Frightening & Intense Scenes
-
- documentary of white rural Iowa third graders experiencing discrimination in a controlled classroom exercise two days after Martin Luther King Jr was shot. The sense of helplessness is evident on their faces, then the switch day when they become "superior", then the follow up assessment the third day, and 14 years later reinforces the idea that children survived being discriminated against, but would not ever act in a prejudiced manner toward anyone else ever again having had that experience. And they grow up stronger, kinder, more understanding as adults. They learn to respect themselves and one another more than would otherwise have been the case had they NOT been through the exercise with teacher Jane Elliott. In fact the bonds these former students have is as close if not closer than they have with biological family. They have been through a "war" of sorts, a bonding experience which forever changed their lives. It is intense, I don't think frightening, more enlightening.
