Edge, Christian, and the Hardys Eight Man Elimination Match Match starts off with Taylor and Edge going at it trading chops. Bodies start to fly everywhere on the outside. Hardcore Holly eliminates Edge with a rollup by surprise. Taylor eliminates Matt Hardy. Too Much double powerbombs Jeff Hardy. Jeff kicks out at two. Jeff Hardy eliminates Scott Taylor with a 1 and a 1/2 splash. Awesome move. Brian Christopher eliminates Jeff Hardy with a top rope leg drop. Christian eliminates Brian Christopher with a reverse ddt. So now it's down to Christian against the Hollys. Christian eliminates Crash with a tomakazie. Hardcore eliminates Christain for the win. Hardcore has Christian on his shoulders. Christian was trying to counter but Hardcore dropped him right to the mat for the pin. Winner: Hardcore Holly

Match 9 Mankind & Al Snow vs. New Age Outlaws Tag Team Championship Match Match starts off with Mr Ass backing Mankind into the corner with kicks and fists. Mr Ass hits a neckbreaker on Mankind for a 2 count. Mr Ass puts Mankind in a sleeper. Ass and Manind roll out to the floor. NAO double team Mankind. Back in ring Al hits RoadDogg with a jawbreaker. Al hits RoadDogg with a chair on the outside. Al slings RoadDogg into a clothesline from Mankind. Al repeatedly stomps on RoadDogg in the corner. Mankind hits RoadDogg with a running knee lift for a 2 count. RoadDogg does the juke n jive on Al. All four men going at it now. The fight spills to the outside. Mr Ass drops Al across an announce table. Later on in the match Al almost takes RoadDogg's head off with a clothesline. Mr Ass hits the fameasser on Mankind. RoadDogg makes the cover but Mankind kicks out at two. Mankind goes downstairs on RoadDogg then hits him with a double arm ddt. Al hits Mr Ass with head. Mankind covers but only gets a two. NAO hit Mankind with a spike piledriver for the 3 count. Winners and still tag champs: New Age Outlaws

Match 10 The Rock vs. Triple H vs. Big Show Triple Threat Match for the World Wrestling Federation Championship In this match Vince McMahon is supposed to be the special referee but he is at the hospital with Steve Austin, who is also supposed to be in this match, but has head trauma. Right now we don't know who the third person is going to be. But wait. It's the Big Show. Earl Hebner is the referee. Match starts off with Big Show dominating Rock and Triple H. The Rock hits Big Show from behind as he was fixing to chokeslam Triple H. Rock and Triple H clothesline Big Show to the outside. The Rock posts Big Show on the ring post. Big Show puts his foot in Triple H's throat in the corner. Rock hits Big Show with a side russian leg sweep. Rock connects with the people's elbow on the Big Show but Triple H makes the save. Rock counters the pedigree and catapults Triple H into the turnbuckle. Rock hits the rock bottom on Triple H. Shane comes out to make the count but only a 2. After a second rock bottom on Triple H, Big Show pulls Shane out of the ring. Big Show attacks Rock on the main announce table. Big Show sends Rock into the ring steps. Triple H has the belt in his hands. Shane takes it away from him. Triple H pedigrees Shane. Rock with a ddt on Triple H. Big Show knocks out Rock with an elbow. DX come down to the ring and attack Rock and Big Show. Here comes Vince. Vince knocks out Triple H with the belt. Big Show chokeslams Triple H and covers him while Vince makes the three count. After the match Rock has some words with Vince while Big Show celebrates in the ring. Winner and new WWF champion: Big Show

Very unexpected ending to this last match. Well, I would still give it a decent C+
