NEW DELHI -- STAR announced Friday that it will cease production on the the Indian version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, which has been airing on the network's flagship Hindi entertainment channel STAR Plus since last September. Known here as Kaun Banega Crorepati or KBC2, the series -- now in its second season -- is hosted by Indian film superstar Amitabh Bachchan, who was hospitalized last December and operated for an intestinal infection. Though Bachchan was discharged from hospital almost a month ago, his doctors have advised him a further two months rest which has led to STAR canceling shooting for future episodes. The cancellation is expected to hurt advertising revenues for STAR Plus. Industry estimates indicate that KBC 2 had raked in about Rupees 4 billion rupees ($22 million) so far, with a similar amount expected if the show had run its entire length into the summer.
