For many reasons, 2017 was an important year to celebrate actresses, and there were many great women in front of the cameras. However, this year’s best performances by men also stood out for pushing against commercial standards and delivering some of the most exciting characters of the year: Men conflicted about their desires, their responsibilities, and their identities as a whole. While a few of these roles may look more traditional than others, none of them are easy, and as a whole they stand out as major accomplishments that either challenge conventional notions of masculinity or scrutinize them with renewed vigor.
Of course, many of the best male performances of 2017 aren’t great because they’re guys; they’re great because they’re memorable performances, period — loaded with intrigue, thrills, and pathos. Here’s the best of the bunch.

When CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles first came calling, New York-bred Renée Felice Smith had just graduated from Nyu’s Tisch School of the Arts with little more on her resume than an Off-Broadway show and a passed-over CW pilot — Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s The Wyoming Project, which she likens to “Little House on the Prairie meets Party of Five” — on her resume.
As such, being courted to join the high-octane NCIS spinoff for Season 2 “was really big, huge,” the actress warmly recalls. “It changed my life.”

Back on television more than 42 years after the debut of the original series, CBS' November 2-premiering S.W.A.T. reboot is exactly the type of testosterone-juiced police procedural the revival-friendly network proliferates throughout its primetime lineup. The message, as relayed by the talent behind several shows recently showcased at the Television Critics Association press tour: It’s simple, and as opposed to “a [number varies]-hour-long movie,” it’s as stand-alone as possible.
Mark Duplass, when describing “Room 104,” the new anthology series he’s producing for HBO, was most explicit about making the show a “casual, daily” experience. “You pop in, you watch one episode, have some sex with that episode. Then you don’t even have to come back for another three episodes,” he said.

It looks like Universal Pictures has found the director they want to helm their remake of Scarface. According to Variety, David Ayer is currently in negotiations with the studio, and you know what? He would be a great choice! This is the kind of film that fits his filmmaking style.
Before Suicide Squad, Ayer wrote and directed films such as Training Day, S.W.A.T., Harsh Times, End of Watch, Sabotage, and Fury. A lot of those films deal with the corrupt world of law enforcement and the gang world.
Rogue One star Diego Luna is attached to star in the movie in the role previously played by Al Pacino. This new film is described as a "reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. The new film will be set in Los Angeles and will focus on a Mexican immigrant."

No “Bull,” CBS wants you to know that the freshman Michael Weatherly series is actually the No. 1 new show of the year in total viewers, over NBC’s lauded “This Is Us.”
“We congratulate them on their success, but we like winning,” CBS senior exec VP Kelly Kahl said. He also pointed out that even CBS’ “Blue Bloods” has a larger audience than any other drama on the other networks, except “This Is Us.”
“The Big Bang Theory” is the “Wayne Gretzky of comedy,” he noted, arguing that no other half-hour comes close in total viewers, which is why they’re big on spinoff entry “Young Sheldon.” The show was recently renewed for two more seasons, a negotiation that Moonves characterized as amicable.
He also said he “hoped” that the show will continue even beyond that. “We’ll do these two years and we’re not going to just lay down,...

Way back in 1979, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” brought us our first genuine female action hero in Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Despite the three sequels that followed, Ripley proved to be something of an outlier. Until fairly recently, a woman could kill someone in a movie only if she faced brutal punishment afterward, as in Scott’s “Thelma and Louise,” or in the inevitable fates of Bond girls: They could dole out lethal action, but rarely survived.
Today, ass-kicking women are no longer an anomaly or subject to automatic retribution. This weekend, we watched Scarlett Johansson lay waste to her enemies (although not the box office) in “Ghost in the Shell,” following a path blazed by the likes of Linda Hamilton (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”), Uma Thurman (“Kill Bill”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). These roles may strike a blow for equality and diversity, but what these women — and...

Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things -- and for the week of April 3 to April 9, this is what we’re most excited about:
Why We're Obsessed With 'Africa's Hunters'
It’s time to get up close and personal with some of Africa’s most iconic predators in this six-part series. In the Zambian wilderness, where lions, leopards and hyenas compete for their next meal, we can expect no mercy from these carnivores. With a revolutionary thermal camera and producers who camped in close proximity, Smithsonian Earth brings us into the secret world of these leaders, highlighting the family dramas as they build allegiances, fight for family, suffer the loss of offspring and search for mates. Although this isn’t a Lion King remake, you can still expect a powerful storyline.
Movies: Donald Glover Cast as Simba in 'Lion King' Remake
Africa’s Hunters airs Fridays on Smithsonian Earth.

Not to be outdone by Netflix’s upcoming string of auteur dramas, Amazon Studios just announced that director Yorgos Lanthimos will be reteaming with The Lobster star Colin Farrell for an upcoming original series. The topic? The Iran-Contra Affair. For those of you (like me) who are too young to remember, the so-called Iran-Contra Affair was a scandal that occurred during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, in which administration officials conspired to sell weapons to Iran (against whom there was an arms embargo) in order to funnel the profits to a right-wing Nicaraguan army known as the Contras (to whom Congress had forbidden funding). The initial plan was to use said profits to negotiate the release of several hostages held by Hezbollah, but then Colonel Oliver North got involved and devised a plan to use the money to also fund the Contras. You may have forgotten, but half a decade ago, producer Neil Moritz (the ‘Fast & Furious‘ franchise, “xXx,” “Stealth,” “S.W.A.T.”) snapped up the rights and plotted a remake of “Starship Troopers,” with fellow producer Toby Jaffe also working on the project. Writers Zack Stentz (“Thor” and “X-Men: First Class”) and Edward Miller were tasked with knocking out a draft of the script, and a couple years ago described their movie as “[l]ess a satire, and more an actual adaptation of the [Robert A.

"So tell me," Colin Farrell asks. "What's it about?"
When The Lobster premiered in Cannes in 2015, the 39-year-old Irish actor was forthright about not understanding what, exactly, was going on in Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos' sci-fi fable, set in a world where single adults who fail to find a suitable romantic partner within 40 days, or risk being turned into animals. A year later, as it opens in New York and Los Angeles today (and goes into wide release on May 27th), he's still not sure — but he has a few ideas.

David Ayer knows cop movies. As the screenwriter of films such as "Training Day," and "S.W.A.T.," and the director of "Street Kings," "Sabotage," and "End Of Watch," the filmmaker knows the milieu of those who wear the badge, and are sometimes corrupted by it, inside and out. And it's a subject he certainly hasn't grown tired of as he's lining up a new movie that will dive into that world again — albeit with a completely wild twist. Will Smith (who stars in Ayer's upcoming "Suicide Squad") and Joel Edgerton will star in "Bright" for the director. Penned by Max Landis ("Chronicle," "American Ultra," "Victor Frankenstein"), the movie will take place in a world where faeries and orcs live with humans, and will center on an orc cop. Uh, okay then. Frankly, I'd rather two talented guys like Smith and Edgerton make a normal cop flick, than one set in a magical world,...

Director David Ayer made his directorial debut with his original screenplay Harsh Times. The gritty drama, starring Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez, which was released in the fall of 2006. Ayer garnered widespread acclaim and accolades for his hyper-realistic portrayal of life behind the blue line in End of Watch (2012). He moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and the experiences of his upbringing shaped much of his artistic vision and his inside knowledge and affection for the culture surrounding law enforcement can be seen throughout his work.
Ayer joined the United States Navy, where he served as sonar man aboard a nuclear attack submarine during the Cold War. After an honorable discharge, Ayer began writing. He wrote and was a co-producer on his “calling card” spec script Training Day, which became a hit film and garnered Denzel Washington an Academy Award for Best Actor.

“It sort of exploded out,” filmmaker David Ayer said about his latest film. “I wrote it for me.” Ayer’s kept largely inside the domain of police films thus far ("S.W.A.T.," "Street Kings," "End Of Watch"), but for his next trick, he’s taking on a WWII drama starring Brad Pitt. And if you think "so what? Pitt’s already done a WWII movie with Quentin Tarantino" (“Inglourious Basterds”), note that Ayer’s “Fury” sounds vastly different. What’s the film like? In a long feature in the New York Times recently, the movie was described as a “relentlessly authentic portrayal of the extremes endured, and inflicted, by Allied troops who entered Germany in the spring of 1945.” Intriguingly, the Times also say the movie “promises to be one of the most daring studio movies in an awards season.” Here’s the official synopsis: April 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theater,...
