The darker side of the bitterness of divorce
cosmic_quest22 May 2006
'Taming Andrew' (as this film is titled in the UK) is an insight into how children abducted from their custodial parent by the parent who lost the court battles are not always raised in happy, loving environments. It is a sad film into how one child's life was devastated by his bitter father whose only interest in his son was to use him as a means to hurt his ex-wife.

The film centres on Gail, whose second husband Eddie has become a loving father figure to her three-year-old son Andrew, with the three of them forming a close family unit. However, Andrew's natural father Ted still have visitation rights so one summer afternoon he arrives to take his young son for the day. Only this time, he has no intention of returning the boy. Five years pass, during which a devastated Gail never gives up on her son, when suddenly Ted calls and announces he's sending Andrew home. But the withdrawn, emotionally-stunted eight-year-old Gail and Eddie collect is a far cry from the sunny-natured toddler they remembered. Gail soon discovers that while she might physically have her son back, she faces another fight to help this skittish, traumatised child reintegrate into the family and into society in general while finding the key to unlocking what brutalities he endured at the hands of his father during the years he was missing.

Young Seth Adkins was absolutely phenomenal as Andrew, giving a breath-taking performance of a little boy who is emotionally deeply hurt and whose behaviour is almost feral in nature. Through Adkins', you truly get a sense that Andrew is very much a frustrated and angry boy taught to react on instinct, knowing what he's doing is often wrong but is unable to stop himself even though he really does just want to be 'normal'. Park Overall also gives a strong performance as Gail, the devoted mother who is determined never to give up on her son while battling her own underlying guilt for letting him go with Ted in the first place.

'Taming Andrew' really depicts the hard lives faced by many children involved in familial abduction where they are often made to move from place-to-place and, in the case of those kidnapped out of vindictiveness rather than love, they have to endure abuse by those who are meant to care for them. In many ways, Andrew's situation is made worse by the fact it was his own father who ruined his childhood rather than some random stranger and this is something touched upon in the film. It also shows that when children are returned, it isn't easy to adjust back into their family and school (and I imagine that is the case even for kids who have been well-cared for).

This is a poignant film that doesn't deviate from the realities of surviving child abuse and abduction with engaging performances by all involved. It might be a made-for-TV drama but it's still first class.

So many victims like Andrew still waiting to be found
wvhpgfn16 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There are no words for law enforcement that won't even help to find children it's because of their lack of care or concern so many are still missing if they had put this monster in the computer right away this one child wouldn't have been missing he took this child out of jealousy hate and spite not because he loved him he knew he was inadequate as a person and father so he didn't want his son to have a better man in his life and he was jealous she moved on but I also have a issue with putting him alone in dark room with doors closed after going through what he did he needed supervision and to be monitored and how does any parent sleep all night without checking on their children at some time to makes sure they are ok like babies alone in a cold nursery while their door is also shut how can you hear anything that is going on in the home that weird he could have taken the baby and walked out that house never to be seen again my kids are grown now but I still wake up to check my house or to listen to see how it's sound's outside the mom should have been staying in his room at night with him I don't understand why she didn't and put chimes on the doorknob so they would make a noise if he went out the room everything was not ok or normal enough for them to do what they were.

An emotional rollercoaster
Patrick-9611 December 2000
I hadn't planned on viewing this film. I had been watching the program before it and simply didn't turn the television off or change the channel. After about 15 minutes into it, I was pulled into the strong story. The film was thoroughly engrossing and the performances, especially that of young Seth Adkins, were superb. I found myself in tears throughout the film and the ending caused me to completely break down. I can't recommend this film enough. Next time it's on, please don't miss it.

A must watch movie
Boone12528 December 2006
Here is a movie that will keep you thinking about it into the next day. The story is about a kidnapped child who is returned to his mother after 5 years. Yes, this movie would be very hard for anyone to watch who has experienced real life child abuse or kidnapping. You will feel the mothers pain and struggle while trying to get their life back together. You will come to understand the child's anger. Other movies based on true a story never had the impact on me that this one did. This one tears at your heart the whole time. Park Overall plays the mom who stays focused to one thing, getting the boy back physically and emotionally. The performance of the little boy played by Seth Adkins was so exceptional you feel like he was the actual child this happened to. Even if you don't like tearjerkers, watch it for the performances.

Poignant and touching, a movie with a heart
sporti-chic9 January 2008
'After an abduction of five years, a mother must fight for the love of her son.......before she loses him forever'

A beautifully told heartbreaking true story. With believable performances from all of the cast, the young Seth Adkins in the title role of Andrew was fantastic. He carried out even the most emotionally harrowing scenes with credibility and flair, making his character lovable despite his withdrawn and odd behaviour. You can feel all the characters' pain and joy throughout and the film is not to be forgotten easily. It speaks to the heart, and will leave an impression behind.

This is a story of loving unconditionally, of never giving up on somebody, and believing the best of them. It is inspiring, and shows the strength of bond between a mother and her child.

This is a brilliant film to watch with your family, as it is suitable for most ages. I would recommend this highly.

When Andrew Came Home-Well Worth Waiting For ****
edwagreen17 July 2008
Marvelous true-story about a child taken by his father to get revenge on his ex-wife. It's the story of an adorable child who is brought back 5 years later as not only older but severely socially and mentally maladjusted from this horrible experience.

The film deals with the attempts by his mother and stepfather to bring the child back to the normal world. What a rocky road they had before them. The child no longer spoke to them, accidentally sets fire to their house and there may be possible jealousy brewing with the baby brother who has been born in the interim.

We have a fine acting performance by Park Overall as the distraught mother.

Even though she rejects the idea of sending the boy to a school for troubled children, she was really looking for trouble in sending the child to a regular school. Obviously, he was way behind academically and socially. She finally takes him out and home schools him.

After a bitter outburst by the child when he hears what his mother says, he finally talks and tells her of the abuse he had gone through.

This because also deals with the bureaucratic red tape that the mother had to endure when she filed a missing person's report.

This is a movie of rare quality that should not be missed for its psychological, sociological, and psychiatric implications.

One of the most touching movies I have ever watched!!!
srmccarthy24 February 2001
Warning: Spoilers
Andrew was kidnapped at age 3, by his Father. Then returned to his mother 5 years later! He is distant, confused, won't talk & will not allow his true emotions to be seen! What has his Father done to him?!! Why is he so withdrawn?!! This movie is GREAT and it is based upon a TRUE STORY!! HEARTBREAKING (to say the LEAST)!!

I knew Seth Adkins would be in a movie with class after reviewing his talent in the movie "Geppetto"! >> BUT WOW!!! His acting ability is far beyond what I expected in this movie!!! His performance is outstanding!! He is short and young looking for his age (acting as a 3 year old at age 7 in the movie "Titanic"), and that is his ONE advantage he has. He's also a good looking little guy (check out "Geppetto"), another advantage, but I had no idea he had SO MUCH TALENT!!!! If you enjoy "Chick Flicks", ya gotta see this!!

"He's an experiment"
SusieSalmonLikeTheFish21 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
When Andrew Came Home is the horrific dramatization of the true story of a little boy, kidnapped by his abusive father and stepmother at the age of five and returned, seemingly mute, to his mom at the age of ten. Andrew doesn't talk at first; he seems terrified of everything around him and he only makes animal-like noises, yet he is surprisingly kind and friendly towards A.J., his mom's baby.

When Andrew is evaluated by a doctor, dentist and mental health team, the results vary but the news isn't good. Both mental health doctors feud over whether or not sending him to a residential treatment facility for mentally disabled kids is the best idea, whereas his mom argues that being at home with his family is best. "He's an experiment," one of the psychiatrists tells the mom, and slowly she begins ignoring their bad advice and doing what she feels is best for her son, which turns out to be exactly what he needs, especially when he finally tells her about the nightmarish and abusive conditions he lived in.

Andrew's story is shocking not only because of the abuse described, but also because it's a true story. The actors were excellent, I just wish the movie hadn't ended so abruptly because it would've been interesting to see if Andrew's progress in learning with his mom continued, and where he is now. I just hope there aren't many other cases like this out there, because who the hell would tie their step-son to a leash and leave him outside in the dark like a pet dog? I've seen dogs treated better than the kid in this movie was and that's just wrong.

Outstanding Emotional Roller Coaster
robert23-14 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Last night I had the pleasure of watching this movie again mainly to enjoy the outstanding performance of Seth Adkins, now a grown man, who played the lead role of ADAM. If for now other reason, watching this movie to relish in his performance is well worth it. The parents, played by Park Overall and Jason Bege(now of Chicago PD fame)were wonderful. Quite an emotional "roller coaster" especially the final scene in the barn which I'm sure, like most of the movie, will bring tears to your eyes. Well directed, written & acted. Congratulations to the producers and casting department. This movie is NOT to be missed & should be shared by families.

Incredible acting from the little boy, some of the best I've ever seen. The story is scary, the horrors little Andrew had to suffer makes this story terrifying. There was good acting all around but incredible acting from the actor who plays Andrew.
