The winter of the nymphs
jotix10029 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Adelaida, a beautiful young woman, falls deeply in love with Eusebio, a young man that is clearly beneath her position in society. When he is sent to fight in the Cuban-American was at the end of the 19th century, his beloved awaits impatiently for his return. The announcement of his death, sends Adelaida into a frenzy. She cannot believe he is gone.

The prologue to the film is enough to disorient any viewer. As with other films from Spain, the writing is not their stronger point. As directed by Pedro Telechea, who co-wrote the scenario with Diego Modino, the film is visually pleasant. The story of the doomed lovers does not quite come out realistically. As it is the case with most films from that country, the politics seem to play a big part.

Eduardo Noriega and Elena Anaya are seen as Eusebio and Adelaida. Both are pleasant looking actors. Elvira Minguez appears as Maria, the sister of Adelaida. Veteran performers like Juan Diego and Antonio Resines also are featured in the cast.

Best thing in the film is the gorgeous cinematography by Angel Luis Fernandez who captures in vivid colors the breathtaking views of Northern Spain.

Beautifully filmed loved story
gonz3030 June 2000
THE WINTER OF WOODNYMPHS combine Northern Spanish mythology (the woodnymph legend) with a heated story of forbidden love between the hot Elena Anaya and even hotter Eduardo Noriega. Elvira Minguez is perfect as the meddling sister, adding further obstacles to this love story. Set against the background of Spain's defeat in the Cuban War (a/k/a the Spanish American War), there are several interesting elements thrown into the main plot, which could very well stand on its own. For Noriega and Minguez fans, this movie is a must.
