Jaya Bhaduri was signed as the heroine. Her role was as strong as that of the hero. The movie needed a middle aged actor to play the estranged husband. None of the top heroes of the time who were in that age bracket (Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Dev Anand) would shed their image and act in the movie The newer entrants to middle road cinema (Vijay Arora, Romesh Sharma, Anil Dhawan) were considered too young to depict the maturity required of the role. That is when director Vijay Anand was signed. The only other alternative was Sanjeev Kumar but he was extremely busy with Mausam, Sholay and a host of other movies at the time. The movie was a hit and Vijay Anand followed it up with another heroine-dominated movie Main Tulsi tere aangan ki which also went on to become a hit.
Kora Kagaz, incredibly, almost didn't get made. Just before the film was to go on the floors, the financier backed out. Vijay Ganguly recounted the incident: "Now after 14 years of struggle, he gets his first film and one day before the mahurat, the financier backs out. He [Anil Ganguly] was, like, my life is ruined."Anil went to the financier's house and tried to reason with him. But he did not relent."The whole night [father] was standing down [outside the financier's house] and the financier kept looking that he wasn't going," Vijay continued. Asrani walked out of the film because he found is role too small compared to Deven Verma. Dinesh Hingoo replaced him.

This song had a third antara in the film that was not part of the version in the audio release. Kalyanji - Anandji added the antara based on the suggestion of singer Kishore Kumar who thought that the song should have a stanza with a positive message. He jokingly told the composers that they could either get him to sing the third stanza right then or they'd have to pay him an additional fee if they called him back to sing it. According to Anandji, it was in these circumstances that he himself suggested the lyrics of the third antara. [
