The feminist and workers’ rights crusader Dolores Huerta, who invented the slogan ‘Yes We Can’, is the star of Peter Bratt’s inspiring documentary
This documentary nails its case for legendary status to be instantly conferred on the Mexican-American labour activist and feminist Dolores Huerta – the woman who invented the slogan “Yes We Can”, or, as she coined it, Sí Se Puede. For years, Huerta has been overshadowed by Cesar Chavez, the man with whom she had a testy working relationship as they fought David-and-Goliath battles against big business for the rights of exploited labourers in California.
Using powerful archive material, the film chronicles Huerta’s life and triumphs. Now 87, she is surprisingly gently spoken for someone described as a “hard as nails” negotiator. Film-maker Peter Bratt also sensitively interviews some of her 11 children, who talk with pride and pain about the sacrifices they made as kids while their mother...

President Donald Trump honored the New England Patriots at the White House Wednesday for their historic Super Bowl win, and third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett came armed with an open letter for former president Barack Obama, which he shared along with a photo of himself at the White House.
He began, “Dear Big O, I am writing you this letter to say thank you. I want to thank you for what you have done for this country – outside of politics. Honestly, I don’t know enough about politics to judge what was good or bad, but I want you to know...

A day before leaving office, the outgoing commander in chief penned a heartfelt letter thanking the country for giving him "the honor of serving as your 44th [president]."

Jason from Mnpp here. I probably wouldn't have thought about John Carpenter's 1988 goofy sci-fi classic They Live in relation to politics this year if the film hadn't been dragged kicking and screaming into the conversation by a bunch of Donald Trump's Nazi followers (in my best Carrie Bradshaw voice-over voice: "And so I wondered -- are the terms 'Nazi' and 'Donald Trump Follower' redundant?").
But now that the film has been dragged into the conversation a story about a bunch of elite monsters blinding the populace while they loot the Earth doesn't exactly sound like the world's most far-out science-fiction story these days. So with the Inauguration looming like an orange-haired mushroom cloud before us - and, on a less fatalistic note, with it being John Carpenter's 69th birthday today - let's assume our places.

A Tearful Farewell: President Obama, Daughter Malia (and Even Joe Biden) Weep During Farewell Speech
Many were emotional while witnessing President Barack Obama make his farewell address, including the commander-in-chief himself.
Obama pulled out his handkerchief and wiped his eyes when speaking about his wife of 25 years, First Lady Michelle Obama.
“Michelle – Michelle Lavaughn Robinson, girl of the Southside, for the past 25 years, you’ve been not only my wife and mother of my children, but my best friend,” the president said.
Adding, “You took on a role you didn’t ask for and made it your own with grace and grit and style and good humor. You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody.

After watching “Hidden Figures,” the intertwining tales of a trio of women who bolstered Nasa’s space-race efforts in the early ’60s, it’s hard to imagine the film without the contributions of Octavia Spencer and Pharrell Williams.
Alongside the incredible stories of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), Spencer’s turn as Dorothy Vaughan shines as a beautifully subtle tribute to a self-made woman who defied expectations and limitations.
In “Hidden Figures,” Vaughan anticipates the challenges of an increasingly automated approach to Nasa’s computing efforts and begins to embrace and master the Ibm computer threatening to make the work of her department obsolete. Spencer sees a greater message in Vaughan’s expansion into then-emerging areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.

This fall, Joss Whedon spent $508,374 of his own money to keep Donald Trump from becoming President of the United States.
At least, that’s how much money Whedon put into his political action committee Save the Day, per public Fec filings compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan research group that publishes financial information on PACs and super PACs. According to reports, the brand new super Pac, founded a few months ago, had exactly one donor over the last three months:

Midway through its eleventh season, there are certain things we’ve come to expect from The Voice.
Carson Daly will spoil any “Steal” at least 14 minutes before it happens. Adam and Blake will engage in some insults that resemble my morning coffee — light and sweet — before eventually hugging it out. And a four-chair turn will always crush a one-chair turn in the Battle Rounds.
Related2017 Renewal Scorecard: What’s Coming Back? What’s Getting Cancelled? What’s on the Bubble?
Oh But Slow Your Roll, Mr. Daly! Newbie coach Alicia Keys apparently never got the memo about that last Voice cliché.

President Obama passed the Democrats' torch to his former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday night - but not before nostalgically savoring how it all began for him eight years ago. Headlining the third night of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Obama strode onto the podium to "City of Blinding Lights," the same song that played when he took the stage at his first nominating convention in 2008. Now, like then, the crowd greeted him with his signature slogan from that first campaign: "Yes we can!" Obama opened with reflections on his two terms in the White House, saying the highlights,...

Although Bayton says he’s inspired by the Art Nouveau movement as well as designers like Therry Muggler and John Paul Gaultier, Bayton says his true muse is nature. When Amy Poehler says that "Parks and Recreation" "kind of ruined me for anything else," it's not hard to understand why. For seven seasons, she was the star, producer and emotional tone-setter (on screen and off) for one of TV's best comedies, in a job that allowed her to do ridiculous things but also play big dramatic moments, that let her work with a wonderful ensemble, that gave her opportunities to write, and direct and constantly exercise her muscles as a master improv comic. One day, Poehler may be able to find another character as rich and tailored to her skill-set as Leslie Knope, but to do that in a project with all the other benefits of this one seems like it would require an astonishing amount of luck. The series finale airs Tuesday night at 10 on NBC. Early last week, Poehler and I spoke about the show's bumpy origin story,...

There are plenty of format changes -- or tweaks, rather -- in store for Season 13 of "American Idol," but there's something else that's getting an overhaul: The music. According to the show's new producers, the list of "Idol" songs and themes will be expanded dramatically in the upcoming season.

The article below contains spoilers for "Yes We Can Can," the December 1st, 2013 episode of "Treme." David Simon and Eric Overmyer's New Orleans drama "Treme" returned to air last night with a lilt in its step and no particular sense of urgency, despite having only five episodes to close out its sprawling narrative about a city in recovery after a devastating natural disaster and the many manmade problems that followed. Urgency has never suited "Treme," which has moseyed, music numbers and all, into its abbreviated fourth and final season without worrying about cliffhangers or carefully wrought plot twists -- when characters have died, gotten together or broken up, it has never been with the thrum of "you won't believe what happens next!" but with an immediacy that defied calculation. When Annie (Lucia Micarelli) walked out on Davis (Steve Zahn) in "Tipitina," for instance, it didn't seem like the end...

X Factor returns this weekend and it's gearing up to take over your lives until Christmas. And even if you're the sort of person who would normally rather eat a plate of dog food than spend Saturday night with Louis Walsh, there are at least a couple of reasons to be excited about the show's 10th series.
1. Loveable oddballs.
Without X Factor we would never have seen Jedward performing the talking bit in 'Oops I Did It Again', watched Kitty Brucknell in a glow-in-the-dark catsuit, witnessed the horror of Diva Fever or, most importantly, been treated to the genius of Wagner.
From 'Loaf Shack' to bongo-drum bashing, from backing dancers rubbing their boobs to owning a pet lion, Wagner remains the greatest ever X Factor oddball in our eyes, but hopefully this year, he can be topped.
And don't even get us started on the greatest act to never reach the live shows.

New York, Jun 20: Younger American teens are starting to map their careers at 13 and sometimes opt for baking over texting, a new study has found.
The study by MTV said that the teens from 13-17 age groups dubbed "young" Millennials have absorbed advice from their Gen X parents, the New York Daily News reported.
MTV said in a statement that today's twenty-somethings - more akin to the magical wizard Harry Potter - represent the Millennials that came of age in the economic boom of the 90s/early 2000s, a time of 'Yes We Can' and the belief that working hard and playing hard could result in success in future.
The study involved 1,800 Us teens ages 14-17, 700 "older Millennials" aged 18-25, 300 Gen Xers, and 300 Boomers.

Cool, right? And here’s a nice tidbit for all you readers of the book: according to BleedingCool, showrunner Bryan K. Vaughan (Lost) said during the WonderCon panel that if they’re given more than one season, he’ll be taking the show in a different direction than the ending of the book. Of course here we have the potential downside. We’re not getting an end to the story any time soon. While this is fine in regular dramas,...

Having just suffered a heart attack, Rosie O’Donnell wasn't taking any chances on election night, opting not to watch the results come in.
“I am watching world poker –- can't stand the stress of the election,” Rosie told The Huffington Post last night just before the result started to come in. ”Lemme know when it's over and O has won.”
It's perhaps no surprise O'Donnell stayed away from politics all night, having recently told HuffPost, “Mitt Romney -– don't vote for him. I had a heart attack.”
“I have moved on to 'Storage Wars,'” O'Donnel later said.
Finally after it was clear that President Barack Obama would be reelected, Rosie tweeted, “Yes We Can - Yes We Did - On We Grow !!!!! #Obamausa”...

It was a marketer's dream: two slogans that adorned pop art and t-shirts, and were screamed in stadiums nationwide. Barack Obama's twin campaign themes of "Hope" and "Yes We Can" helped send him to the White House. Now four years later, he needs just as catchy a set of slogans if he wants to stay in Washington.
